1 Bateau.com FS18 CNC kit notes 1/6 These building notes must be used in conjunction with the standard building notes included in the plans package for this boat. There are small differences between the kit and the standard plans. Differences: The kit uses stringers that fit in a notch in the transom, the stringers are slightly longer. The first layer of the clamping board is notched for the stringers. It is also notched for the transom knees. There is a very small difference in the hull shape. Since the kit uses Okoume, we take advantage of this flexibility to create a better shape. The standard plans hull shape is designed to be compatible with stiffer plywood. The side and bottom panels in the kit have a smoother curvature than the dimensions shown on the plans. The difference is very small. The frames and stringers are notched, the notches are not shown on the plans. The kit use a bow mold. That bow mold is larger than the one shown on the plans. The bow mold fits in notches in the first frame and mold. There are small differences between the nesting shown on the plans and the nesting for the kit. This is due to the thickness of the CNC router bit and to some other CNC machine requirements. Assembly: Identify all your plywood sheets. See the PDF files, we supply one PDF file per sheet plus one PDF named puzzle. Disregard the notes about open curves, those are for the CNC operator. The puzzle shows how the plywood sheets line up to assemble the long panels. There is one MDF sheet for the bow mold, mold D and mold E. The floor frames and side frames for the central frames are on a plywood sheet. The plywood frame E is on a plywood sheet: use the MDF mold on the jig and use the plywood part when building the inside of the boat. We recommend to assemble the long panels before cutting the tabs around the panels. You can assemble the long panels after separating them but it is easier to line up the long panels with the full sheets. When assembling long panels with butt blocks, keep in mind that port and starboard panels are mirror images not copies. You do not want to end up with a butt block on the outside of the hull! Assemble your stringers, transom, clamping board and long panels. The stringers are made of 2 layers. Layer 1 is in two pieces, layer 2 is made of 3 pieces. Start with the two pieces and fit the other ones on top. Transom: made from 3 layers. The inside layer has notches to receive the end of the stringers and the end of the knees. The outside layer is in one full piece. The middle layer has a small cut (5/8" deep) due to

2 Bateau.com FS18 CNC kit notes 2/6 interference with the foredeck panel. You will fill that small gap with putty. Strongbacks: The FS18 jig is assembled on a pair of strongbacks. The strongbacks are made from 2x6 or 2x8, about 15' long spaced 21" between them (24 between outside faces). You can deviate from those dimensions but keep in mind that longer or wider strongbacks may interfere with the hull sides and transom. The 21" inside spacing of the outside faces of the strongback lines up with the outside faces of the stringer. This makes bracing much easier. Jig: We show the jig with the frames sitting directly on the strongbacks but it is also possible to first put the deck down on the strong backs and set all the framing up on the deck. To assemble on the deck guarantees squareness but it is easier to brace the frames and molds directly on the strongbacks without the deck in between. Since not all builders use our strongback system, we give you the choice.

To assemble on deck makes the vertical alignement and support of the transom and bow mold easier since they sit on the deck Set up the 4 main frames and molds on the jig, use the stringers to line them up. Mold E ( motorwell bulkhead) must be installed with its stern side face at 38" from the end

4 Bateau.com FS18 CNC kit notes 4/6 of the strongback. The notches in the stringers will locate the molds lengthwise and we will check diagonals later. Install the last frame at the bow with the bow mold. The bow mold fits in notches in the two most forward frames. The lower edge of the bow mold is in the same plane than the top of the strongbacks. Unless your are assembling on the deck, you will need to support the tip of the bow mold. At this point, the whole assembly is still somewhat loose: molds are clamped to temporary braces but not fastened. We will check diagonals before fastening but after the transom assembly.

5 Bateau.com FS18 CNC kit notes 5/6 The transom layers are epoxy glued together. The inside layer has notches for the transom and for the stringers. As shown in the picture, the transom knees fit alongside the inside face of the stringers. The lower edge of the knees sits on top of the strongback (or on top of the deck if you assemble on the deck). The transom layers should be glued together but at this stage, do not epoxy glue the knees or stringers to the transom. We use them to align the transom but will remove them before fiberglassing the inside. Diagonals: All the parts of the jig are now ready for planking but unless you assembled on the deck, you must check diagonals. Measure diagonals between a corner of transom (bottom side) and a chine corner of the 2nd or 3rd frame on the opposite side. Compare to the opposite diagonal, they should match. Once your frames are square, brace all molds, secure with some temporary cleats and proceed with the planking.

6 Bateau.com FS18 CNC kit notes 6/6 Planking: From this point, the building sequence is exactly the same than in the standard building notes: tape seams outside wide fabric outside flip and remove framing fiberglass inside install inside structure. About the inside structure: the kit includes full frames, no openings. The builder will probably cut access holes in the two end frames to his preference. The kit also includes a set of pre cut floor frames and pre cut side frames (the ones above deck) for all central frames. The forward tip of the deck is rounded to clear the bow tabbing but this will probably require some fitting.
