The Institute was established at the onset of independence in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India. It was founded in 1949 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) with headquarters in Calcutta and a branch at Bombay, under Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). It was renamed as Marine Engineering and Research Institute in It started with an initial intake of 60 cadets and today about 286 young and highly motivated Marine Officers are passing through her hallowed portals. 67 years since its inception, MERI is regarded as an acclaimed Institute around the world for Maritime education. Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus is offering two leading maritime courses, 4 years B Tech in Marine Engineering, and 2 years MBA in International Transportation and Logistics Management. Besides, IMU, Kolkata Campus also conducts various STCW courses for its own cadets and MEO Class-I Preparatory Course. Ex-cadets of this institute are well established not only in shipping but also in many other areas of administrative services, management, entrepreneurship etc. IMU, Kolkata Campus (erstwhile MERI ) caters to the industry by providing regimented residential training to candidates which includes various extracurricular activities, indoor and outdoor games, aquatics and cultural activities. Cadets from this institute regularly take part in various inter -collegiate competitions involving cultural and sports activities and win many prizes. It has the latest state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities for maritime education and training. Its 33 acres campus has sq mtrs of built-up area. Besides various class rooms, well equipped laboratories, library with more than books and technical journals, separate hostels for boys and girls, the institute has a fully equipped, Olympic-size swimming pool cum life-saving training facility, one 1000 seater auditorium, a 8-bed infirmary

2 with 24X7 medical assistance, a gymnasium with multigym facility, workshop and a Ship in Campus with one full-size, 6000BHP marine propulsion Engine. This campus offers the Undergraduate Programme in Marine Engineering that serves as a platform of quality training for incumbents who aspire for a career in Marine Engineering. Programmes Offered (Residential) : Lateral entry into 2 nd year of 4 years B.Tech (Marine Engineering) Programme. Guidelines for admission by Lateral Entry into Second Year of B.Tech (Marine Engineering) Programme: Eligibility Criteria: (i) The Candidates should have Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or) Diploma in Marine Engineering from Institution approved by AICTE with at least 60% marks (**) overall and should have completed the Diploma within the stipulated period of 3 years, (ii)the Candidates should have secured 50% marks in English in 10 th Standard or in 12 th Standard, (iii) Age Limit years as on 1 st Aug 2016 ( 5 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates). ** In case of SC/ST candidates there will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks; however it will not apply to English marks. Mode of selection : Admission will be done on first come first serve basis, subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Reservation will be followed as per rule. 5 * Total Fees include Tuition Fee(inclusive of Library Fee, Workshop Fee, Industrial Visit Fee, Extra-curricular activities Fee, Medical Fee etc.), mess charges, lodging charges, laundry charges, hair-cut charges, cost of uniform, cost of books, Indian National Database of Seafarers (INDOS), Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC)and so on. * No fee will be refunded once admission is confirmed. Examination Fees as prescribed by the University are to be paid separately. Each candidate will have to deposit an amount of Rs.20,000/- as Caution Money (Refundable) apart from the fee mentioned above. Expenses for on board Training Assessment Record (TAR) Book and External Training, if any will be charged extra as and when required from the cadets joining B. Tech Marine Engineering programmes. Mode of Payment : 1) Demand Draft for Admission/Registration Fee of Rs. 10,000/- should be drawn in favour of Indian Maritime University - Kolkata Campus, Payable at Kolkata. The above fee to be deposited on the day of Walk-in-Interview. 2) Demand Draft for Programme Fees of Rs.25000/- should be drawn in favour of Indian Maritime University payable at Kolkata. The above fee to be deposited prior confirmation of Admission. 3) Demand Draft for 3 rd Semester fee of Rs.1,00,000/- for male candidates and Rs. 60,000/- for female candidates should be drawn in favour of Indian Maritime University - Kolkata Campus, Payable at Kolkata. The above fee to be deposited at the time of admission. 4) Demand Draft for Caution Money (Refundable) of Rs. 20,000/-should be drawn in favour of Indian Maritime University - Kolkata Campus, Payable at Kolkata. The above fee to be deposited at the time of admission. All applicants for lateral entry into B.Tech (Marine Engineering) programme need to clear their physical fitness test which is essential for admission as per DG Shipping Guidelines. The prospective candidates after selection are required to produce a medical fitness certificate in the prescribed format issued by any Medical Officer approved by Directorate General of Shipping.

6 Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply for lateral entry into B.Tech (Marine Engineering) programme. Interested Candidates may appear with application duly filled in prescribed attached format for walk- in-interview on and between a.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus, P-19, Taratala Road, Kolkata along with all original documents and four Passport size photographs.
