1 CAMP #4 MODEL DESIGNER 101 Insert Date here $ price here Insert times Ages 7+ How do LEGO brick model-designers come up with their ideas? Where do they begin, and how do the ideas go from concept to completion? This camp will explore the creative process of model design. Campers will learn the function of different LEGO components and discover how those components can work together to create all kinds of solid structures and moving parts. At the completion of the camp, each child will have the opportunity to present his or her own design. *All Campers take home a custom mini-figure at the end of the week. 5

2 Model Designer Camp Schedule (note: uses basic brick kit & project kit #1) Day 1 9:00 9:30 Arrival/Instructions/Free play Optional: Allow children to build a mini-figure 9:30 9:50 Divide campers into teams of 2 to share kits (in this camp, allow 1 project kit for every 2 campers. This allows the pair to have more gears and technic bricks to create their models Go over pieces in Project Kit #1, names and what they are used for 9:50 10:15 Teach Lesson #1 and build Swing o Rama Model (do not take apart, set aside) 10:45-11:00 Experiment with Swing o rama (see: IDEAS TO CHANGE IT UP! Be a Model Designer) 11:30-11:45 Build Pyramid model, use extra pieces to build a bigger pyramid! Challenge: Can you make a sphere using square bricks? 11:50 12:00 Clean up 11:40 12:00 Campers present models to parents/hand out certificates/dismissal/ Take Mini-Fig home *Use remote controls in this camp if available! 6

3 Model Designer Camp Each Day teams of 2 will work together and build 3 Bricks 4 Kidz models, one from the Basic Brick Kit, one from Project Kit #1 and one of their very own. There will be a mini-lesson each day, ranging from building sturdy structures, learning about the different technic pieces to understanding gears. After the children build the Bricks 4 Kidz model, they will be challenged to modify it to make it their own. In addition, each day, they will have the opportunity to start from scratch to create their own masterpiece. Please note that for this camp, it is best if only 2 students work out of 1 project kit. For example, if there are 12 students in the camp, have 6 project kits #1 and 6 Basic Brick Kits. The pair will use these kits throughout the week. 1. Day #1: GEAR SPEED Model: Swing o Rama Why does the Swing o Rama model turn so slow? If you connect two gears together and the first one (driver) has more teeth than the second one (generally that means it's a bigger-sized wheel), the second one (follower) has to turn much faster to keep up. So this arrangement means the second wheel turns faster than the first one 2. Day #2: GEAR DIRECTION Model: Paper Crinkler 3. Day #3: GEAR RATIO Why won t the paper go in the top and bottom gears from the same side? When two gears mesh together, the second one always turns in the opposite direction. So if the first one turns clockwise, the second one must turn counterclockwise. Experiment and reinforce gear speed lesson from day before: Experiment with the speed by moving and attaching the motors to the 3 different size gears Before moving, guess if it will be faster or slower when you move it to a bigger or smaller gear and why. Model: Cyclone: A crown gear helps change motion through 90 degrees. Model: Windmill What is the gear ratio of the gears in the windmill? What happens if you change the gear ratio? Create your own model and explain the gear ratio you chose to use and why? The most important thing to consider when putting two gears together is the gear ratio. This is a way of expressing the size of one gear relative to another. Gear Ratio can be determined by the number of teeth around the edge of each gear. A 40-tooth gear and an 8-tooth gear, the ratio would be 40:8, which when simplified is 5:1. Gears of the same size, with the same number of teeth, turn at the same speed When I turn the 8t driver time(s), the 40t follower turns time(s). This produces a gear ratio of : _. 7

4 4. Day #4: ALL ABOUT PULLEYS Unlike gears, in these pulley models both wheels turn in the same direction Model: Tornado and Tsunami Why do people use pulleys? How do pulleys work? How do you think you would build a pulley? Decreasing Pulley Speed: If you use a small pulley wheel to drive a large pulley wheel, the large one will turn slower. Increasing Pulley Speed: If you use a large pulley wheel to drive a small pulley wheel, the small one will turn faster. How did you power your pulley? What direction did the pulleys move when the belt was flat (not crossed)? What is something new that you learned about pulleys? 5. Day #5: DRIVER AND FOLLOWER Model: Mini-Golf The gear you turn (called the driver) causes the other gear (called the follower) to turn also. The driver and the follower turn in opposite directions. If you use a small gear to drive a large gear, the large one will turn slower. If you use a large gear to drive a small gear, the small one will turn faster. Which gear is the drive gear on the mini-golf model? _(8-tooth) What makes that gear the drive gear? Which gear is the follower? And why? Make your own model and be prepared to discuss which gear is the driver and which is the follower and why you chose to use those size gears. IDEAS TO CHANGE IT UP: 1. If students have a difficult time starting from scratch, let them follow the model plans for the first couple pages to use as the base of their model. They can then build onto it and make it their own 2. Add pieces to it 3. Remove pieces 4. Attach motor to a different gear, etc 5. Don t forget to give it a new name! 6. Each group presents models to the camp and discuss the design process QUESTIONS TO ASK AFTER CREATING NEW MODELS: 1. Does the model solve the problem? 2. What is the name of your model and why? 3. What does your model do? 4. What changes did you make and why? 5. What is a name for the gear or pulley combination you used? 6. Did you use gears or pulleys or both? 7. Do all of the gears or pulleys in your model turn at the same speed? 8. How many gears does your model have? 9. How many pulleys does your model have? 10. How many axles does your model have? 8

5 11. Name all the pieces in your model. 12. Is there anything you would do to make it different? 13. What sort of gearing arrangement is this? 14. Determine the gear ratio. 15.
