2 With all the noise out there and a zillion of options online even seasoned designers are overwhelmed with choices, especially when it comes to picking and placing art and lighting. I just spent a couple of days comparing different LED lights for a project. Oh, my! Most people go through the first step when they buy lighting and accents. Well, it's a must if you want to be comfortable - and somewhat social. But there is another piece to the decorating puzzle. It's one that most people forget. And it is this: It is easier to learn how to get pictures and lighting right first time than playing a guessing game wasting your weekends by patching the walls.. So, before you step on the ladder and start googling read this GUIDE. Or else... "how high to hang chandelier" Your walls and ceiling will look like a war zone with countless bullet-size holes. Your kid's friend will bump his head on a light fixture and you will get a nasty call. Your home will look out of balance after all. (oh. no!!!) 1

4 1 How to Hang Art & Pictures Art is what inspires you! It can be your favorite quote or writing, a collection of family pictures, wall plates, trays or your kids' school art. It's all about putting it together into a beautiful gallery. Tip: For art or picture grouping, make a paper template of each picture by tracing around the outside of the frame. Cut out the shape, and label it. Be sure to draw a directional arrow (vertical or horizontal). 3

5 Hanging Art on a Large Wall Select pictures, photos or art which has at least one common element, such as color, frames, object or style. Arrange pictures or art around a furniture piece. Mark the center of the wall. Mark the center of the main picture Align the center of the wall with the center of the picture. Make cut-outs of paper by tracing each picture. Attach paper to the wall with removable tape. Hang them side by side leaving 2-3 inches in between. 4

6 Creating a Gallery over a Sofa Use the largest vertical art piece to the side. Center second large art piece and hang it 6-8 inches above the sofa. Hang smaller ones around it. Make sure that all of the pictures have at least one common element. It can be color, style or frames. Introduce unexpected elements, such as mirrors or 3d crafts. 5

7 Creating a Faux Gallery Get creative! If you do not want to display a valuable collection on the wall, make photos of the objects you love. It can be everyday objects, such as plates, cups, lipsticks...there is no limit! Again, the grouping should be united by color, shape or style. Avoid any other art pieces on the walls in the room. Don't be concerned if the bottom of the art piece hangs low. Note: Coordinate the colors of the art piece with furniture or accessories. 6

8 Placing Art on the Shelves Use sculptural accessories for the wall unit or shelves. Choose vases and accessories that are at a minimum 2-3 inches lower than the shelf. Pick objects that have one element in common. It can be color, style or materials.. Note: The color of the back wall will play against the color of the accessories. For example, if the accents are a dark color and so is the back wall, they will not stand out. 7

9 Hanging Art on the Staircase Wall. Place a large picture or art piece in the most visible spot from downstairs. Place 3-4 of your favorite photos or art in similar frames and align them with the main picture. Your gallery should have at least one common element, such as color or style. Note: Use cut out paper before hanging the art. 8

10 Pictures above the Arched Furniture Align the arched shape of the furniture with the pictures. Use ribbons, chains and decorative medallions for a unique look. Choose identical frames and hardware. Keep composition within the same theme. Avoid large art pieces. 9

11 Hanging Art above a Bed If you like order and simplicity, hang two identical pictures 10 inches above a bed. Make sure that the grouping is centered to the center of the headboard. 10

12 Creating a Gallery above a Bed. Place a single large picture centered around the headboard. Hang a smaller picture and align one side with the larger picture. You can put other pictures or art around the first grouping. Make sure that the second grouping does not compete with the first one in color. Don't worry about the symmetry. By leaving some part of the wall out, you will create interesting negative space. Avoid using too many colors for a complex grouping. Repeat the colors through furniture, art, accessories, and textiles. 11

13 Hanging a Large Art Piece above a Bed Go for a single large art piece above a bed hanging it 8-10 inches over the headboard. Make sure that it is large enough in the relationship to the headboard. 12

14 2 How to Hang Lighting Here are a few tips before we dive in: There is nothing more important in your home than lighting! Designers know it and create what is called "layers of lighting". This means several sources of light, such as recessed lighting, table lamps, wall lights and floor lamps. This creates beautiful patterns of dark and light in the room. Use dimmers for all your lighting to save money and create a different mood. Make sure that you always hire a licensed electrician for safety and permits. 13

15 Hanging Entryway Lighting Hang a lighting fixture 7 feet minimum off the floor and to the bottom of the light fixture in the hallway or the foyer. 14

16 Hanging Light in the Middle of a Living Room Hang a lighting fixture 7 feet minimum off the floor and to the bottom of the light fixture in the living room. This way if you want to move the furniture around you don't need to worry about it being too low. 15

17 Hanging Two-Story Foyer Light For a two-story foyer hang the light at the midpoint between the floor and the ceiling. The bottom of the light should be on the same level with the upper-level flooring. But If you want a chandelier to show from the outside, center it to the window. 16

18 Placing the Bathroom Light For the best light in the bathroom install vertical sconces on the two sides of the mirror at 60 inches off the floor or at your eye level depending on your height. You can add another lighting fixture in the center of the bathroom at a minimum of 7 feet off the floor. Note: Make sure that you don't install a lighting fixture right over the mirror with the light directed down. If you do that, it will create strong shadows making the reflection unflattering. 17

19 Hanging the Light Above a Bed -you should be able to sit on bed without touching the light. Hang the lighting fixture 4 1/2-5 feet from the bed top to the bottom of the chandelier. 18
