2 Surge Protection Devices Today s modern electronic systems, such as those designed for process control and high-speed communication, rely heavily on very sensitive, high performance electronic components. These components are very vulnerable to damage and disruption caused by induced current surges and transient voltages. Sources of these surges and transients include natural phenomena (lightning, static discharges) and random man made events (power switching, spikes, welding current faults). Surge protection devices are designed to divert the resulting surges safely to earth and limit voltages to acceptable levels - protecting the electronic components and the system itself. Although protecting buildings against the effects of lightning strikes is quite common, protecting electrical and electronic devices may often be overlooked. The resulting surges and transients conducted by signal, communication and mains power cables have a significant impact, causing production downtime, corruption or loss of data and high repair or replacement costs of damaged equipment. 3 Surges & Transients Surges and transients are bursts of current and voltage that are well in excess of normal levels and are likely to disrupt or permanently damage sensitive electronic components and systems. Since the sources are lightning, static discharges, power switching, spikes or welding current faults, they can be any shape and size. Standard waveforms have been developed over many years that designers and testing authorities use to evaluate the performance of protection units and simplify their specification. As an example, lightning induced surge waveforms are simulated using equipment with a short-circuit current output of typically 5 or 10kA giving 8/20 microsecond (µs) pulses (i.e. rising to peak value in 8µS and decaying to half that value in 20µS, as shown in figure 1). Power switching transients are often simulated by open-circuit impulses of 10kV with 1.2/50µS waveforms (see figure 2). Other waveforms are also used for particular applications or by individual specifying authorities. Protection Components No single surge protection component can combine all the necessary features to prevent excess energy from reaching sensitive parts of electronic equipment. For this reason, multi-component networks or hybrid circuits, incorporating the best features of several surge protection components (as shown in figure 3), are used in MTL Surge Technologies products. A maintenance-free and self-resetting network is normally preferred to avoid interruption of service. In addition, instrumentation and other DC and low level AC applications need very precise voltage regulation without significant leakage current that can affect measurement accuracy. For these reasons, MTL Surge Technologies data and signal line protection units incorporate gas-filled discharge tubes for high surge current diversion combined with zener diodes for fast operation (reacting within microseconds) and precise voltage clamping with minimum leakage. AC and DC mains power protectors that use voltage dependent resistors or varistors as their high power absorption capability have a distinct advantage. Since the load circuits need to be protected from the effects of varistor failure caused by overloads or successive impulses, the protection circuits are normally duplicated and monitored in power line protectors. 5 Data & Signal Protection Induced surges and transient voltages can destroy or, perhaps more worryingly, render inaccurate sensitive control and measurement instruments. Control systems, sensors and telecommunications equipment may be subjected to a barrage of interference and surges of energy, therefore to disregard the need for simple, effective and reliable surge protection is to compromise the safety of the plant. High bandwidth, low resistance, RTD, PSTN and 3-wire transmitter versions are available covering all process related signals including 4-20mA loops, RTDs, THCs, telemetry outstations, shut down systems and fire and gas detectors. BASEEFA approved versions are also available for hazardous are application. TP48 surge protection devices safeguard field-mounted process transmitters where it matters, right at the unit. After simple installation (the TP48 screws into an unused conduit entry) it provides high-level protection against surges and resets itself automatically after each operation. The TP48 is available with screw threads to suit different transmitters, with explosion proof and intrinsically safe options for hazardous areas. Working voltage is 48V DC maximum with impulse ratings of 10kA peak current and 10kV peak voltage. Telecom Protection ZoneBarrier modular data and signal protection devices provide a uniquely customer configurable port-by-port protection approach. ZoneBarrier modules can be utilised as either stand-alone devices or as building blocks to create an unlimited multi-port protection system. Modules are available for data and signal applications including units suitable for 4-20mA loops. ZoneBarrier data and signal devices have terminal strip connectors and can be wall mounted, DIN rail mounted or mounted on any flat surface in a 19 rack. Highly-integrated, small-signal telecommunications equipment is becoming increasingly sensitive to damage and disruption from voltage surges and spikes. It makes sound sense to protect expensive telephone installations from damage and commercially damaging downtime by fitting effective and unobtrusive protection wherever surges could enter the system. Where RFI filtering is required in addition to surge protection the DP200/BT/RFI and DP200/RJ/RFI can be supplied. Earthing is via a hardwired connection to the MDF terminal, eliminating the need to use unreliable slide on tab connections to the frame. 6 Mains Power Protection Surges and spikes from nearby lightning strikes, arc-welders and high voltage cables can destroy or disrupt unprotected electronic equipment. These destructive forces enter mains power circuits within buildings by a variety of methods. The primary route is where power, often dirty and spike-laden, actually enters the building and it is at this point that surges should be stopped in order to prevent them from propagating further. However, surges and RFI can also corrupt mains power supplies from within the building. By providing protection at the main power distribution board and then at each piece of equipment, mains borne surges and spikes are eliminated before they can cause damage. Mains power protection is fundamental - MTL Surge Technologies supplies that protection. ZoneDefender has a maximum surge current capacity per phase of 70kA and is suitable for AC or DC application. Status indication is supplied, as standard, allowing each varistor network to be continually monitored and indicated by LEDs on the front panel of the device. Remote monitoring is enabled by the remote indication contacts of these wall or flush mounting devices. These pluggable devices come in two parts consisting of a base element and plugin protection module. Optional features available for this range are dual networking, ensuring continuity of protection, and status monitoring for up to 15 units via a separate monitoring block. Alternatively, each module can be individually monitored remotely via volt-free contacts. An optional IP65 rated weatherproof enclosure is available for this range should it be necessary. MA100 range devices meet the requirements of BS 6651:1999, Surge Category C.
