1 Associate Degree Program The associate degree nursing (ADN) program prepares the student for a career as a Registered Nurse. Upon satisfactory completion of the curriculum, the student is awarded an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree and is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered. Admission is offered typically in winter and summer quarters. Applicants must be fluent in the English language (verbal and written), and possess the physical and emotional ability to complete the program. Students enrolling in this program should be aware that a criminal history investigation will be required after admission and may affect their continued enrollment. The applicant should also be aware that some clinical facilities are randomly screening for drug usage. Essential Requirements for Students The nursing profession is a highly respected field. The nursing faculty has an obligation to socialize students into the profession beginning with the point of entering the program. Students will be held to the essential requirements below: Observation Use of the physical senses (e.g., ability to visualize color changes in the skin, hear the heart and lungs, feel masses, etc.). Communication Effective communication (reading, writing, speaking) including the ability to process and communicate information in a timely, succinct, yet comprehensive manner. Demonstration of responsive, empathetic listening to establish rapport, recognition of the significance of nonverbal responses, etc. Fluency in the English language (as it is the only language formally used in healthcare in the U.S.). Motor In order to succeed in the TCC Program, a student must be able to consistently perform certain physical and mental tasks in a variety of settings. A general nursing student job description is available upon request. It was developed to assist in outlining these basic requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to determine what, if any, accommodations would need to be made for the student to perform the job successfully. This information must be provided in writing to the Associate Dean for in advance. This is done to allow adequate time to determine reasonable accommodations and to make necessary arrangements. A temporary disability will be handled in the same way as a permanent one. A written release from a primary care provider may be required to clear the student to perform all tasks. Students must meet all minimum requirements of all nursing program clinical affiliate agencies. Program Cost Figures are estimates only and are subject to change. Apply to TCC Apply online or in person (Bldg. 7). There is no application fee. Please note that it takes 24 hours for the system to generate your student ID number and access to the student portal mytcc. TCC student ID number and Check your for a welcome message from TCC. You ll receive an assigned TCC student ID number and directions to activate it. Access your TCC student through your portal. Check your TCC regularly it s how the college officially communicates with you. Information Session These sessions are held on a regular basis and last approximately 1.5 hours. Applicants will be given information on the nursing profession and the nursing program application procedures. Check the website for dates and times: If you need further advising, contact the Counseling & Advising Center at Complete all prerequisites All prerequisites must be completed before applying to the nursing program with a B or better. Unsuccessful attempts more than five years old are disregarded. Each course must be successfully passed within two attempts to achieve a grade of B or better. These attempts include all withdrawals as well as grades B- and below. Submit official transcripts from other institutions by the published application deadline. Official transcripts (prerequisite courses, completion of an LPN degree or other courses pertaining to the application) from other institutions must be sent to Enrollment Services before the application deadline. Do not send transcripts directly to the nursing program. LPN License in the State of Washington Verification of your current LPN unencumbered license in the State of Washington is required. The license can be accessed at the LPN license website: SearchCriteria.aspx. Documentation must be uploaded as an attachment to your nursing program application by the published application deadline. Take the ATI Mobility Exam at TCC ATI unofficial test transcripts will be included as attachments with your application. See LPN Placement ATI Mobility Exam section this page. If exam scores are below the cut score, the applicant will not be eligible for entry. Notification of Acceptance: See Overview of the Lottery Process (page 5) Selected applicants will be notified through TCC and posted on the website. Acceptance cannot be deferred to a future quarter. Those not accepted must reapply to be considered in the next lottery. LPN Placement ATI Mobility Exam LPN placement in TCC s Program is based upon knowledge of care for the childbearing family (content taught in Level 2 and 3 of the ADN program). Students are categorized for potential level entry by scores on the ATI Mobility Exam. All LPN to RN applicants are required to take the RN Maternal-Newborn Care ATI exam. With a score of 60 percent or greater, students are eligible to enter Level 3 of the part-time TCC Program. If a student passes the RN Maternal-Newborn Care ATI exam, they can take the RN Care of Children ATI exam. A score of 60 percent or greater on both exams allows the student to enter Level 4 of the full-time TCC Program. More information regarding the ATI exam: The exam may be attempted two times in a three-year period. Exam results (which expire after five years) must be uploaded with the online nursing program application. Prerequisite courses do not have to be completed prior to taking the ATI Mobility Exam. Students waiting for approval of their LPN license do not need to wait to take the ATI Mobility Exam. CHEM& 121 BIOL& 241 BIOL& 242 Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry Prerequisite: CHEM& 110 or high school chemistry and either MATH 095 or higher or TMATH 100 (math may be taken concurrently). Human Anatomy and Physiology I Prerequisite: CHEM& 110 with a minimum grade of C and BIOL& 160 with a minimum grade of C. Human Anatomy and Physiology II Prerequisite: BIOL& 241 with a grade of C or higher. ENGL& 101 English Composition I Prerequisite: ENGL/ 095 with a minimum grade of C or assessment at or above college-level reading and writing. Or ENGL& 102 may be substituted for ENGL& 101 Online Application Process TCC s nursing program uses an online admission process. To apply you must be an admitted or registered student at Tacoma Community College and have access to the student portal (mytcc) and a TCC student account. There is no fee to apply to the nursing program. How to access the application 1. Sign into the TCC portal. 2. Go to your Quick Links area and if it is not shown on the Quick Links, expand the All Reports and Applications. The following is just a sample of what you will see in the portal. PSYC& 100 BIOL& 260 General Psychology Prerequisite: ENGL/ 095 with a minimum grade of C or assessment at college-level reading and writing. General Microbiology Prerequisite: CHEM& 121 and either BIOL& 160 or BIOL& 222. Recommended: CHEM& 131. Prerequisite which must be completed prior to beginning the program. Requires a C or better in each of the courses below. PSYC& 200 Lifespan Psychology Prerequisite: PSYC& 100 with a minimum grade of C. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS which must be completed prior to graduation. The nursing program encourages completion prior to beginning the program. Requires a C or better in each of the courses below. SOC& 101* or ANTH& 206 CMST& 220* or CMST& 101 or CMST 110 Introduction to Sociology Prerequisite: ENGL/ 095 with a minimum grade of C or assessment at college-level reading and writing. Cultural Anthropology Prerequisite: ENGL/ 095 with a minimum grade of C or assessment at college-level reading and writing. Public Speaking Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 with a minimum grade of C (may be taken concurrently). Introduction to Communication Multicultural Communication Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 with a minimum grade of C (may be taken concurrently). * Recommended: SOC& 101 and CMST& 220 also meet the pre-nursing transfer degree requirement. 3. Select the Academics tab and click on Make Button. 4. You should see a button called Allied Health/ on your Quick Links list. 5. You should then see the screens to upload all required documents. (Note: The application involves selecting choices for three items and then confirming your application.) 6. When you have completed the application, the system will send a confirmation to your TCC . It is the full responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all application materials and required documentation are received by the published application deadline. Students do not need to wait UNTIL the deadline date to submit an application.

5 v7may2013 Tacoma Community College I LPN to RN Program 5 {after acceptance} Next Steps Applications are processed within four weeks after the published deadline. Qualified applicants are entered into the TCC nursing lottery, which selects students for each nursing program. If your application is disqualified for any reason, you will be notified by TCC student prior to the lottery taking place. Overview of the Lottery Process TCC s math department developed a formula which randomly generates the lottery list. If you qualify for the lottery, the last six digits of your student ID will be listed on the nursing lottery web page a few days prior to the lottery. Positions will be filled from the top of the list until all open positions are filled. The lottery results will be posted on the TCC website at Selected applicants will be notified by TCC student one to two days after drawing. If a student is accepted, and then declines, the next randomly generated number will be accepted. This can be a lengthy process, so please be patient. The lottery process will remain in effect for all future application deadlines until further notice. LPN Articulation Courses Students must be informed of acceptance into TCC s Program prior to taking this course. All advanced standing LPN students are required to take the LPN Articulation theory, clinical and lab courses: NURS 151, 161, 162, 163 for Level 3 entry NURS 151, 261, 262, 263 for Level 4 entry These courses are designed to transition the LPN from their current role to that of an RN student. The intent is successful integration into one of the designated entry points of the nursing program. Courses are taught at least once per year and must be completed satisfactorily (with a grade of C or better) prior to beginning the regular nursing courses. New Student Orientation If you are selected and accept a position in nursing program, you will be required to attend the mandatory orientation. Specific information regarding this orientation will be sent by TCC student after your acceptance into the program. Clinical Requirements The protection of vulnerable populations is paramount in nursing. Health clearance procedures and requirements will be sent by and explained at the new student nursing orientation. In order to complete the required clinical rotations, new students must provide the required documentation listed below prior to starting nursing classes. Students must also meet all minimum requirements of all clinical agencies with which the nursing program affiliates (Note: These requirements are subject to change). Transportation & Child Care It is the student s responsibility to arrange for dependable transportation to and from the clinical site. The student must have reliable child/dependent care available as needed. Background Check Certain conviction history will exclude persons from healthcare employment. If you have any prior convictions, even if you believe they may be sealed, please contact the Program Secretary at cbrubaker@tacomacc.edu. Additional Requirements: CPR card Only the American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) for Professional Rescuer will be accepted. Online courses are not acceptable. Your name must appear on this card. Health Insurance Proof of coverage with coverage period. If the name on the card does not match yours (the student) proof of coverage from the provider is required. HIV/AIDS training Certificate of completion showing seven hours of training. Vehicle Insurance Proof of coverage with coverage period. If you don t own a vehicle or own a vehicle but don t drive, you will need to submit a written statement signed and dated by you.

6 6 LPN to RN Program I Tacoma Community College v7may2013 Program Schedule LPN to RN Proof of Immunizations Hepatitis B Series - Proof of immunity by vaccination (3 doses) OR titer: If you received the three required doses as a child, a titer is not recommended. If you received the three required doses as an adult or if the clinical facility requires a titer, the recommended procedure is as follows: You will need to get one booster immunization and then have a titer drawn in days. If negative you should complete a second and third dose and repeat titer. If negative you are considered a non-responder. Student will be allowed in clinical during repeat series. Influenza Proof of immunity by vaccination OR signed waiver. This vaccination must be current (based upon current flu season requirements). You will need to follow additional clinical requirements if you choose not to be vaccinated. MMR (Measles (rubeolla), Mumps, Rubella) Proof of immunity by vaccination (2 doses) or titer. PPD (TB) We require the 2-step PPD. If the first PPD test is negative then you will need to obtain a second PPD within 1-3 weeks. Yearly annuals are required after your 2-step PPD. If you have a history of positive TB results you must provide proof of chest x-ray (lifetime, unless symptomatic) and submit negative symptom check for the past 12 months. If you have no proof of a positive TB test you will need to retest with the 2-step TB test. If you have a history of BCG vaccination you must have a Quantiferon test. If negative ok, if positive chest x-ray will be required. NOTE: If administered concurrently, or shortly after, a live virus vaccine (such as varicella), a TB skin test may produce a false negative. Tetanus/Pertussis (Tdap) If immunized after 06/10/07. Vaccination must be within 10 years. Will not accept Td. Varicella (Chicken Pox) - Proof of immunity by vaccination or titer. 9 v7may2013 Tacoma Community College I LPN to RN Program 9 Eligibility to write the National Licensing Exam for Registered Nurses Registered Nurses are licensed by the State of Washington. In order to be eligible to write the licensing exam, students must graduate from a stateaccredited nursing school. Applicants must file their intent to take the exam 60 days prior to the expected date, with a form supplied by the Associate Dean for. The exam fees must be paid at the same time. Graduating students must answer the following questions, which are excerpted from the Practice Law: 1. Do you have a medical condition, which in any way impairs or limits your ability to practice your profession with reasonable skill and safety? If yes, please explain. Medical condition includes physiological conditions or disorders, such as, but not limited to orthopedic, visual, speech, and hearing impairments, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, mental retardation, emotional or mental illness, learning disabilities, HIV disease, tuberculosis, drug addiction, and alcoholism. 1a. If you answered yes to question 1, please explain whether and how the limitations or impairments caused by your medical condition are reduced or eliminated because you received ongoing treatment (with or without medications). 1b. If you answered yes to question 1, please explain whether and how the limitations and impairments caused by your medical condition are reduced or eliminated because of your field of practice, the setting or the manner in which you have chosen to practice. If you answered yes to question 1, the licensing authority (Board/ Commission or Department as appropriate) will make an individualized assessment of the nature, the severity, and the duration of the risks associated with an ongoing medical condition, the treatment ongoing, and the factors in 1b so as to determine whether an unrestricted license should be issued, whether conditions should be imposed or whether you are not eligible for licensure. 2. Do you currently use chemical substance(s) in any way, which impair or limit your ability to practice your profession with reasonable skill and safety? If yes, please explain. Currently means recently enough so that the use of drugs may have an ongoing impact on one s functioning as a licensee, and includes at least the past two years. Chemical substances includes alcohol, drugs or medications, including those taken pursuant to a valid prescription for legitimate medical purposes and in accordance with the prescriber s direction, as well as those used illegally. 3. Have you ever been diagnosed as having or have you ever been treated for pedophilia, exhibitionism, voyeurism or frotteurism? 4. Are you currently engaged in the illegal use of controlled substances? Currently means recently enough so that the use of drugs may have an ongoing impact on one s functioning as a licensee, and includes at least the past two years. Illegal use of controlled substances means the use of controlled substances obtained illegally (e.g., heroin, cocaine), as well as the use of legally controlled substances, not taken in accordance with the directions of a licensed healthcare practitioner. 5. Have you ever been convicted, entered a plea of guilty, nolo contendere or a plea similar effect, or had prosecution or sentence deferred or suspended, in connection with: a. The use or distribution of controlled substances or legend drugs? b. A charge of a sex offense? c. Any other crime, other than minor traffic infractions (including driving under the influence and reckless driving)? 6. Have you ever been found in any civil, administrative or criminal proceeding to have: a. Possessed, used, prescribed for use or distributed controlled substances for legend drugs in any way other than for legitimate or therapeutic purposes, diverted controlled substances or legend drugs, violated any drug law or prescribed controlled substances for yourself? b. Committed any act involving moral turpitude, dishonesty or corruption? c. Violated any state or federal law or rule regulating the practice of a healthcare profession? 7. Have you ever been found in any proceeding to have violated any state or federal law or rule regulating the practice of a healthcare profession? If yes, explain and provide copies of all judgments, decisions, and agreements. 8. Have you ever had any license, certificate, registration or other privilege to practice a healthcare profession denied, revoked, suspended or restricted by a state, federal or foreign authority, or have you ever surrendered such credential to avoid or in connection with action by such authority? 9. Have you ever been named in any civil suit or suffered any civil judgment for incompetence, negligence or malpractice in connection with the practice of a healthcare profession? Students who answer yes to any of the questions, should make early application to the Washington State Commission. The Commission acts on each case individually at the time of application for licensure. Provide an explanation and copies of all judgments, decisions, orders, agreements, and surrenders. A dishonest answer to any of the questions is grounds for revocation of a license in and of itself.
