1 Tech Note 842 Installing Wonderware Information Server (WIS) on a Non-System Drive: 4.0 SP1 on Windows 2008 (32- and 64-bit OS) All Tech Notes, Tech Alerts and KBCD documents and software are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. See the Terms of Use for more information. Topic#: Created: March 2012 Introduction Installing WIS on a non-system drive can be necessary in certain cases. WIS has several dependencies that must be configured when installing on a drive other than the system drive. In most cases the system drive will be C. This Tech Note outlines the configuration process to ensure a correct installation. Use the links in the Reference section to view each Tech Note in this series according to its Application Version and Operating System. Application Versions Wonderware Information Server 4.0 SP1 Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (all releases) Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 (32-bit only) Microsoft Office 2007 Microsoft SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 Note: The Utility provided with this Tech Note is used to move IIS7 from one drive to another. It does not support moving IIS when SharePoint Services are installed. Installation Tasks This installation scenario requires: Ensuring IIS is installed on the Default drive. Installing WIS. Installing WIS 4.0 SP1 on an alternate drive is a multi-step process. Preparation Ensure that a compatible version of Historian is already installed and properly running. The Historian can be on the same machine, or on another network machine. Ensure that SQL Server 2008 or 2005 is configured for SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode. Moving IIS to the non-system drive. Ensure IIS is installed on the Default Drive and Then Move It to a Non-system Drive 1. Download and extract Move_IIS7.zip. 2. Run Move_IIS7.msi. 3. Click Next on the Welcome screen. 4. Type the user's name and Organization that can run this utility, and then click Next (Figure 1 below). FIGURE 1: MOVE_IIS UTILITY SETUP USER INFORMATION 5. Select the Destination folder where you want to install the Utility and click Next (Figure 2 below). 1/10

2 FIGURE 2: MOVE_IIS UTILITY SETUP DESTINATION FOLDER 6. Confirm and then click Next to Install the Utility. 7. Double-click Move_IIS7.exe and type the Target IIS Root directory. 8. Click the Move button (Figure 3 below). FIGURE 3: TECH SUPPORT IIS MOVER UTILITY Note: This utility only works with the default installation of IIS. If you have any other application like Information Server installed, the Move button is grayed out and you can t use this Utility. In this case please contact Wonderware Tech support for more details. 9. Verify that the operation was successful. At this point you have a chance to revert the changes if you like (Figure 4 below). 2/10

3 FIGURE 4: TECH SUPPORT IIS MOVER UTILITY Reverting Your Changes When you revert the changes, you can get the message that Inetpub Directory already exists (Figure 5 below). FIGURE 5: TECH SUPPORT IIS MOVER UTILITY ERROR MESSAGE The Revert operation will not complete properly when the destination directory exits. However, you might not be able to delete that directory because you are not the owner of some of the files in that directory. To Revert the changes successrully, you need to take ownership. The error message is similar to the following (Figure 6 below). FIGURE 6: ERROR ON DELETING THE INETPUB DIRECTORY To fix this issue 1. Right-click on the Problem Directory and then click the Security tab. 3/10

4 2. Click the Advanced button. 3. Click on the Owner tab and then click the Edit button. 4. Check the Replace owner on Subcontainers and object option, and then click Other users or groups button. 5. Select the current user name, and then click the Check names button (Figure 7 below). FIGURE 7: TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE INETPUB DIRECTORY (STEPS 1-5) 6. Click Apply. You might see the Windows Security message (Figure 8 below). FIGURE 8: APPLY THE NEW OWNERSHIP TO THE INETPUB DIRECTORY You might also have to change the Default permissions for the current user. To change the Default user permissions 1. Right-click on the problem directory and then click on the Security tab. 2. Click the Advanced button. 3. Click the Permissions tab and then click the Change Permissions Button (Figure 9 below). 4/10

Enable/allow Full control for current user and click the options that allow the changes to propagate to child objects (Figure 10 below). FIGURE 10: CHANGE THE PERMISSIONS FOR THE CURRENT USER 6. Make sure you can browse the following links before proceeding to the next task: Installing WIS 4.0 SP1 1. Begin installing Wonderware Information Server. During the installation steps, change the default install path to the alternate location if required. For example E:\Program Files\Wonderware\Suitevoyager. 5/10

6 FIGURE 11: INSTALLING WIS TO A DIFFERENT DRIVE 2. After the installation, launch Configurator to ensure Active Factory Language Packs are installed. See Page 45 of the Wonderware Information Server Installation Guide: If you exit the installation program without clicking Configure, required files, such as the ActiveFactory language packs, are not installed. To install ActiveFactory language packs, run the Wonderware Information Server installation program, select to modify the install, and then remove the ActiveFactory Reporting Website feature. Then run the installation program again and add the ActiveFactory Reporting Website feature. The language packs will be installed. 3. Use Configurator to configure the specific details of your installation. You can also start Configurator later by clicking the desktop icon. There are several places you can customize in the Configurator. For Historian Server you can customize the Database / data paths. 8 FIGURE 14: CUSTOMIZE THE HISTORIAN DATASOURCE NAME Known Issues Information Server Related services are not installed Due to nested directory chosen for Inetpub. Note: If you are using a nested Directory for your Inetpub directory like E:\pub\inetpub\ then Configurator fails to install the WIS related Services. You will see the following error in the Configurator when setting up the Information Server portion (Figure 11 below): 8/10

9 FIGURE 15: ERROR IN THE CONFIGURATOR WHEN SETTING UP THE INFORMATION SERVER PORTION In this case the Information Server services fail to install due to a bug in Configurator, which will be fixed in the next major release of the Information Server. The Workaround is to use the Move_IIS Utility to manually install the Services. 1. From the Actions Menu Choose Install WIS Services (Figure 16 below). FIGURE 16: MOVE_IIS UTILITY ACTION MENU 2. Verify the Information Server-related Services are properly installed and started (Figure 17 below). 9/10
