1 GEN-4 SCADA SNC-Lavalin Energy Control Systems GEN-4 Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA), with its open and distributed architecture, provides a high-end, high availability system while offering superior performance and advanced graphics capabilities. Previously only available on expensive multi-server-based SCADA Systems, recent advances in the computer hardware industry now allow ECS to offer this same level of functionality and performance on a single or redundant pair of servers. Operation workstations can be delivered on UNIX or Windows NT. Our GEN-4 SCADA s redundant node configuration offers the high performance and advanced functionality required by both small and large utilities and does so at a competitive price. The system is scaleable; it can be easily expanded to a fully-distributed EMS or DMS System by the simple addition of modular nodes and applications. It can be sized to fit the requirements of any utility and is supported by standard product releases, maintenance upgrades, and service contracts. Our GEN-4 SCADA provides advanced SCADA functionality and proven performance and reliability. It runs an Oracle RDBMS. The data collected and processed by the SCADA System is easily accessed by corporate applications, such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access, using standard ODBC access. 2 GEN-4 SCADA - ARCHITECTURE ECS uses an open, distributed client/server architecture designed to fully exploit internationally recognized standards in all areas of interconnectivity. The use of appropriate third-party hardware and software has been maximized in order to provide the most convenient means of system expansion and integration with corporate and legacy systems. In the distributed configuration, functions are allocated to processing units based on the function/data modularity principle that locates related groups of functions as closely as possible to the data they access frequently. The main intent of this function allocation strategy is to avoid introducing communication bottlenecks in the process of distributing functionality. The ECS architecture also provides a simple but extremely powerful selective redundancy scheme, in which high availability of critical data and functions is achieved primarily through computer vendor technology. Consequently, fast failovers give rise to an enhanced availability of critical functions without the need for additional proprietary redundancy-related software an essential property of an open mission-critical system. GEN-4 SCADA - THE APPLICATIONS Application Launcher Quick and easy access to all ECS applications is provided through the Application Launcher. Select the appropriate Application Launcher menu option, toolbar icon, or pushbutton, and the main window of the desired application instantly appears on the workstation monitor. The Application Launcher also provides system monitoring flashing icons that change colour alert a dispatcher to changes in the system.

4 Active Alarm Browser The Active Alarm Browser provides a scrollable alarm list that gives information about network conditions in real-time, reflecting unfavourable, disruptive, or hazardous conditions noted on devices, points, or virtual points. The Active Alarm Browser window allows sophisticated filtering of results. A dispatcher may elect to view alarms and events by area of jurisdiction, type of alarm, type of event, type of tag, status of alarm, and priority of alarm. Trending The Trend application allows for the monitoring of real-time telemetered, non-telemetered, or calculated points, and/or historical data over a selected period of time. In a trend display, realtime values are updated dynamically as a point is scanned; historical data is displayed immediately with new values added as they become available. While points are usually trended ondemand, they may also be assigned for trend data collection. Graphical Database Browser The Graphical Database Browser (GDB) is one of the main SCADA applications. It allows the dispatcher to view and interact with the graphical displays one-line diagrams, geographic maps, and tabular displays as they are updated with real-time or study mode data. Dynamic symbols on the displays allow dispatchers to obtain upto-date information about any piece of equipment on the network, as well as issue device controls or directives remotely.

5 Report Scheduler The Report Scheduler allows a dispatcher to create schedules for system reports. Schedules, based on predefined templates, may be created new or from existing schedules. Reports may be either instantaneous or periodic. Results may be printed, faxed, ed, or archived. Historical Alarm Browser The Historical Alarm and Event Browser allows for the review and analysis of alarms and events stored in the historical alarm database. It has the same scrollable format as the Active Alarm Browser. Since the Historical database is administered by the system RDBMS, the display is querybased and allows viewing of alarms and events based on a number of filtering criteria: time range, area of jurisdiction, device type, priorities, application lists, station name, and search strings. Historical Subsystem Any analog or status points may be assigned to historical data collection. Historical data for a point, including its quantity, is collected and stored in the RDBMS. Conventional historical data collection types such as instantaneous, average, accumulated, maximum, minimum, and calculated data is fully supported. Aggregated data can be kept on-line for up to 10 years. Access to historical data is accomplished using standard SQL. As such, historical data can be viewed on custom-built web pages and formatted with any commercial report package. Historical data can be viewed in trend or tabular format using standard SCADA tools. Study Mode Study Mode provides a simulation environment for the execution of "whatif" scenarios, allowing a dispatcher to evaluate the impact of modifications to the system before they are implemented. Saved incidents snapshots of the database can be replayed in a study session in order to analyze and better understand the incident. The applications that are available in study mode are completely independent of the real-time network. GEN-4 SCADA - EDITORS Integrated Database Editor The Integrated Database Editor (IDBE) allows for on-line maintenance of the real-time database. It comprises a set of graphical tools, reports, and editors that allow the review and editing of objects stored in the ECS relational database and in some memory-resident application databases. Various types of graphical editors are made available for the creation, modification, or deletion of these database objects. SCADA Command Language SCADA Command Language (SCL), a high level language, allows the user to prepare scripts that can be used to perform control sequences automatically. These sequences can be tested in study mode (step by step or free running). Sequences can be stored in a library and executed on operator request, on the occurrence of an event, or at the request of another application. Database Edit Manager The Database Edit Manager (DEM) is a configuration management tool used for change orders that are to be applied to a database. A change order comprises a set of database changes that must be activated at the same time. Map Conversion Processor The Map Conversion Processor (MCP) allows for the conversion of DXF- and SIF-format files to Tiled/Layered Graphic (TLG) files. TLG is the required format for any file that is displayed in the GDB.

6 Alarm Definition Editor The Alarm Definition Editor (ADE) allows you to define the behaviour and attributes of a class of alarms and events. The definition of a class may be changed on-line at any time. Changes will affect the presentation of alarms and events at run-time. Area of Jurisdiction The Area of Jurisdiction Editor (AoJ) allows you to manage areas of jurisdiction for consoles and loggers on the system. It is available on any console, however, only one instance of the AoJ Editor may be active across the system at any one time. Use of the AoJ Editor is usually restricted to the Supervisor. GEN-4 SCADA - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Documentation The ECS Documentation Package is an integral part of ECS s offering and compliments all aspects of the ECS System design, development, implementation, testing, final end-user operation, maintenance, and management. All user documentation is available on-line; all documentation is supplied on CD-ROM or in hardcopy format. Training ECS has a proven Training Package designed to provide the customer with the knowledge and ability to operate, maintain, and support the ECS systems. This process involves a close interaction between instructional developers, logistic support analysts, and subject matter experts.
