1 ECS Major Requirements: Advising Sheet (Effective Catalog Year ) (rev: 11/01/2016) Student: Adviser: Program Objectives: Students graduating with a degree in Environmental Conservation and Sustainability: Understand the complexity of social-ecological systems and meet environmental challenges Are grounded in ecological principles and comprehend the connections between natural resource and social systems Integrate scientific information with human ethics and have the theoretical, methodological, technical and practical skills necessary to solve complex problems Work collaboratively with diverse interest groups to facilitate policy and action toward a sustainable future Are environmental citizens, sustainability advocates, and leaders for constructive change. Program Structure: (1) ECS Core Requirements. The ECS core consists of 15 courses. Some core requirements are met by taking a specific course. For other requirements, students choose one course from a list of options. The ECS core consists of basic integrative courses, a strong foundation in the natural, physical and social sciences, and essential tools and skills. (2) ECS Focus Area Requirements. Students create a 7-course Focus Area based on an Environmental Issue, Ecological System or Natural Resource of their choice. The Focus Area provides advanced study regarding specific issues of conservation and/or sustainability regarding that topic. The Focus Area is based upon at least one course in the Ecology and Natural Resources category, reflecting the interests and future direction of the student, along with a combination of courses in the Social Sciences; Tools, Skills and Natural History categories; and any additional courses from the Ecology and Natural Resources category. Focus Areas should be designed in close consultation with the adviser. Note: Courses used to fulfill Core requirements may not be used in the Focus Area, and vice versa. (3) University Requirements. Students must meet the university s requirements for credits (earning at least 128), Writing Requirement courses, and Discovery Program courses. Some of the courses required for the ECS major may also be used to meet Writing or Discovery Program requirements (see page 5, items V and VI). Program Notes: Students are expected to work closely with their advisers to ensure that they will complete the university requirements and the ECS core and focus requirements necessary for graduation. Ultimately, it is the student s responsibility to make sure all requirements have been met. All transfer students must adapt their schedules to incorporate courses as necessary. Internal transfers from other UNH majors require a 2.5 GPA for formal acceptance to the ECS major. Depending on their background, some transfer students will also need to complete Biology 412 with a C- or better. Students wishing to change their major to ECS must first meet with the Program Coordinator. If you will be studying away from UNH during your program, planning ahead is essential, as not all courses are offered each semester. Some are offered only in alternate years. Students are expected to follow the curriculum as defined. Students must submit COLSA Petitions for Academic Variance to the ECS Coordinator to request any exceptions to the ECS Curriculum. Students must achieve a grade of C- or better for all courses counted towards the Environmental Conservation and Sustainability major. No exceptions.
