1 The Teacher s Toolkit This allows teachers and trainers to: set up new users and user groups specify which Read&Write 10 Gold features a particular student, or group of students, has access to set up and assign prediction lists add dictionary definitions specify how you want certain words pronounced by the system view and clear student spelling logs view and clear student activity logs import users from either the Active Directory or a CSV file. The Teacher s Toolkit must be installed on at least one machine when installing in Managed User mode. Managed User Setup If you want to manage users using the Teachers Toolkit you should choose the Managed Users option. Both a shared Administration folder and a shared Users folder on the network are required for this type of installation. The Managed User set up is chosen for both user and teacher deployments. The Install Teachers Toolkit option should only be selected for teacher machine deployments. Unmanaged User Setup If you do not want users to be managed by the Teacher s Toolkit you can choose this option. A shared Administration folder is required but the user data is simply stored in the user s Windows profile. Administration (Admin folder) This is the folder that contains administration files and is referred to as the Admin folder. This folder should be on the network, and should be accessible using the same path from all workstations, whether logged in as an administrator or a user. When the program starts, it checks in this folder to see which features have been enabled or disabled by the teacher. The benefit of this folder is that from one central location, you can globally enable and disable features for all users, rather than having to visit individual computers. This folder is also necessary for storing the type of license that has been purchased and activated by the site. This includes unlimited and concurrent seat type licenses. Users folder This is the folder which contains the data files and settings for all of the Read&Write 10 Gold users on the network. The users should have full access to this folder and its subfolders, and its contents must be fully writable. This folder can be a hidden folder if you have concerns about users deleting files. The Users folder contains a sub folder for each user. Users can be added and deleted easily

2 using the Teacher s Toolkit. (If the selected Users folder is on a mapped drive, please make sure that this is available to all users.) Enterprise System Requirements Before you can install Read&Write Gold Enterprise, you must ensure that you have the minimum system requirements on the network storage device and client PC. Server 2 GB disk space free on the network storage device. Client Internet Explorer (Version 7 or above) Pentium GHz Processor (Recommended: Pentium 4 2.4GHz or greater) 512 MB RAM (Recommended: 1 GB RAM or greater) DVD Player (for Install purposes only) Windows XP SP3 or above (UAC must be enabled on client machines with Windows 7 or Vista) - Enterprise should work well on a 100Mb network. - There will be a slower load time than a natively installed application. This is because the application is being streamed to the desktop. - You must have a network point available for every user's PC. - There is no limit to the amount of concurrent users who can run Read&Write 10 Gold. However, the majority of the application is streamed on initial load, so the load time will be affected by the number of simultaneous startups and not by the number of concurrent users. - To help speed up load time, some parts of the application are streamed on demand. This means they are only loaded if they are used. Again, these components may be affected by the number of simultaneous loads and not by the number of concurrent users. - Once the application is loaded, it is memory resident, so the application will no longer stream data across the network until a stream on demand feature is accessed by the user. - Application load time may be reduced by installing Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5 SP1 on the client machines. Local Installation System Requirements You can install Read&Write 10 Gold on a client machine for an individual user or for several managed/unmanaged users. Before you can install Read&Write 10 Gold (MSI), you must ensure that the computer has: Internet Explorer (Version 7 or above) Pentium 4 1.8GHz Processor (Recommended: Pentium 4 2.4GHz or greater)

3 512 MB RAM (Recommended: 1 GB RAM or greater) 2 GB free disk space DVD Player (for install purposes only) Windows XP SP3 or above. MSI Admin Tool The MSI Admin Tool is a utility which allows you to pre-configure your Read&Write installation package prior to installation. The tool is primarily designed to be used in deployment scenarios were the Read&Write installation is running in a silent or unattended fashion. Common deployment methods where this tool may be useful include Group Policy software deployment; automated application deployment via SMS Server, Microsoft System Essentials or any means of installation were the user interface has been reduced or removed using windows installer switches i.e. msiexec setup.msi /qb. For scenarios where the installation is not being managed by an MSI deployment method the tool offers the ability to run the installation under a predefined set of user credentials giving restricted users the ability to install the software manually on their own work stations. Site Utilities This includes the following utilities and guides and can be installed from the Read&Write 10 DVD- Fact Mapper Image Uploader User Guide MSI Admin Tool User Guide Principal User Settings User Guide Remote User Access Code User Guide Citrix Support Virtual Desktops running on Xen Server The client machines hardware is use by the virtual PC so the client needs a soundcard installed. Xen Desktop (Citrix Metaframe) The type of audio we use can be played by Citrix in two ways. It can be played by the sound card on the server and sent to the client machine as a compressed audio stream, or the request for audio can be redirected to the client using a process known as Hooking and played on the client s sound card. Due to the lack of sound cards in most high end servers the audio is usually re-directed to the client machine. Legacy Audio must be enabled on the Citrix Server to achieve this. XenApp 1. Hosted Apps Read&Write can only interact with other Hosted Apps not locally installed Apps. Read&Write is installed on the Citrix server and hosted via the Management Console.

4 2. Streamed Apps Read&Write is captured using Streaming Profiler. Read&Write published in this way can interact with locally installed apps, however local apps cannot interact with streamed apps. RM Install instructions for Read&Write 10 Enterprise Using the steps below you can install and run Read&Write Enterprise in a "Standard Security Restrictions" environment. Note! If client machines are running Windows Vista, the required Microsoft Update.Net 3.5 SP1 must be installed. 1. Create a folder on a Network share to Install Read&Write Enterprise into for example "Read And Write Enterprise" located on a Network share called "\\server1\everyone\rw" The full UNC path to this folder would then be \\server1\everyone\rw\read And Write Enterprise 2. Create a new "Path Rule" to allow unrestricted Access to this folder in MS Group Policy. (This can also be done via the RM management console) 3. Create an Admin and User folder on the Network Share. The UNC paths to these folders being "\\server1\everyone\rw\read And Write Admin Settings" and "\\server1\everyone\rw\read And Write User Settings". Set the security to Allow Read\Write Access on both these folders for "All Users". 4. As an Admin User run the autorun.exe from the Read&Write installation DVD. Choose to install Read&Write Enterprise. When asked for the path to install Read&Write Enterprise enter the folder created in step 1. \\server1\everyone\rw\read And Write Enterprise. 5. Create a new File HASH Rule for VirtDotNet.exe, VirtualPDFViewer.exe and rw_player.exe. These files are located in the Tools\Stubs for RM Hash Rule folder in the location where you installed Read&Write Enterprise. Set the Hash Rules to unrestricted. Hash rules can be added via MS Group Policy or the RM management console. 6. Note: If the client machines that will be running Read&Write Enterprise have Microsoft.Net Version 2 and 3.5 SP1 installed then you do not need to add the HASH rule for VirtDotNet.exe 7. Note: The Hash rule for VirtualPDFViewer.exe is required to run PDFAloud. The Hash rule for VirtualPDFViewer.exe is therefore only required if you wish to use this feature. 8. Once Read&Write Enterprise is copied to this folder, run the Read&Write 10.exe and go through the setup Steps. Choosing to install In Managed Mode. When asked to enter the Admin and Users path, again enter the UNC paths to the folders created in steps 3. Once setup is complete you should get a message from Read&Write stating that you should now run the Teachers Toolkit in order to setup users. 9. Run the Teachers Toolkit as an Admin User and turn on "Allow Autocreation of user accounts for user with a valid Windows Login" from the "Import Users" tab. (This is the preferred way of creating user accounts, manually adding in the users will also work).

5 10. Once this is done click on Save and Exit to close the Teachers Toolkit and run Read&Write 10.exe. Activate the software when prompted. Read&Write will then start, close it down when the toolbar is launched. 11. When the software runs successfully for the Administrator, right click on the "Read And Write Enterprise" folder, (where Read&Write is installed to) and edit the security permissions on the folder to prevent restricted users from copying in and running any other applications other than ones installed by Read&Write. Choose not to inherit permissions from the parent folder and not to copy permissions from the parent folder. In this way you can set unique permissions for the Read And Write Enterprise folder. Give Admin Users "Full Control" to the folder and Student Users "Read", "Read And Execute" and "List folder Contents" permissions. Set these permissions to inherit to This folder, subfolders and files under Read And Write Enterprise. This is to ensure that the files in the Read&Write folder also receive these permissions. 12. Run Read&Write 10.exe again as an Admin User to check everything works. 13. Log into a machine as a "Student User" where "Standard Security Restrictions" apply and browse to "\\server1\everyone\rw\read And Write Enterprise" and run Read&Write 10.exe. Check it works as this type of user. Novell Support You may encounter issues when activating Read&Write the first time it is run due to permissions applied to the Admin folder.
