1 March is here and I hope spring will come quickly. We are all ready for it!! Although after the winter we have had, hopefully we will see a decrease in fleas and ticks, but I doubt it. They will be present as always but probably not until later this year. Here is the 411 on parasites: Fleas are external parasites that jump from one host to another. One bite from a single flea, your pet will become itchy. An overload of fleas on an animal can lead to anemia. Fleas also transmit tapeworms. Treatment: Comfortis, Trifexis, Frontline Tritak, Seresto Collars & Nexgard Ticks are another external parasite. Disease-carrying ticks pose health risks to dogs and people, no matter where you live. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Ehrlichia. In 2013, there was a 4x s increase in the number of tick borne diseases in people and pets in Western Kentucky! Treatment: Frontline Tritak, Seresto Collars & Nexgard Heartworms are internal parasites. Heartworms are carried by mosquitos and spread to dogs when bitten by the mosquitos.
2 Dogs will not show signs until late in the course of the disease. The way veterinarians test for heartworms is by a simple blood test. Only $7.00 this month Treatment: Trifexis, Heartgard, Iverhart Max or Ivomec Dilute Roundworms, Whipworms and Hookworms are internal parasite that live in the GI tract. They are transmitted by contact with the feces of infected animals or from a mother to offspring. An overload of worms can cause diarrhea, anemia and loss of body condition. Roundworms and hookworms can be spread to humans Treatment: Panacur or Drontal Tapeworms are internal parasites that live in the GI tract. They are transmitted by ingestion of a flea or ingestion of dead small animals carcasses such as mice. While no signs may be present some pets can have diarrhea, weightloss or poor body condition. Treatment: Iverhart Max, Panacur and Droncit **New Products Alert** NexGard is here and you & your pet are going to love it! NexGard is a chewable treat that your dogs will love that will prevent fleas and ticks for a month. Made by the same company that makes HeartGard & Frontline Tritak!! No messy topicals!! No pills your pet wont eat! Comes with a guaratee!! Sold only at the vet clinic!! Try it during March when it is on special!!!
3 Also new are Seresto Flea & Tick Collars Repels Ticks & Fleas! Works for 8 months guaranteed! Sold at Vet offices! Water resistant! Non-Toxic! (People and pets can even eat them without harm!) $20 off during the month of March!! Buyer Beware There are so many flea and tick preventatives on the market today that it is hard to know which ones work the best. The most important advise I can give to you is choose a product that is safe for your pet and sold by a veterinarian. Be aware that many over the counter flea and tick products are not guaranteed and contain ingredients that can make your pet very sick. Many over the counter products contain Pyrethrins which is the same chemical you spray on your yard and plants. Would you ever spray yard chemicals on your children? Of course not, so why would you ever spray them on your pets? I know what you are thinking But over the counter products are
4 so much more affordable compared to the ones sold at the vet clinics. I agree, but in this case, you truly get what you pay for!!! The products sold through the vets are safe (can you put a price on your pet s life?), they are guarantee to work usually for one month, and come with a money back guarantee. Heartworm preventatives can only be sold through Veterinary Clinics or with a presciption from a veterinarian. Heartworm disease can be completely preventable with preventative medications. However, many pet owners have taken their pets off heartworm prevention today to save money. Dogs should be tested first before they are put on preventatives. I now see more heartworm positive dogs than I use to because of the same scenario and the treatment has not been affordable. For those that want to test or treat their pets, I have huge savings for the month of March! I also promise if your dog tests negative for heartworms that we can suggest a preventative that you can afford. Flanary Vet Clinic March Specials Heartworm Specials $7 Heartworm Test (Regularly $13) $200 off Heartworm Treatment if your pet already has heartworms
