The TU Dresden (Dresden University of Technology) a large public research university with more than 33,000 students a broad-based, full-curriculum institution with 14 faculties covering a broad variety of fields from engineering, the arts, natural and social sciences to economics and medicine international in character with students from more than 100 different countries undergraduate and graduate programs with a special focus on interdisciplinary work Karen.Maex@imec.be Beautiful Dresden Main Campus of the TU
The TU Dresden Four distinct profiles, each consistently interdisciplinary in its approach: Materials science Biomaterials, molecular and medical materials research, nanotechnology Information technology Population, infrastructure and traffic Water, energy and the environment A glimpse into a TU Dresden lab Karen.Maex@imec.be Impressions from TU Dresden main lecture hall TU Dresden s symbol: The Beyer building hosting an observatory
New Masters Course Molecular Bioengineering Strongly research oriented education at our new Biotechnology Building (BIOTEC), integration of cutting edge technology from all participating disciplines (Biology, Physics, Engineering, Medicine) Education has a strong focus on lab work and practical applications, also by contact to young start-up companies in the same BIOTEC building Problem-oriented research by frequent feedback between tutors. Professors and students, courses in patenting and grant writing
Facts and figures students (3005 international students) 1370 professors, 3441 researchers, 2672 administrative and technical staff, 7390 university hospital staff The K.U.Leuven income in 2002 was: 469 million euro 14 faculties, 50 departments, at about 240 sub-department 2359 publications per year in peer-reviewed magazines 334 doctorates per year (102 of them by foreign doctorandi) participation in Erasmus programme : 572 students from K.U.Leuven go abroad 591 foreign students come to K.U.Leuven
At KULeuven a new master programme in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology has been launched. It is a joint initiative of the faculties of science, engineering and bio-engineering, and has a strong interdisciplinary flavour. It is firmly based on fundamental research in nanoscience and operates in close collaboration with the IMEC institute
Research at KULeuven -a strong research component in the area Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics. Research at IMEC facilities -programs spanning the range of academic research and industrial research with important industrial players. The research strategy is based on a system oriented vision, which is reflected in the offered course modules. Important research topics are spintronics, nanoelectronic materials and fabrication methods, bionanosystems, nanofluidics, nanometrology, nanophotonics and nanolithography
Program concept Role of each university Initial Masters (2 year program) Integrated program with a common concept Year 1 at university 1, year 2 at university 2 Collaborative (master thesis evaluation from both universities) Importance of Nontechnical courses Importance of Lectures on Nanotechnology in Modern Society
Program themes: Main theme per university K.U.Leuven Program concept Role of each university Nanotechnology Nanoscience Biophysics Bionanotechnol ogy TUD/UL TU Dresden Chalmers Allocation of themes based on research strength Each partner has a relation with a research institute (Kavli/Casimir Research school, Max Planck, MC2, IMEC) Karen.Maex@imec.be
EMM-Nano link to E.U. strategy The objectives of the Master course are fourfold: - to provide a high quality Master course in an emerging field of interdisciplinary education - to provide education in a field of strategic importance for Europe and in line with the European R&D initiatives - to enhance the profile and visibility of the European Union in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology - to recrute top students worldwide
EMM-Nano A high quality masters needs to fulfil the following requirements: (i) It has to be interdisciplinary (ii) It has to respond fast to a field which is evolving fast (iii) It has to remain in good correspondence with a wide range of industrial sectors (iv) it has to offer a discussion forum for societal aspects of the field.
