9 I3. Add: Installation Specifications at EXHIBIT A. Plant material must be watered in on install using a hose or water truck. Please see below. EXHIBIT A INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS To ensure vigorous growth, and a minimum of maintenance problems, the following minimum standards are to be observed: a. Selected plant material shall have a habit of growth that is normal for the species and shall be healthy, vigorous, and meet or exceed the measurements specified as the minimum acceptable sizes. All plants shall be Florida No. 1 or better as outlined under Grades & Standards for Nursery Plants, State Plant Board of Florida. The Villages Districts reserve the right to reject any plants that do not meet these specifications. b. The handling and planting of all landscaping shall conform to standard and accepted nursery practices, with regard to bed preparation, the addition of soil amendments, fertilizer requirements, proper planting techniques, watering in, mulching, and staking. See following plant installation details. c. Proper protection to lawn and adjoining areas shall be provided and any damage resulting from planting operations shall be repaired promptly. In the event of the threat of damage resulting from insects or disease, the plants shall be treated by preventative or remedial measures following sound horticultural practices. d. All newly planted areas and/or single plants or trees are to be mulched to a depth of 3 with pine straw after planting is completed. Setting Plants: All plants shall be centered in the planting holes and set upon at least 4 inches of compacted planting soil to such a depth that the top of the rootball is 1 to 2 inches above finished grade so that finished grade level at which the plant rests after settlement and mulching will be the same at which the plant was grown. Container-grown plants shall be carefully removed from the container so as to avoid damage to the root system. Tree Installation: For multi-trunk trees, trees less than 3 caliper, or container trees up to 30 gallon there shall be a minimum of two pressure treated lodge poles with a minimum of two feet of the stake driven into the ground, and attached to the tree with approved ties or doubled #12 galvanized guy wires with rubber hose to protect the trunk. Tree Installation: For trees 3-4 caliper, 45 to 100 gallon trees, or B&B trees up to 40 diameter root ball, the Terra Toggle Rootball Tree Staking System by Accuplastics Inc. is to be used as specified with two pressure treated 2 x 4 s or 2 x 6 s per their specifications (352) with the 500 pound rated black anchors. (Known as Terra Toggle earth anchor.) Larger trees will require the use of four pressure treated 2 x 6 s per Accuplastics recommended specifications. Contractor shall ensure rootball has sufficient strength to withstand rootball anchoring. Anchor is to be installed at a 3 to 5 foot depth into undisturbed soil with strap at a 45 degree angle away from tree. PINE STRAW BEDDING Pine straw shall be fluffed and or added to as necessary to enhance moisture holding capability and a neat, clean appearance. Care should be taken during installing so as to not cover landscape lighting, valves, junction boxes or other structures and components. Page 9 of 11
10 PRODUCT DELIVERY / NON-PERFORMANCE Inspection and acceptance of product and workmanship shall be accomplished by the District s designated personnel. Contractor will be responsible for the safe unloading of all material onto the District s site. Time is of the essence in any contract entered into by the District and failure to deliver within the time period shall be considered a default. In case of default, the District may procure the work and materials from other sources and hold the Bidder responsible for any excess costs occasioned thereby and may immediately cancel any contract entered into that result from this request. WARRANTY The Contractor offers the following warranties on installed plant materials: Trees One (1) Year Warranty Shrubs Ninety (90) Day Warranty Turf Sixty (60) Day Warranty Contractor warrants that any failure of materials or service within the above referenced time frames after acceptance by the District, which can be traced to materials or labor supplied during the performance of the work, shall be repaired and/or replaced without any additional charge to the District. Warranty shall cover all materials and labor associated with warranty repairs performed on site. IRRIGATION REPAIRS Repairs or replacement of irrigation components shall be accomplished as soon as possible to minimize any adverse effect to turf and or plant material. I4. The following specifications for fertilizer are hereby incorporated in the planting specifications: All fertilizer for shrubs, specimens, trees, and palms shall be Agriform tablets, or approved equal, applied according to the manufacturer s instructions. Plants shall be fertilized with Agriform tablets applied according to the manufacturer s instructions. Fertilizer for sod areas shall be pelletized organic with minor elements, applied prior to sodding at the rate of 16lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. Proof of purchase, delivery, and/or use on the job of all fertilizers shall be provided to the Landscape Manager via invoices, delivery slips, bill of lading, or any other such documents satisfactory to the Landscape Manager. I5. The following specifications for backfill are hereby incorporated in the planting specifications: Backfill used for all plantings except annual beds shall consist of two parts of existing soil amended with one part of domestic peat or planting mix, or with one part of sandy fill in heavy soils; (excessively heavy soils, if encountered by the Contractor, shall be reported promptly to the Landscape Manager. I6 The following specifications are to be used if it has been determined by the Contractor and Landscape Manager that an area or a shrub bed must be demo d/tilled before planting new material. These specifications are hereby incorporated into the planting specifications: Beds for plant material or smaller shall be amended first by rototilling the planted areas to a depth of 6-8. Three inches of organic planting soil mix shall then be thoroughly amended into the previously rototilled area to a depth of 6-8. If necessary, existing soil shall be removed so that the finished bed area is at the appropriate elevation in respect to the adjacent landscape, lawn and hardscape areas, and to adjacent structures.. Page 10 of 11
11 I7. The following specifications are to be added to the existing specifications for setting plants. These specifications are hereby incorporated into the planting specifications: All plants shall be centered in the planting holes and set upon at least 4 of compacted planting soil to such a depth the top of the ball root is 1 to 2 inches above finished grade so that finished grade level at which the plant rests after settlement and mulching will be the same at which the plant was grown. Container-grown plants shall be carefully removed from the container so as to avoid damage to the root system. No burlapped plants shall be completely unwrapped; rather the burlap loosened and pulled down from the top 1/3 or so of the rootball. Wire mesh shall also be bent down from the top 1/3 of the rootball and tucked under or snipped off. Nylon straps and any other non-biodegradable material shall be completely removed prior to installation. All root control bags and synthetic burlap shall not be entirely removed, but the sides and bottom thoroughly sliced to allow unrestricted root growth. The top edge of the bag shall be pulled down so as too not become a wick for water absorption. Roots shall be spread in their normal position, and all frayed or broken roots shall be cut off cleanly. Planting holes shall be thoroughly backfilled with specified soil mixture to 3-4 from the top of the rootball. Specified fertilizer and fertilizer tabs shall be installed pursuant to manufacturer s instructions. Soil saucers shall be formed around the trees and shrubs to hold and retain water. No filling around trunks will be permitted. Care must be taken by the contractor to set the plants to achieve the intended compositional character of landscape, with consideration for the best exposure of each plant s good side to adjacent structure, walks, etc. Page 11 of 11
