1 COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT for HEAVY CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT This document contains a list of courses, descriptions and associated competencies in the first year of the Heavy Construction Equipment Technology: Operator Emphasis (HY) program, the Heavy Construction Equipment Technology: Technician Emphasis (HE) program and the Heavy Construction Equipment Technology: Caterpillar Emphasis (CH) program. 2 HEO100 Tools, Hardware and Basic Safety Introduction to the tools, fasteners, and fittings used in heavy construction equipment. Topics cover safety, practices in using appropriate tools and hardware, and procedures for preventing equipment failures through daily equipment reports. 2 Credits (2 Lecture- 0 Lab) a. Identify proper shop safety procedures b. Identify the proper use of hand tools c. Identify the proper use of portable and stationary shop tools d. Identify the proper use of construction site tools e. Identify various types of torque wrenches f. Demonstrate the proper use of a digital multi-meter g. Demonstrate the proper use of precision measuring tools h. Demonstrate the safe use of oxygen/acetylene torches i. Demonstrate the ability to identify hardware j. Understand the principles of lubrication k. Identify types of seals, o-rings, gasket and bearings l. Complete the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Training m. Demonstrate the ability to complete an operator s daily equipment report 2
3 DSM119 Fuel Systems Basic introduction to the theory and operation of mechanical and electronic fuel injection systems as they apply to the heavy-duty diesel engine field, with a focus on operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, and safety. 2 Credits (2 Lecture - 0 Lab) a. Describe safety procedures to be used when working on fuel injection systems. b. Describe the function and operation of the components of mechanical and electronic fuel injection systems. c. Describe the procedures for servicing and maintaining mechanical and electronic fuel injection systems. d. Describe the correct procedures for troubleshooting mechanical and electronic fuel injection systems. DSM141 Heavy Duty Brake Systems Explanation and theory of brake systems common to heavy duty vehicles and equipment. Selected topics include air, hydraulic, and anti-lock systems with emphasis on troubleshooting and practical applications of repair and maintenance. 2 Credits (2 Lecture - 0 Lab) Corequisite(s): DSM142 or DSM155. a. Explain how to adjust operating air pressure to manufacturer s specifications b. Understand the process of tracing for air and hydraulic leaks. c. Name the required steps to check air delivery pressure. d. Identify brake cams for wear. e. Measure brake lining thickness. f. Define the steps necessary to measure brake drum or rotor tolerances. g. Discuss the removal and inspection of wheel bearings h. Explain the process of installing brake drums and rotors. i. Explain the required steps to lubricate and install wheel bearings and seals j. Explain wheel bearing adjustment k. Recognize components of ABS systems l. Discuss the troubleshooting steps to take for a malfunctioning ABS system. 3
4 HEO111 Diesel Engine Fundamentals and Maintenance Explanation and theory of diesel engines commonly found in heavy-duty trucks and equipment. Topics include component terminology and identification, manufacturers engine nomenclature, system identification, and basic procedures needed to service and maintain diesel engines. 3 credits (2 Lecture-3 Lab). Co-requisite: HEO100 a. Identify proper safety procedures used around a diesel engine b. Correctly identify the appropriate shop equipment and hand tools used on and around a diesel engine c. Explain the operating principles of diesel engines d. Identify the various components of a diesel engine e. Identify the various systems used on a diesel engine f. Demonstrate the proper procedures for servicing the lubrication system and related components g. List the correct procedures in servicing the air induction and exhaust systems h. Demonstrate the proper procedures used to service the cooling system and related components i. Identify the various engine belt systems, adjustment procedures and inspections j. Name the proper procedures used to service and maintain the fuel system k. Utilize correct engine manufacturers manuals to list maintenance intervals and diagnose simple engine malfunctions l. List the types of starting aids used with a diesel engine m. List the correct ways to start a diesel engine in diverse ambient temperatures 4
5 HEO152 Powertrain and Related Systems Theory, components, operation, troubleshooting, adjustment, and preventative maintenance of construction equipment powertrains. Topics include engine clutches, standard transmissions, drivelines, differentials, track steering systems, final drives, braking systems, undercarriage, and tires. Components relating to the written and pre-trip inspection for CDL test. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): HEO100. a. Demonstrate safe practices related to performing routine maintenance adjustments b. Explain the working components of various equipment clutch designs and their adjustment c. Identify the components of a standard heavy-duty transmission d. Identify various drivelines by design and their proper daily maintenance procedures e. Identify the components of a differential and the application of various limited-slip designs f. Explain the working components and adjust the various track-type steering systems g. Properly check various final drive fluid levels h. Identify the components and properly adjust hydraulic and air brake systems i. Describe the relationship between undercarriage components, proper adjustment and alignment procedures j. Demonstrate the safe procedure for properly checking and inflating heavy-duty tires k. Demonstrate the safe procedure for properly changing hubcentered, stud-centered and spoke type tire/wheel assemblies l. Perform a pre-start/pre-trip inspection checklist 5
