2 Discovery Education video shown at the end of class can be found here: Lecture Notes: Production and Consumption Examples o Chart from pg o How Peanut Butter is produced and distributed Someone wants peanut butter to make a sandwich People grow and harvest the peanuts the peanuts are crushed and combined with other ingredients to make peanut butter the peanut butter is then sent to grocery stores people buy the peanut butter satisfaction is reached Supply and Demand Discussion o Discuss individual supply and demand curves Supply o o represents how much of a product there is UPWARD sloping Demand Represents how much of a product the people want DOWNWARD sloping Remind students to remember Demand and Downward both start with the letter D Talk about how supply and demand relate Where they cross is the MARKET PRICE Discuss what happens to price as supply and demand change Increase in supply with no increase of demand MAKES PRICE GO DOWN Increase in demand with no increase of supply MAKES PRICE GO UP Other examples of the sort Connecting Supply/Demand to Production/Consumption o Remind students we touched on this the day before with wants The more in demand a product is, the more likely it will be supplied (produced) for them to buy (consume)
3 Connect to wants activity that occurred the day before by reiterating that those items that were in the highest demand were more likely going to be supplied to the population Writing Assignment and Rubric: Vocabulary Writing Assignment Purpose The purpose behind this assignment is to get you to practice and use the vocabulary from this unit in a fun and educationally productive way. The more practice you have with the words, the better you will understand them! This will make learning about economics much easier because you will have a mastery of the key words from the unit. What Are We Doing? For this assignment, you will write a story about Gary the Grape and how he and his friends are produced into grape jelly (something ALL grapes strive for!). Gary and his friends are very excited to be made into jelly, but what I need you to do is tell me how that happens (hint: PRODUCTION/CONSUMPTION CHAIN). You can be as creative in telling the story as you like, so long as the story is accurate and follows the production/consumption chain. Requirements You must use at least 8 of the 12 from the unit in the story, and they must be used CORRECTLY (ex: the demand for grape jelly was very high, so producers decided to use Gary and his friends to supply the public). That was an extreme example, but you get the idea. Just like in the example above, the you use MUST BE UNDERLINED. The story must accurately portray the Production/Consumption chain THIS STORY IS DUE ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 28 TH

Quiz to ascertain understanding of unit vocabulary Transition: Just Do It question used as the transition: How do wants affect what companies/individuals produce? 2 Discussion of Production and Consumption This discussion and series of examples serves as an
5 introduction to the students of the importance of the Production/Consumption chain. The textbook provides a great example of what a Production/Consumption Chart looks like ON PAGES OF THE TEACHERS TEXTBOOK, and a teacher created version of this chart (to be drawn on the board) will be shown and explained to students step by step. Transition: Students will be introduced to activity 3 Production and Consumption Activity Students will be split up into groups (3-4 students in each), and they will create their own Production/Consumption Chart about a providing people with Lemonade from their own Lemonade Stand. The first two steps of the process will be given to the groups to get them started, and as they work the teacher will walk around to the different groups providing help and assistance when needed. After, the production charts will be hung around the room Discussion of Supply and Demand - This discussion and series of examples serves as an introduction to the students of the importance of Supply and Demand and their effect on price. The discussion will also focus on how Supply and Demand affect the Production/Consumption chain. Students will TAKE NOTES during the lecture. Discussion will be supplemented with a short video about supply and demand. Students have to create their own Production/Distribution Chart. Reinforces Production/Consumption in a new light (introducing Supply and Demand) Closure (How does this come back to the guiding question): Students will be asked to answer the following two questions after watching the video: 1. What happens when the demand for a product at a certain price is HIGHER than what the producers are willing to sell? ANSWER: a shortage 2. What happens when the supply of a product at a certain price is HIGHER than what people are willing to pay for it? ANSWER: surplus ASSIGN STUDENTS WRITING ASSIGNMENT THAT WILL BE DUE ON FRIDAY 2/24.
