1 PLAN REVIEW GUIDE FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS PROJECT NAME: PERMIT PROJECT ADDRESS: CONTACT PERSON: CONTRACTOR PHONE Fire sprinkler system installation information shall be provided on the appropriate plans. Plans are not required to be submitted for system additions or alterations involving less than 20 sprinkler heads, 40 feet of pipe, or 40 fittings; and the alteration or addition to the system; or the occupancy use does not change the hydraulic demand or density calculation requirements. All such work shall be performed by a contractor licensed by the State to do such work and who holds a current valid permit from the Fire Department to work within the City of Tolleson. The following items shall be included on the plans: Type of system to be installed High piled, in-rack or bin storage inside building Storage of flammable or combustible liquids Dispensing, use or mixing of flammable or combustible materials within building Storage of hazardous materials inside building Dispensing, use or mixing of hazardous materials within building F ire department general notes to the contractor are provided on the plans Plans shall be drawn to an indicated scale, on sheets of uniform size, with a plan of each floor, and shall show those items from the following list that pertain to the design of the system: Name of owner and occupant.

2 Name and address of contractor. Location, including correct street address. Point of compass. Full height cross section. Ceiling construction. Fire wall locations. Partition wall locations. Fire Door Locations Unprotected window openings Large unprotected floor openings. Location and dimensions of: 1. Concealed spaces 2. Bathrooms 3. Attics 4. Closets Any small enclosures in which no sprinklers are to be installed A legend list with descriptions Detail of connection to the underground fire line Shape of design area A sprinkler head table listing the manufacturer, model, orifice size, temperature rating and protection area for each head type and the number of heads per riser per floor. Detail of connection to the underground fire line. The following in a DESIGN CRITERIA box: 1. Hazard class 2. Design density

3 3. Design Area (sq. ft.) 4. Number of sprinklers in design area 5. Water supply data: a. Test date and location b. Flow PSI and GPM c. Residual PSI d. Static PSI e. Hose stream and in-rack sprinkler water allowance 6. System demand: a. PSI at riser b. GPM at riser Pipe type and schedule of wall thickness. Type and location of hangers, sleeves, braces, and methods of securing sprinklers. City main size and system elevation relative to flow test hydrant. The Building Code occupancy class of each area or room in the building are indicated on the drawings. Sprinkler heads are positioned no closer than 4 inches to any wall. The clear space below sprinklers is in accordance with NFPA 13. The placement, location and contents of the spare sprinkler head cabinet is indicated on the drawing. The type and locations of all control valves, check valves, main and auxiliary drains are indicated and identified on the drawings. The location and size of the inspectors test valve is indicated on the drawings. The maximum floor area on any single floor served by an individual riser does not exceed NFPA 13 ALLOWANCE. The location and type of local water flow alarm is indicated on the drawings. Cut sheet literature describing all systems components is included as attachments or component manufacturer, make and model data is included on the drawings when the components are listed in the

Sprinkler system installation under exterior combustible roofs or canopies exceeding four feet in width, attached to the building is indicated on the drawings. Sprinkler head installation under ducts (more than 4 feet in width) is indicated on the drawings. Third party monitoring of water flow is provided for systems with 20 or more sprinkler heads (Group 1 Division 1) or 100 or more sprinkler heads in other occupancies. Fire hose valves and stations (when required or provided) are spaced so that all protected areas are within 30 feet of a nozzle when attached to not more than 100 feet of hose. Fire hose valves shall be two 2½ inch male connections (NST) with a gate valve. No hose shall be attached. A detail of the hydraulic data nameplate is included on the drawings. Stamped or engraved metal or rigid plastic plates are required. Calculations for hydraulically calculated systems contains the data required in accordance with NFPA. Fire Department Connections (FDC s) NFPA 13 sprinkler systems shall be 2 ½ female swivels with national standard threads (NST). FDC s for NFPA 13D and 13R sprinkler systems shall be 1 1/2 single female swivel with national standard thread (NST). Inspections and Acceptance Testing All requests for inspections and acceptance testing shall be made by calling the Tolleson Fire Inspector s office at ext. 102, no less than 48 hours in advance. The following information is required: Permit number Address (including suite number) Name of project or company Purpose of inspection A call back number, and responsible part No inspections or acceptance tests will be conducted without an approved and stamped set of plans on site and all required permits. Sprinkler systems will be pre-tested by the contractor and all necessary corrections will be made prior to calling for an acceptance test.

5 There shall be a minimum of three separate inspections prior to the approval of a new sprinkler system. Underground Fire Line Two Hour Hydrostatic Test System shall be pre-tested by the contractor All joints must be fully exposed Thrust blocks must be in place and exposed A flush test witnessed by the fire inspector shall be conducted after the 200 # hydrostatic test A copy of the Contractor s Material and Test Certificate for Underground Pipe (signed by the sub-contractor and general contractor) shall be provided to the fire inspector. Overhead Rough-In Inspection and Two Hour Hydrostatic Pressure Test System shall be pr-tested by the contractor System shall be tested for two hours with all system piping visible from the floor. Any obstructions of the system piping shall be removed by the contractor prior to the inspection. A copy of the Contractors Material and Test Certificate for Overhead Pipe (signed by the sub-contractor and general contractor) shall be provided to the inspector. Final Inspection The completed Contractor s Material and Test Certificates shall be provided to the fire inspector prior to a final inspection which includes: Visual inspection of the entire system (drywall and ceiling tiles in place) Exterior alarm bell test including third party monitoring, where required Hydraulic Calculation Data Plate shall be installed on all calculated systems Sprinkler Head Box(es) shall be properly installed and stocked with the proper sprinkler heads, wrench and NFPA 25 Supervision of all valves System shall be fully operational All signage shall be installed Main drain test shall be conducted and witnessed by the inspector Inspector s test and timed water flow alarm test witnessed by the inspector Other tests or inspections that may be required Tenant Improvement Projects

6 Modifications to existing systems affecting 20 or more heads, 40 or more feet of pipe or 40 or more pipe joints require plans to be submitted. Plans must be approved and on site prior to a Certificate of Occupancy being issued. A permit is required for all sprinkler construction or modification. For those modifications which are less than 20 heads, less than 40 feet of pipe or less than 40 pipe joints, plans are not required. These modifications require an over the counter permit.
