7 Our family Our family consists of seven members altogether: father and mother, three boys (sons) and two girls (daughters). My brother Sam is the eldest of us boys: he is exactly eight years older than I. My sister Nora is two years younger than my brother Sam, and six years older than I. My younger brother Robert is twelve years old and my younger sister Ann is only seven. My father and mother, who are husband and wife, celebrated their silver wedding (the twenty-fifth anniversary of their marriage) a few weeks ago. My full name is Henry John Smith. Smith is my surname (family name): Henry John are my Christian names, the names I received at baptism (christening). At home I am generally called Harry. I am nearly fourteen years of age. Next Friday is my

My elder brother Sam is an engineer and spends most of his time working for a big firm in Birmingham. He comes home for week-ends. We are all looking forward to the marriage ceremony, which will take place next Easter at our parish church. Mr. Brown, the bridegroom, will wear a black suit. The bride, my sister Nora, will be dressed in white silk. My seven-year-old sister Ann will be one of the bridesmaids, together with her cousin Fiona, who is of about the same age. They also will be dressed in white. We are already beginning to make preparations for the wedding breakfast, the festive meal at which all the wedding-guests are joyfully received. Arrangements have been made in regard to the wedding-cake, which will be eaten at this meal as a dessert. This cake will be large. It will be nearly two feet in height. All those present at the ceremony, as well as all relations and friends, will receive a piece of this cake. After the wedding breakfast and the speeches, which, I hope, will not be too long, the happy newly

9 9 married couple will hasten away on their honeymoon, which they will spend in beautiful Devonshire. There will be many guests present at the meal, for, besides my own family, there will be many relatives, my old grandfather, my uncles, aunts, and cousins. My favourite uncle is Uncle Jeremy, who, strange to say, has never got married. He has remained single, he is an old bachelor. But he is very fond of us children, his nephews and nieces. All my aunts, of whom I have four, have got married. Not one of them has remained an old maid. But Aunt Sarah has been for many years a widow: her husband died in India, where he held a government post. Until a short time ago I had two grand-fathers. One of them died and was buried last year. His body was laid to rest with his ancestors in the church yard not far from our home. My other grandfather, although he is over seventy years of age, is still very active.
