1 SEN: SLCN Speech, Language and Communication Need (SLCN) Definition: SLCN refers to any difficulty communicating with others. This includes difficulties understanding spoken language, putting sentences together, unclear speech and communicating appropriately in social situations. Also includes stammering and voice problems. Age Range: Primary 4-11 UNIVERSAL Leadership 1 named member of staff who understands and champions SLCN on the Senior Leadership Team Whole school awareness of implications of speech and language difficulties 1 named member of staff who understands the impact of SLCN specifically and who can advise and support other staff All staff have access to appropriate training e.g. Language 4 Learning, and school reviews skills and knowledge of staff Communication friendly School has a well-developed programme for PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) which addresses social and living skills and emotional literacy e.g. SEAL (Social and Emotional Literacy) Within the classroom: Active promotion of listening skills with clear rules for listening established Visual strategies in place to enhance attention and listening in whole class sessions with visual displays to reinforce information Appropriate seating with good visual access Key vocabulary explained and information given in short simple active sentences Structured opportunities for children to practise language skills Abstract concepts supported by concrete materials Pupils encouraged to indicate when they do not understand and visual strategies used to support understanding Supportive peer systems in place Resources and Training Training Language for Learning Total Communication Workshops Resources Attention and Listening/memory and processing Attention and Listening cue cards Visual timetables Task Management schedules Social communication as above + Days of the Week schedules Receptive Language skills Visual Timetables Days of the Week schedules Vocabulary maps Language Land Talk for Writing Expressive Language skills Vocabulary maps Language Land Talk for Writing Vocabulary Builders
