10 New Masters Course Molecular Bioengineering Strongly research oriented education at our new Biotechnology Building (BIOTEC), integration of cutting edge technology from all participating disciplines (Biology, Physics, Engineering, Medicine) Education has a strong focus on lab work and practical applications, also by contact to young start-up companies in the same BIOTEC building Problem-oriented research by frequent feedback between tutors. 12 At KULeuven a new master programme in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology has been launched. It is a joint initiative of the faculties of science, engineering and bio-engineering, and has a strong interdisciplinary flavour. It is firmly based on fundamental research in nanoscience and operates in close collaboration with the IMEC institute

13 Research at KULeuven -a strong research component in the area Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics. Research at IMEC facilities -programs spanning the range of academic research and industrial research with important industrial players. The research strategy is based on a system oriented vision, which is reflected in the offered course modules. Important research topics are spintronics, nanoelectronic materials and fabrication methods, bionanosystems, nanofluidics, nanometrology,nanophotonics and nanolithography

16 EMM-Nano link to E.U. strategy The objectives of the Master course are fourfold: - to provide a high quality Master course in an emerging field of interdisciplinary education - to provide education in a field of strategic importance for Europe and in line with the European R&D initiatives - to enhance the profile and visibility of the European Union in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology - to recrute top students worldwide

17 EMM-Nano A high quality masters needs to fulfil the following requirements: (i) It has to be interdisciplinary (ii) It has to respond fast to a field which is evolving fast (iii) It has to remain in good correspondence with a wide range of industrial sectors (iv) it has to offer a discussion forum for societal aspects of the field.
