1 My Home Media This document explains how to use and configure the Home Media feature of your Bell Entertainment service so you can share photos and music files from your computer to your television. Before You Begin Downloading and installing Windows Media Player Setting up media sharing Accessing photos and music on your television Manipulating photos and music on your television
2 Before You Begin Before you can set up My Home Media to access and view media from your computer on your television, you must: Have a computer connected (wired or wirelessly) to your Home Entertainment Network. For instructions, see the Online Features document at bell.ca/entertainmentsupportdocuments. Ensure that the computer meets the minimum system requirements (identified below). > Minimum system requirements: Component Required Recommended Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (SP2), In addition to the Windows XP requirements, go to Professional SP2, or Windows Update and Operating Windows XP Media install any highpriority updates that system Center Edition 2005 with KB are available for your (Update Rollup 2 for computer. Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) installed. Processor A 233-megahertz (MHz) processor, such as an Intel Pentium II or Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processor A 1.5-gigahertz (GHz) processor RAM 64 megabytes (MB) 512 MB or higher Free hard disk space 200 MB 60 gigabytes (GB) Modem 28.8 kilobits per Active broadband second (Kbps) connection Microsoft Internet Microsoft Internet Internet Explorer 6 Service Explorer 6 or browser Pack 2 or Netscape Netscape Downloading and installing Windows Media Player Windows Media is either a registered trademark or trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries. > To download Windows Media Player: 1. Type windowsmedia in the address bar of your Web browser. The Windows Media Home page appears. 2. Click the Downloads link in the left navigation bar. The Download Center page appears. > To determine your Windows operating system and whether your system meets the minimum system requirements: 1. Click the button, select All Programs, select Accessories, select System Tools, and then click the System Information application. The System Information application starts. 2. Review the right side of the System Information window to see a detailed list of the technical specifications for your computer. 3. Select the version of Windows Media Player 11 appropriate to your operating system and click the corresponding Download Now 2 BELL ENTERTAINMENT SERVICE
3 > To install Windows Media Player: 1. Open the folder where you downloaded the Windows Media Player executable (for example, wmp11- windowsxp-x86-enu.exe) to in the previous step. 2. Run the executable to install the Windows Media Player software on your computer. The Open File dialog box appears. > To set up Windows Media Player: 1. Start Windows Media Player. 2. Click the button and then click Media Sharing. The Media Sharing dialog box appears. 3. Click the Run button to start the installation wizard. The Windows Media Player Installation Wizard dialog box appears. 3. Select the Share my media check box, and then click the OK The Media Sharing dialog box expands to show all other devices on your Home Entertainment Network that can received shared media from your computer. Note: It might take a little bit of time for your Bell Entertainment console to appear in the list of devices. 4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. Setting up media sharing After you download and install Windows Media Player, you need to set up media sharing before you can share music and other digital media from your computer to your Bell Entertainment console. Note: The following steps describe how to set up media sharing in Windows Media Player From the list of other devices on your Home Entertainment Network, select Unknown Device, click the Allow button and then click the Apply Note: If you wish to modify the default media sharing settings assigned to the device, select Unknown Device from the list of devices, then click the Customize On the dialog box that appears, ensure that the settings for your Bell Entertainment console include the media types you want to stream: music or photos. Once you have the settings you want, click OK to return to the Media Sharing dialog box. 5. When you are finished, click the OK button to save your changes and enable media sharing with your Bell Entertainment console or click the Cancel button to discard your changes. 4 > To share media files in folders other than the default: If you have media files in directories other than your My Documents personal folders (My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos folders) that you wish to share, you will need to configure Windows Media Player to access the other folders. 1. Start Windows Media Player. 2. Click the button and then click More Options. The Options dialog box appears. 6. Click the Add The Add Folder dialog box appears. 7. Browse to the folder containing the music or photo files you wish to share and then click the OK 3. If it isn t already selected, click the Library tab. 4. Click the Monitor Folders The Add To Library dialog box appears. 5. Click the Advanced Options The Add To Library dialog box expands to show additional settings. The contents of that folder will now be shared in addition to the media files contained in your My Documents folders. 8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to add any additional folders until you have added all of the folders you wish to share. 9. If you want to change the properties for any of the monitored folders (the default My Documents folders or any that you add), you can also do the following: To stop monitoring a folder that you previously added, click the folder that you want to remove from the list, and then click the Remove To stop monitoring a folder that has been automatically added, click the folder, and then click the Ignore To specify whether Windows Media Player should add files previously deleted from the library, select or clear the Add files previously deleted from library check box. To prevent files that are smaller than a certain size from being added to the library, enter the file size limits in the Audio files and Video files boxes. 10. When you are finished, click the OK Windows Media Player will automatically start searching for supported music and photos on your computer in all the Personal Folders and folders you have added and automatically add them to the shared library. 4 BELL ENTERTAINMENT SERVICE
5 Accessing photos and music on your television After a brief network search, the Photos and Music screen appears. Note: Before you can share media from your computer to your television, you must first set up Windows Media Player and configure media sharing. See the instructions on the previous pages. > To access media files on a computer connected to your Home Entertainment network: 1. Press the button on the remote control. The Menu screen appears. The screen lists the computers in your house that have My Home Media sharing enabled. Note: If you have computers on your home network containing media you would like to access but My Home Media sharing is not enabled on those computers, you will not see them in this list. If you do not have any computers on your network with My Home Media sharing enabled, an information screen will appear, providing you with additional help. 4. buttons to select the computer containing the shared media you wish to access and then press the button to access the shared files. 6 > To play music on your television: 1. The selected media begins to play and the following screen appears displaying metadata information for your selection. Select the computer containing the music files you wish to access. As you highlight the name of a photo, a thumbnail image of the selected photo is displayed on the screen. 2. and buttons to find the photo or playlist you want to view. 3. Once you have finished making your photo selection. press the 4. button to return to the media menu. To view the highlighted photo in full-screen, press the 4. and buttons to find the song or playlist you want to listen to while you view your photo selection. Note: If you want to clear your selection and slideshow completely and return to Live TV, press the M Y H O M E M E D I A 7
8 Manipulating photos and music on your television playback controls on the remote control to manipulate photos and music files on your television. Depending on whether you are accessing individual files or playing all files within a directory, the controls will behave differently. Return to live TV. > Supported media file types: You can share nearly any digital media file in your Player library, excluding protected Windows Media files that you have downloaded from online stores and music files such as Advanced Audio Coding (.acc) and (.ac3) files. Files that can be shared include: Music files such as Windows Media Audio (.wma), MP3 (.mp3), and WAV (.wav) files. Note that audio CDs that are inserted into your computer can't be shared. Picture files, such as JPEG (.jpeg,.jpg) Playlists, such as Windows Media playlist (.wpl) and MP3 playlist (.m3u) files. 8 BELL ENTERTAINMENT SERVICE
