The Stamford Endowed Schools consist of the co-educational Stamford Junior School and Stamford Nursery School for children aged 2-11, Stamford High School for girls aged 11-18, and Stamford School for boys aged There is also a Sixth Form which teaches boys and girls together across our two senior schools. This structure provides the ideal balance, giving our students the co-educational experience at junior level and then again at Sixth Form which they will need to thrive in the world beyond education whilst also recognising the strength of teaching boys and girls separately through the years leading towards GCSE examination. Boarding is available for pupils aged 8 and older and offers a further dimension to a Stamford education. We offer a wide and varied curriculum at GCSE and A-Level, and our pupils consistently achieve outstanding examination results. We also pride ourselves on developing well-rounded students who leave our schools already equipped with a wealth of life experience. Our extra-curricular activities range from trips all over the world to more locally based enrichment activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award. There are debating societies, drama productions, science clubs and lectures, in addition to a wide sporting and musical programme. We are a valued part of the community of Stamford, a town rich in history and tradition. Each year, our students support a local charity and frequently launch their own endeavours to support a local worthy cause. Most importantly, we are friendly and welcoming schools where children are at their happiest and most stimulated. Parents didn t need to tell us that this is a happy school; we could see it for ourselves. The girls knew how fortunate they were to be somewhere like Stamford. We found them unpretentious, straight forward and open. All quotes in italics are taken from The Good Schools Guide, the leading appraisal of schools in the UK.

All children learn musical instruments. Recorder for the early years, strings from Year 2 and the children can branch into a range of instruments from Year 3. Aims and Objectives To create a happy, exciting and supportive environment in which learning is the priority and where young people are inspired to achieve their best in all aspects of School life to develop their intellectual curiosity to have a caring and respectful attitude towards each member of our diverse and welcoming community Through their experiences at the Schools, they perceive no obstacle in life to be insurmountable and will exceed expectations in whatever they do. Staff feel valued and empowered and are committed to the well-being of the young people in their care. Parents feel involved with the Schools and work in partnership with us. Alumni feel connected to the Schools and act proudly as ambassadors for us. Children of families from all walks of life have the opportunity to gain a place at our Schools and the surrounding community enjoys and benefits from the presence, activities and facilities of the Schools. Our Values At the Stamford Endowed Schools, we have a special commitment to the following six values. Intellectual curiosity Wealth of opportunities Enjoyment and happiness Well grounded individuals Extending our community Commitment of and to staff Equality Statement The objectives of the Schools, the aims of the teaching staff and the principles of boarding will be applied to all children irrespective of differences in ethnic background, culture, language, religion, gender and physical ability, so long as in the last matter the child is able to involve himself or herself in the activity concerned. Equally these differences will be recognised and respected. Curriculum The curriculum is considerably broader than acquisition of knowledge and skills in the classroom. Through a range of enhancement activities, and interaction with the staff, we hope that pupils will learn to enjoy their subjects and studying, and relate their work at school to a wider range of concepts so that they can be successful in Higher Education and open-minded and intellectually adaptable in later life. Across the three Schools, the staff/ pupil ratio is 1 to 10 (the nursery ratios adhere to EYFS regulations), providing excellent care and attention to all pupils. Class sizes vary at different levels at the Schools and for different subjects. Most Lower School groups for core subjects will be between 15 and 24, and smaller for some optional subjects. In the Sixth Form a typical class size is about 12 though there may be groups of up to 16 in popular options, and considerably smaller groups in certain subjects. ILIC The ILIC programme (Independent Learning and Intellectual Curiosity) harnesses pupils individual creative talents in terms of their own thinking and learning and challenges the view that learning is a prescribed activity with the teacher leading activities within the classroom and pupils occupying the place of passive learners. The ILIC programme also encourages teachers to challenge their own perceptions of what makes a good lesson and to experiment with a variety of styles of delivery in order to stretch and challenge as well as helping to address issues of differentiation. ILIC seeks to produce confident, happy, imaginative and creative thinkers and learners who are able to move with intellectual maturity to their next stage of learning when they leave school. Stamford Junior School Key Stage 1 and 2 In addition to the National Curriculum core subjects (English, ICT, Mathematics, and Science) and foundation subjects (Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education) being taught, pupils experience an exciting introduction to Modern Foreign Languages, including French and Spanish. They also enjoy weekly swimming lessons throughout the school year in our own indoor heated pool. Pupils are taught core subjects by their form teachers, with specialist teaching being provided in areas such as PE, Games, Art, Languages and Music. ICT is used to enhance the teaching of all subjects. We are proud to offer instrumental string lessons to all Year 2 pupils, giving them a solid foundation so they can excel musically in later life. Parents are sold on the diamond structure. It s the best of both worlds we heard a number of times.

Stretched but not stressed is the strap line that sums up the approach to ensuring pupils have a balanced approach to life. Stamford High School and Stamford School up to GCSE In the first three years (Key Stage 3) of the senior schools we offer a wide and varied curriculum over and above the National Curriculum. All pupils study Maths, English, all three Sciences, Physical Education, Art, French, Design Technology, Geography, German, History, Latin, Music, Religious Studies, Russian, Spanish, Drama, Food (SHS only), Textiles (SHS only), and Classical Civilisation. From this firm foundation, GCSE courses are chosen. All pupils take Maths, English (Language and Literature), Physics, Chemistry and Biology and a Modern Foreign Language (French, German, Russian or Spanish). In addition, pupils are able to choose to take a further three subjects from the following list to make a programme of nine or ten full GCSEs at the end of Year 11: Art, Classical Civilisation, Design Technology, Drama, Food (SHS only), Geography, German, History, Latin, Music, Philosophy and Ethics, Physical Education, Russian, Spanish, Textiles (SHS only). Pupils are encouraged to add a humanity and a creative subject to their core curriculum to give balance to their studies. There may be some timetabling limitations on the choice of subject combinations though some may be able to take further language courses having taken French a year early (SHS only). Sixth Form The choice of Sixth Form programme can be made from a list of 27 subjects. These subjects are taught in a co-educational school environment with full tutorial support, careers and Higher Education guidance, and a wide programme of extra-curricular activities. Most students study three A-level subjects although there is the opportunity to take a fourth A-level in a reduced range of subjects or an AS. For those not taking a further academic option there is an Enrichment Programme which allows the Extended Project Qualification or a range of other courses to be taken. Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Classical Civilisation, Design and Technology, Economics, English Literature, Further Mathematics, Geography, Government and Politics, History, Home Economics Food, Home Economics Textiles, Latin, Mathematics, Modern Languages (French, German, Spanish, Russian), Music, Music Technology, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Religious Studies and Theatre Studies. They have daily contact with the pupil and this ensures the high quality pastoral care which is part of the ethos of the Schools. The Tutor or Form Teacher has a full picture of the pupil and is aware of his or her interests and hobbies, achievements and relationships with others, as well as their academic development. The Tutor or Form Teacher is a main point of contact for parents with the Schools and will be supported by Heads of Year, Heads of Sections and by members of the Senior Leadership Teams. A few parents who had approached the school about pastoral concerns had felt very well supported lots of unobtrusive intervention and good advice. Boarding Helping children grow into independent, well-rounded, happy young adults is at the core of everything we do. There is no better way to give your child a headstart in achieving these values than by making them a part of our boarding community. The students who choose to board at our Schools quickly develop strong friendships, giving them a bedrock of support as they make their educational journey from our Junior School through the senior schools and into the Sixth Form. Underpinning this is a strong academic advantage gained from having qualified teachers on hand beyond the end of the school day. Perhaps most importantly, boarding offers children the chance to get the most out of life at an age when new experiences are vital for broadening horizons. This makes for an extremely rich, full and rounded lifestyle. Ofsted Inspectors recently designated our boarding provision as outstanding. This is the highest grade achievable and means that the standard of provision is of exceptionally high quality. The criteria were; helping children to be healthy, protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them to stay safe, helping children to achieve well and enjoy what they do, helping children make a positive contribution, achieving economic wellbeing, and organisation. All areas were deemed outstanding. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere within boarding is a significant feature of the school as a whole and enables boarders to feel well cared for and safe. Recent boarding inspection. Parents say that communication is very strong both ways. CCTV CCTV has been installed in and around the school site, including the Boarding Houses, for the safety and security of all members of the community.

The quality of the big public music and drama occasions is very high, drawing on all three schools. Communicating with Parents We are committed to ensuring a high level of communication with parents, so that they are kept informed of the many events and activities at the Schools. Information is disseminated in a variety of formats, both offline and online, to make keeping up-to-date as simple and direct as possible. We have a strong presence on social media including twitter and Facebook and we also produce termly newsletters and an annual review. For more information about the various ways we communicate with parents, please go to /parentcommunication. Personal and Social Education We seek to further the personal and social development of our pupils in all our endeavours but particularly in a specific programme encompassing themes such as healthy living, citizenship, personal development and careers. We want our students to understand the crucial, but sometimes challenging, elements of life in our society and formulate healthy attitudes towards them. These issues are normally discussed in a weekly lesson with tutors but there are also full days when a topic can be explored in greater depth, often with the assistance of a visiting expert. The careers department are also highly involved in the programme. Before-and-After-School Care Resources and Facilities Throughout the Schools modern and lively teaching techniques are used and the resources and facilities are excellent. Lessons in many departments are enlivened by the use of videos, DVDs, interactive whiteboards and PowerPoint presentations, with most classrooms and laboratories having data projectors. The Modern Languages Departments have digital video/sound language laboratories which have satellite receiving facilities. Drama, within or outside the academic timetable, draws on the resources of a newly built teaching and performing space. There is a substantial number of support staff. The Modern Languages teaching is enhanced by French, Spanish and German assistants. There are regular outings to museums, galleries, university departments and theatres. Information Technology Information Technology at Stamford relies on an extensive and well-used school computer network of around 1,000 desktops and laptops across the Schools. There is Wi-Fi throughout the Schools, all pupils have their own directories on the system and instant access to all of our information and communications services. The Noticeboard allows messages entered anywhere in the school to be read at all other points and the system allows smooth communication between pupils, staff and anyone outside. These and other facilities at Stamford make the computer network a resource for daily use by the whole school community. Sport features highly even the nonsporty pupil is encouraged to have a go. A strength of the school is the number of teams in different sports. The Junior School offers a Before-and-After-School Care facility, both pre-school from 8am and each afternoon when school finishes, between 3.30pm and 6pm and for those in Years 3 to 6 up to 8pm. After a drink and snack, the pupils are able to spend time doing their homework in a supervised session or take part in craft and games activities. Weather permitting, outdoor games take place and there are computers, television and videos available for the pupils to use. For pupils staying up to 8pm a hot, sit-down meal with boarders is provided. Stamford School offers a very flexible After-School Care service. We provide supervision for boys between 4pm and 6pm and boys can be registered for After-School Care any day by contacting the Lower Middle School secretary. After-School Care is based in Lower Middle School and boys are able to do their homework and use IT facilities. Careers We offer a comprehensive careers education and guidance programme designed to enable our students to make suitable and informed choices about their futures beyond school. Most careers education is delivered within curriculum time, but there are also various special events, such as Year 12 mock interview day. In the Sixth Form, there are particularly thorough and extensive preparations for Higher Education. Individual guidance interviews are available to all students and parents are fully involved in the decision-making process, with a number of parents evenings being held such as Year 11 options evening. We have very well-stocked careers libraries and a range of ICT software to support the programme. At Stamford High School, girls who choose to stay behind other than for official after school activities or who cannot be collected until later should either be in the small ICT room which is supervised by a School Prefect until 5pm or the Library which is supervised until 6pm (at 5pm girls should move from the small ICT room to the Library, where computers are available). A visit to the music department revealed a stash of new Macs for composing and music tech as well as the usual instruments.

All parents to whom we spoke, mentioned value for money. Destination of Leavers The large majority of leavers go on to university on completion of the Upper Sixth with a good number to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. Detailed lists of the precise destination of leavers are produced annually by the Schools and these are shown on the website. Extra-Curricular Activities Games There is a full range of activities which includes the following: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross-Country, Dance, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Karate, Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Tae Kwon Do, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo. Music Orchestras, Wind Bands, Quartets and Choirs are organised across the Schools. Individual music examinations can be taken in a wide range of instruments. Drama School productions take place annually at various age groups throughout the Schools. Productions take place either in the school halls, at the Birkbeck Studio or the Stamford town theatres. A new Performing Arts Centre caters for the huge growth in Performing Arts at the schools. Pupils are also able to participate in individual speech and drama lessons, which will lead on to their LAMDA Examinations. CCF Girls and boys have the opportunity of joining one of the three CCF sections once they are in Year 10. They have available a number of courses and camps which they can attend. The shooting team that is associated with the CCF have recently been national full-bore champions at Bisley and won the Country Life Small Bore Trophy. Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme During the past year our pupils have gained over 100 Bronze, 80 Silver and 40 Gold Awards. There have been major expeditions to Patagonia and Borneo and the pupils regularly make use of the schools barn in the Lake District as a base for expeditions. Other activities during the week A variety of other activities take place during lunchtimes and after school during the week. These include ESU Debating Competitions, Bank of England Target 2.0 Competition, Chess Clubs, Dance Clubs, Book Clubs and a wide variety of Games activities. Saturday morning activities On a number of Saturday mornings during the school term, a voluntary programme of Saturday activities is available to students from Year 4 to Year 13. This enables them to choose from a wide range of activities on offer throughout the year. The total number of activities offered is over 80. They include activities of a physical nature (Table Tennis, Football, Tennis, Badminton, Sailing), additional academic studies (Short Course GCSE Art, GCSE Photography), academic development work (examination support lessons across the range of academic subjects, additional tuition for music exams), recreational activities (Genealogy, Chess, Bridge, Technology Club) and also the opportunity to use facilities at the School (ICT Rooms, Library and Careers Library). The activities are voluntary and take place in an informal atmosphere. Every parent we spoke to gave glowing references; Excellent, I would recommend it every time, they turn out grounded, confident pupils, said one.

Pupil Admissions Pupils are admitted to the Stamford Endowed Schools as fee-paying day pupils at any age from 2 to 18 as follows: Age (as at 1 September) 2 or 3 boys and girls Stamford Nursery School 4 11 boys and girls Stamford Junior School 11+ boys Stamford School 11+ girls Stamford High School Pupils are admitted to the Stamford Endowed Schools as fee-paying boarding pupils (three night, weekly or full-boarding) at any age from 8 to 18. In exceptional circumstances, at the discretion of the Principal, pupils younger than the age of 8 years may be admitted as boarding pupils. Other than at the very youngest ages (under the age of 6) admission is based on assessment through appropriate entrance tests, administered by the school, or results in public examinations, and, where appropriate, a reference from the pupil s previous school. Professional judgement about a pupil s academic suitability rests with the Principal and the Head of the School responsible for offering places. Where a place is not offered to a pupil there is no right of appeal. Admission to the Stamford Endowed Schools is subject to parents or the person with parental responsibility for their child accepting and complying with Terms and Conditions of Entry as published by the Governors and amended periodically. Entry below the age of 11 into Stamford Junior School Children in the Stamford Nursery School have an automatic offer of a place in Stamford Junior School Reception Class unless there are strong reasons for the pupil not to progress. In such cases, parents will be advised well before they have to make a decision that their child is not ready to progress into the Reception Class. External Reception candidates attend a taster session before any offer of place is made. Entry into Years 1 6 is by assessment and report from the previous school.. Entry at age 11 Pupils from Stamford Junior School have automatic entry into the senior schools, unless there are strong reasons for the pupil not to progress. They need not take the entrance examination. However if any pupil at Stamford Junior School wishes to be considered for an Academic Scholarship they must take the entrance exam. If routine Junior School assessments give cause for concern about a pupil s ability to cope in the senior schools, that pupil s profile will be discussed with the Principal and any doubts about the pupil progressing satisfactorily into the senior school will be discussed with parents well before a decision has to be made. Applicants from other junior schools take the entrance examinations in January. Places are awarded on a rank order basis by summing the age-related standardised scores on non-verbal reasoning, Mathematics and English papers. Applicants for the Academic Scholarship take the entrance tests and, if they attain the scholarship benchmark, will be invited to take an additional examination for scholarship. Places and scholarships are awarded accordingly. Bursaries will only be awarded to those families in proven financial need after completion of a standard statement from which their financial need can be assessed. Entry at intermediate ages up to GCSE Entry to Years 8 to 11 is considered on the basis of performance in either entrance tests in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning or Common Entrance Examinations, as relevant. Entry into the Sixth Form Entry into the Sixth Form is based on academic performance at GCSE (or equivalent) and (for external candidates) reference from the pupil s previous school. Experience shows that success at AS and A-Level depends on a good profile of GCSE grades with grade B being the usual minimum in most of the subjects to be studied at AS-Level. Where there is no equivalent subject studied at GCSE for A-Level then related subjects will be used as a guide. The normal guide to students and parents is for a Sixth Form entrant (internal and external) to have achieved at least 5 subjects at GCSE grade B or better. In cases where a student s disciplinary record or general approach to school has been a cause for concern, Governors reserve the right to refuse admission to the Sixth Form. In such cases, full consultation will have taken place with parents well before any final decision has to be taken. Assistance with fees SES Scholarships and Bursaries (Year 7 and above) An SES scholarship is a prestigious award which recognises a very high standard of achievement in a competitive examination or assessment, and carries with it the title of scholar for the winning boy or girl. It is not linked to parental income but can involve financial support. A student may apply for and be a warded more than one type of scholarship. They may add to this during their time at the Schools, but it is also understood that the awards will only continue subject to the appropriate level of commitment. Typically these scholarships amount to an annual award between 500 and 1,000 against the fees. In exceptional cases they can be as much as 2,000. A Stamford School boy could have a parent who is CEO of a multinational company or be a postman in the town, a huge strength of the school.

In cases where it would still be impossible for a scholarship winner to join the school for financial reasons, further bursarial support may be provided on a means-tested basis (please see the section Bursaries on page 20). Year 7 (11+) Academic Scholarships, Music Scholarships, and Sports Scholarships Register your son/daughter with us any time up to the end of the autumn term of Year 6 and complete scholarship applications by the closing date. If you wish for your son/daughter to be considered for scholarship you should complete the scholarship applications by the closing date. Academic Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of a strong performance in the entrance exam or in the Common Entrance exam and supportive reference from the Head of the current school. Music Scholarships auditions will take place during January. Art Scholarships the Head of Art will assess a portfolio of work supplied by the candidates and also invite the candidates to the school for a drawing test during January. Assessments for Sports Scholarships will involve group and individual sessions and will take place in January. Drama Scholarships the Head of Drama will assess the candidates through a group workshop and an individual audition as well as a formal interview during the January scholarship week. All-rounder Scholarships these scholarships are awarded to boys and girls who combine a strong performance in the entrance exam with clear potential in one or more of the following categories: music, drama, sport, art and design, and school or community leadership. Whilst the boy or girl may not currently be at the level which would demand an individual scholarship in one of these areas, he/she would clearly have great all-round potential. Applicants will be assessed on a written CV and an interview with the Head which will take place in January. Year 12 (Sixth Form, 16+) Register your son/daughter with us by Christmas of his/her year 11. Simple entry into the school will be on the basis of academic reference, GCSE predictions and character reference from his/her current school. Should you wish your son/daughter to be considered for one, or more, of the scholarships available, you should complete the scholarship applications by the closing date. Academic Scholarship a boy/girl should select two subjects from his/her current curriculum which will be examined on one of two scholarship exam dates which takes place in November or January. Music Scholarships auditions will take place during the November or January Scholarship Weeks. Art Scholarships the Head of Art will assess a portfolio of work supplied by the candidates and also invite the candidates to the school for a drawing test during the November or January Scholarship Weeks. Drama Scholarships the Head of Drama will assess the candidates through a group workshop and an individual audition as well as a formal interview during the November or January scholarship weeks. Sports Scholarships boys and girls competing for Sports Scholarships would expect to offer two sports for assessment, either two major team sports (rugby, hockey, cricket, netball) or one major team sport and one individual sport (athletics, swimming, tennis, squash, cross-country, sailing). Other sports may also be considered. We would expect the boys and girls to be at or moving towards representative level in at least one of the sports they are offering, with the potential to move through to regional and national level in at least one of the sports. Assessments for Sports Scholarships will involve group and individual sessions and will take place during the November or January Scholarship Weeks. All-rounder Scholarships these scholarships are awarded to boys and girls who combine a strong performance in the entrance exam with clear potential in one or more of the following categories: music, drama, sport, art and design and school or community leadership. Whilst the boy or girl may not currently be at the level which would demand an individual scholarship in one of these areas, he/she would clearly have great all-round potential. Applicants will be assessed on a written CV and an interview with the Head which will take place during the November or January Scholarships weeks. The joint sixth form allows for a really good range of subjects.

Bursaries These are means-tested awards made to the families of boys and girls who would otherwise not be able to benefit from a Stamford education. Further information on these bursaries is available from the school offices. Applications for bursaries need to be received in accordance with strict deadlines, the details of which can be obtained from the Admissions offices. These funds will be used in the first instance to help those families whose child has successfully won one of the scholarships shown above but who are still unable to pay all the fees. Bursary applications for boys and girls living in the UK are welcomed and the winning of a scholarship is not a prerequisite for the awarding of a bursary, although the two are often combined. Bursaries can range from 1,000 to the full amount. Scholarships and bursaries for those joining Year 8, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 13 These are less common points of entry into the schools but places may at times become available. Applications to join the schools at these points will be dealt with on an individual basis and the arrangements for scholarships and bursaries adjusted accordingly. Internal Scholarships A limited number of scholarships are available to pupils who are currently studying within the Stamford Endowed Schools. Details of the application process for these scholarships will be made available to parents at the appropriate junctures in their child s schooling. Sports Scholarships boys and girls who have not gained a sports scholarship on entry in Year 7 or 8, may reapply for a sports scholarship on moving into Year 9. This is in recognition of the significant changes in sporting ability that take place over this period as pupils mature and are exposed to committed games coaching. An internal sports scholarship gained in Year 9 will be honorary and will not attract any financial benefit. Additional Information and Policies To contact the School: W M Phelan, The Principal, Stamford Endowed Schools, Brazenose House, St Paul s Street, Stamford, Lincs, PE9 2BE. To contact the Chairman of Governors: Dr M. Dronfield, at the address above. The following information is available to parents of current and prospective pupils from the School offices and is also available on sesinsight.co.uk particulars of the Schools policy on and arrangements for admissions; policy on discipline and exclusions; particulars of education and welfare provision for pupils with statements of special educational needs and English as an additional language; particulars of the curriculum policy under Regulation 1.(2); particulars of the welfare, health and safety, anti-bullying and school visits policy under Regulation 3.(2); particulars of academic performance during the preceding year, including the results of public examinations; details of the complaints procedure and the number of complaints registered under the formal procedure during the preceding school year; the number of staff, including temporary staff, and their qualifications. The Schools policy to safeguard and promote the welfare of children who are pupils at the Schools is published in full on the Schools website. Sixth Form Scholarships during the autumn term of Year 11 boys and girls may apply for scholarships in academics, music, sport, art and as an all-rounder as they move through into the Sixth Form. The internal scholarship exams and assessments will take place in early November during Scholarship Week. Art, Drama and All-rounder Scholarships are also available to pupils in Year 8 moving into Year 9.
