2 SEMESTER 3 ( ) Credits: 3+1 (Theory + Tutorial) Contact hours per week: 4 (Theory) Objective of the course: This course introduces students to concepts in database design and analysis. The objective of this course is to expose the student to the basic concepts involved in designing and building a database. The ultimate aim is to encourage the usage of database management systems for effective data management. Student learning outcomes/objectives: At the closing stage of the course, the students will be able to understand the database management. Instructional methods and pedagogy: Faculty members shall explain in a class room using black board and multimedia projector through PowerPoint presentation. Unit II 2 Relational Model and Entity Relationship Model: Structure of relational database, Database schema, Keys, Schema diagrams, Relational query language, Relational operations, Entity- Relationship model, Constraints, E-R diagrams. Unit III 3 Relational Database Design: Features of good relational design, Functional Dependency, Keys and FDs, Trivial and non-trivial FD, Closure of FD set, Closure of attributes, Normalization-1NF, 2NF, 3NF. Unit IV 4 Introduction to Structured Query Language: Data types, Data definition language (DDL) - CREATE, ALTER, TRUNCATE, DROP, Data manipulation language (DML) INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, Operators Arithmetic, Comparison, Logical, SQL functions single row function, Date functions, Numeric functions, Character functions, Conversion functions, Miscellaneous functions, Group functions, Group by, Having, Order by clause. Unit V 5 Database Integrity Constraints: Domain integrity constraints Not Null, Check, Entity integrity constraints Unique, Primary key, Referential integrity constraints Foreign key, On delete cascade. Unit VI 6 Set Operators and Joins: Set operators Union, Union all, Intersect, Minus, Joins Natural join, outer join, cartesian join

Student learning outcomes / objectives: At the closing stage of the course, the students will be able to understand the fundamental concepts of database management. Instructional method and pedagogy: Experiments are to be performed in laboratory. Sr. No. Fundamentals of Mechanical Systems (Practical) Hours 1 Introduction to DBMS, SQL and SQL tools. 2 2 Implement the following database schema: - Student (Student_ID, FName, LName, Address, Mobile_No) - Subject (Subject_ID, SubjectName, Credits) - Instructor (Instructor_ID, Inst_FName, Inst_LName, DOJ) 4 - Teaches (InstructorI_D, Subject_ID) - Studies (Student_ID, Subject_ID) 3 Draw the E-R diagram of the above schema. 1 4 Draw the E-R diagram of the library schema. 1 5 Execute the queries based on fetching the records from given tables. 4 6 Execute the queries based on DML statements. 4 7 Execute the queries based on aggregate functions and joins. 4 8 Execute the queries based on group by and having clause. 4
