Course Information Teacher Education Program Conceptual Framework Southern Illinois University-Carbondale s Teacher Education Program (TEP) considers teaching to be a reflective practice, one intended to prepare thoughtful, reflective professionals who are competent in their subject matter and in pedagogy. Pedagogy is the art and science of teaching; it is both a skill set and a well-informed theoretical understanding of how teaching theories inform teaching practices within the classroom and within school cultures. Southern Illinois University s conceptual framework for the TEP program views teaching as a profession characterized by thoughtful analysis of interactions with and presentation of subject matter to students, followed by informed reflection on these interactions and presentations. Teachers should make decisions based on their competence in both subject matter and pedagogy, rather than acting as technicians following a predetermined curriculum. In this light, teaching is a process of career-long learning and refinement towards the goals of teaching excellence and subject mastery. Course Description This course provides an introduction to teaching as a profession in the American education system. It offers a variety of perspectives on education including historical, philosophical, social, legal, and ethical issues in a diverse society and amid complex organizational structures and school governance frameworks. This course will be comprised of two credit hours of classroom discussion and lecture time, as well as one credit hour of weekly computer lab instruction. The lab section is designed to introduce LiveText, the TEP s online portfolio system, while also providing the necessary computer technology skills required for teaching skillfully within our current school systems. Registration for lab sections will occur the first and second weeks of class. Successful completion of this course is required for admission to the Teacher Education Program. A clinical component of 15 observation hours is required to be completed through live and/or video observations. Please arrange for these observation sites early! 1

2 Course Objectives 1. The EDUC 210 student understands how students learning is influenced by individual experiences, talents, and prior learning as well as by language, culture, family and community values. 2. The EDUC 210 student understands personal cultural perspectives and biases and their effect on one s teaching. 3. The EDUC 210 student understands how to use various technological tools to access and manage information. 4. The EDUC 210 student understands how cultural and gender differences can affect communication in the classroom. 5. The EDUC 210 student understands the social, intellectual, and political implications of language use and how they influence meaning. 6. The EDUC 210 student understands schools as organizations within the larger community context. 7. The EDUC 210 student understands that reflection is an integral part of professional growth and improvement of instruction. 8. The EDUC 210 student understands methods of inquiry that provide for a variety of selfassessment and problem solving strategies for reflecting on practice. 9. The EDUC 210 student understands the unique characteristics of education as a profession with a professional code of conduct as defined by the Illinois School Code. 10. The EDUC 210 student understands how school systems are organized and operate. 11. The EDUC 210 student understands school policies and procedures. 12. The EDUC 210 student understands the importance of active participation and leadership in professional education organizations. 13. The EDUC 210 student is familiar with the rights of students with disabilities. Course Materials Powell, S. D. (2012). An Introduction to Education: Choosing Your Teaching Path, 2 nd Edition. New Jersey: Pearson. LiveText Package (This will be provided in EDUC 210 Technology Labs) LiveText Package Code will be provided in the Educ 210 Lab sections by SIUC Staff. LiveText will provide continuous access to the program throughout a student s time in the SIU Teacher Education Program and one year after graduation (5 years total). LiveText is non-transferable; students may not share or use another student s LiveText. 2

3 Students in this course may need to have the following software downloaded to their computers in order to view course video material. Please get help in your lab section if you are missing these. Quicktime RealPlayer Acrobat Reader A technology fee is included in the Fee Schedule for EDUC 210. The purpose of this fee is to meet the growing technological needs of the students. The technology fee will NOT be refunded if student already has an active LiveText account and/or drops the class after having registered for a LiveText account. Clinical Component As part of the requirements for EDUC 210 Introduction to Education, students MUST complete 15 hours of observation. The criteria for successfully fulfilling this time block will be discussed later in the semester. The majority or all of the observations may be completed using the 360 video on-line viewing available through LiveText. Attendance Policy Professional responsibility begins by learning to be punctual and prepared. Students are expected to attend ALL class meetings. Should circumstances occur which are beyond the individual s control, he or she should discuss this promptly with the instructor before the absence occurs. More than two absences, regardless of reasons, may result in lowering of the final grade by one letter grade and an additional letter grade for each absence beyond the third. Weekly assignments are due during the scheduled week regardless of absence. Class Etiquette Shut off and put away cell phones for the duration of the class. Please do not chew gum or eat in class. Students who cannot be at a class are responsible for all missed work and missed notes. Please be courteous during class discussions even if topics are controversial. Any unnecessary disturbances created in class will be reason to have students dismissed. Assignments As university students and potential teacher education candidates, class members are expected to complete weekly reading assignments when scheduled. Reading quizzes and/or questions will be given for each reading assignment. Reading is required and preparation for class discussion is part of your attendance grade. In addition to the reading assignments, students will complete assignments that complement the text chapters and the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards (IL-PTS). Categories include reflective essays, 3

4 class presentations, video/movie summaries/analyses, various interviews, website reviews, quizzes, work samples of various types and other assessments. Assignments will be aligned with an Illinois Professional Teaching Standard as required and will be placed in the student s Initial Portfolio under the identified Teaching Standard. Students will then complete a two-part reflection for each assignment, as the Portfolio directions require. Assignment Logistics 1. ALL written assignments will be submitted via LiveText and should use traditional font (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.) in a size that allows for ease in on-line grading. Professional appearance, correct grammar and spelling are important. The best method is to prepare work in Word format and copy/paste into LiveText document. 2. Written work will be graded with respect to (1) accuracy, (2) quantity/quality of factual information and use of course content, (3) balanced and reasoned points of view, (4) organization, and (5) use of supporting evidence. Most assignments have an accessible rubric to use as a guide for preparing assigned work. 3. Numerous and/or consistent errors in grammar and usage will result in a failing grade for an assignment at the instructor s discretion. Therefore, proofread carefully. Do not depend solely on the computer s grammar/spelling check tool(s). Once these are used, proofread again. Remember that good writing is re-writing. 4. LiveText tracks submission dates. Submit work on time. A -5 point deduction will be taken from all Resubmission documents. Assignment resubmissions/revisions will be due the following class period. Any late assignment submissions will NOT be accepted after due date and will be given a zero. Initial Portfolio and Reflective Essay EDUC 210 students will develop an initial Portfolio in preparation for entry into the Teacher Education Program (TEP). The Portfolio includes (1) personal information, (2) the IL-PTS and their related artifacts and reflections, (3) an observation section and (4) a final reflective essay. The Portfolio must be completed prior to the end of the course. Note: Production of the Portfolio is a prerequisite for a student to be considered for acceptance into the Teacher Education Program (TEP) and is a requirement for receiving a passing grade in the EDUC 210 class. The sooner you are comfortable using and utilizing the tools of LiveText for creating your electronic portfolio, the better off you will be in this class. Many minor deductions occur when students to not follow directions closely and/or fail to attend LiveText Lab sessions on a weekly basis. 4

Grade Percent Points A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 59% and Below 599 and Below Incompletes are NOT given for this class. Stay on task! Basic Skills Test maybe taken before mid-term to eliminate mid-term test. Details will be discussed by instructor at the beginning of semester. 5

6 EDUC Technology Lab for ALL EDUC 210 Students Ms. Sherrie Beltran will be the EDUC 210 Technology Instructor and support for LiveText. She will be demonstrating LiveText procedures for proper completion of EDUC 210 weekly assignments and portfolio completion throughout the semester. The EDUC 210 Technology Lab is a required component of the EDUC 210 class. There will be Lab assignments and points awarded for their completion each week. Ms. Beltran is will be available for one-on-one student help sessions outside of class as needed. If extra assistance is needed, please contact Ms. Beltran early in the semester so that you do not fall behind in the class. Know how to respond to each type of emergency. Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency.
