John 8:31-32 sermon by Pastor Jason Wakefield

JOHN 8:31-32 Identifying Lies Getting at a believed lie is difficult we resist truth Understand the Origin of Lies Lies have one origin come from one father Incarnational Truth Confronting the lie with Incarnational Truth is how we are set free Dependence on Incarnational Truth Daily depending on the Truth to set us free
Unlovable
POINT 1: IDENTIFY THE LIE(S) Face Exercise Face our face Facing our believed lies is not easy John 8:31 (Jews who had believed in him) John 8:59 (they picked up stones to throw at him). Example: I am what I accomplish ~ Ring of truth to it seems like wise advice ~ Someone you love spoke it over you with good intentions ~ It may have worked for you given you success Other examples: I am stupid I am annoying I am what others think of me
POINT 2: UNDERSTAND THE ORIGIN OF THESE LIES The father of lies has lied since the beginning the fall Genesis 3. He lies to cause us to miss the mark with our core longings His lies have not changed because they work
6 CORE LONGINGS Love Communion with God Belonging to God; to God s people Safety Relationship with God is secure Significance God made us unique individuals Purpose God has a purpose for us Understanding We are understood by God and we can (with limitations) understand him and one another
LIES THAT MISS THE MARK Idolatry and sexual activity are substituted for love Shallow relationships masquerade as a belonging community Possessions and wealth are thought to bring safety Position and power determine significance Personal performance is linked with self-worth and purpose Intellectual insights are thought to produce understanding
POINT 3: INCARNATIONAL TRUTH Truth is a person to be known, it is understood in a work and spoken in a message. The person is Jesus, the work is the cross, the message is the gospel. If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:31-32 ESV) Person to be known My disciples Personal relationship, communion with Christ Work to be lived If you abide Cross-centered life, serving others, social justice etc. Message to be spoken In my word Doctrinal Precision, Apologetics, Worldview
POINT 4: DEPENDENCE ON TRUTH - 4 MAIN LIES Robert McGee in Search for Significance writes about 4 main lies or false beliefs. I must meet certain standards in order to feel good about myself The performance trap I must be approved by others to feel good about myself The approval addiction Those who fail are unworthy of love and deserve punishment The blame game I am what I am, I cannot change, I am hopeless The shame trap
THE PERFORMANCE TRAP I must meet certain standards in order to feel good about myself He calls this, the performance trap and states that it leads to such things as the fear of failure, perfectionism, driven-ness, manipulation and avoidance.
TRUTH FOR THE PERFORMANCE TRAP What is the TRUTH and how do we daily depend upon the TRUTH to set us free? TRUTH Person: Know (gnosis) the Justifier Work: Live life in light of being justified exchanging reviling for grace Message: Understanding the Biblical position/doctrine
DAILY DEPENDENCE FOR THE PERFORMANCE TRAP Truth set s us free through: Pray/Read/Serve/Tell Pray: For and to develop a closer relationship with Christ Read: Study and Meditation to know and understand Serve: Living a life of faith and action Tell: The gospel proclaimed through words and action
DAILY DEPENDENCE FOR THE PERFORMANCE TRAP Pray: Father, awaken my mind and spirit to the truth that because of Christ I am justified and my sins are no longer held against me and more than that, I am your beloved child that you delight in. Read: Study and Meditate Theologians and Contemplatives Study: God s answer is the doctrine of justification. In a great exchange Jesus took our sin upon himself bearing it s shame and consequences and in return gave us his righteousness; his life of perfect obedience. Meditate: 2 Cor. 5:21 and Romans 5:1. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1 ESV)
DAILY DEPENDENCE FOR THE PERFORMANCE TRAP Serve: Living a justified life means to actively pursue giving grace to others. Grace Giving them what they do not deserve Tell: Living this way creates opportunities to tell others about being justified by God. ~ This is living in the freedom of the Truth!
THE APPROVAL ADDICTION I must be approved by others to feel good about myself He calls this the approval addiction and says that it leads to trying to please others at any cost, fear of rejection, being overly sensitive, defensive and withdrawing from people.
TRUTH FOR THE APPROVAL ADDICTION TRUTH: Person: Know (gnosis) the Reconciler Work: Live life in light of being reconciled work towards reconciliation in your relationships and in others. Message: Understanding the Biblical position
TRUTH FOR THE APPROVAL ADDICTION Pray/Read/Serve/Tell Pray: Father, awaken my mind and spirit to the truth that because of Christ I am reconciled with you! The distance my sins created has been bridged, I was once far but now have been brought near by the blood of Jesus Read: Study and Meditate Theologians and Contemplatives Study - God s answer is the doctrine of reconciliation. This doctrine says that I was once hostile and alienated from God because of my sin. But through Jesus I am now forgiven and brought into a relationship with him. I am approved of, loved, received and reconciled through Jesus. Meditate - Col. 1:21-22 and Eph. 2:1-6 Serve: Living a life of Reconciliation Peacemaking; Restoring broken and or damaged relationships Tell: Others about the reconciling Christ

THE BLAME GAME Those who fail are unworthy of love and deserve punishment This is labeled as the blame game and causes people to live in fear of punishment, blaming others for personal failures, running from God and people, avoiding new opportunities and inflicting self-punishment.
TRUTH FOR THE BLAME GAME TRUTH Person: Know (gnosis) the one who satisfied God Work: Live life in light of being free from guilt and condemnation work in relating to others without guilt, manipulation and condemnation. Message: Understanding the Biblical position
TRUTH FOR THE BLAME GAME Pray/Read/Serve/Tell Pray: Father, awaken my mind and spirit to the truth that because of Christ s sacrifice on the cross your just wrath is satisfied and the laws demands for the punishment of humanities (my) sin is also satisfied! Read: Study/Meditation to know and understand Study: God s answer is the doctrine of propitiation. The word propitiation means satisfied. This Christian teaching says that God was completely satisfied with the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Upon Jesus was poured the just wrath of God satisfying God s holy response towards our sin. Meditate: Isaiah 53:10-11 and 1 John 4:9-11.
TRUTH FOR THE BLAME GAME Serve: Living a life of mercy and forgiveness. Choosing not to hold anger, guilt and punishment over the head of others and choosing to forgive and show mercy. Mercy Not giving them what they do deserve Tell: Living this way creates opportunities to tell others about Jesus who satisfied the laws demands!
THE SHAME TRAP I am what I am, I cannot change, I am hopeless He calls this the shame trap which brings feelings of shame, hopelessness, inferiority, passivity, loss of creativity, withdrawal from relationships and pretense of many kinds. The answer is the doctrine of regeneration. We have been born again our old identity and old name of shame is gone and our new identity and new name has come. We are a new creation in Jesus Christ. John 3:3-6 and 2 Cor. 5:17.
TRUTH FOR THE SHAME TRAP Person: Know the Regenerator! Work: Live life in light of being free past failures and sin you are born again and have new identity express this freedom to others. Message: Understanding the Biblical position Pray/Read/Serve/Tell Pray: For and to develop a closer relationship with Christ Read: Study/Meditation to know and understand Serve: living a life of faith and action Tell: the gospel through words action
