Jamaica Union Conference 125 th Anniversary Adventist Heritage Quiz Procedure Sheet 3 1. The main objective of this Quiz is to educate church members about our doctrines and our history, so that they will become passionate and excited about our message and will again manifest great commitment to its mission and vision. 2. Though incentives will be given at every level for those who excel, the emphasis must not be on the competition aspect, but on the educational benefit. 3. The Conference Family Ministries Director (or someone else appointed by the administration) will supervise the programme from the Conference level. Trelawny and St. Ann Federations should give leadership in the Parish Finals. Each pastor along with his team should organize and execute this in his circuit, seeing to it that someone is appointed to manage the process in each church. 4. Each church is to select a team of six (6) persons by May 30; the district by June 27; the parish by August 29, and each conference by September 26. The Union champion will be determined on November 22 when the five (5) Conference teams will meet at Northern Caribbean University for the finals. 5. Each team will have six (6) persons, with four (4) participating at any given moment and the other two available for substitution at any given time. 6. Each team should be composed of at least one child, one teenager, and one adult. Both genders should be represented. 7. The Conference should see to the provision of incentives from the local church up to the Conference level. The Union will provide the grand incentive at the National finals, and each team will be awarded in some way. 8. The doctrinal portion of the quiz will be based on the SDA 28 Fundamental Beliefs, and the historical aspect may be gleaned from any good SDA History book Lest We Forget is an excellent source. 9. For the historical aspect, much attention will be given to the history of the SDA Church in Jamaica. 10. The questions at each level will be provided by the respective coordinators, and the Union will provide the questions for the grand finals. FACTS FROM THE HISTORY OF THE SDA CHURCH IN JAMAICA In 1890, William James Palmer found tract while walking along wharf in Kingston. About the same time he received a book from his father in Antigua, Henry Palmer. Both book and tract came from International Tract Society in United States. The name of the Book was The Coming King, written by Edson White. He wrote to Tract Society and got supply of literature which he distributed in Kingston. Also gave some to Dr. Ross at KPH, who gave them to Margaret Harrison. She visited Battle Creek in 1891 and was given three tracts on Health Reform.

4 On returning to Jamaica, she and a few other women joined William Palmer and about five other persons for worship at his home in Allman Town, Kingston. Because of growth, they soon moved to the home of Mrs. Harrison at 1 Laws Street. Later on they moved to a rented Hall at High Holborn Street. Harrison Memorial High School was founded in 1953 and was named in honour of Margaret Harrison Colporteur work began in 1892 with L. C. Chadwick, James Patterson, Phillip Morgan, and B. B. Newman. "The Book and Nutrition Centre" was previously known as "Book and Bible House", "Adventist Book Centre", and "Home Health Education Services". Haysmer - First missionary to Jamaica (May 26, 1893) First Church: North Street West Indies College (NCU) established 1907 West Indian Union Conference organized in It included all Adventist conferences and missions in the Caribbean and Central America, numbering about 3110 members, with headquarters in Kingston. The first president was Pastor G. F. Enoch. The headquarters of British West Indian Union Mission was located in Mandeville when it was established in It included Jamaica, Bahamas, Cayman, British Honduras, and Turks and Caicos. Allen Derek Bignal Everett Brown H. S. Walters also served as Youth Director of Jamaica Conference, beginning in He was from Panama. He also served as Youth and Education Director of the British West Indies Union. He became president of WJC in He inspired the establishment of many church schools and high schools. NCU conferred the honorary Doctor of Divinity in N. S. Fraser was instrumental in the acquisition of the Catherine Hall property in Montego Bay, where WJC has had its headquarters since He was WIU president when the Capital Development Fund was established. N. S. McKinney presided over the building of the present Union headquarters. He was granted the OBE by the QUEEN. Pastor L. B. Wellington was awarded the Order of Distinction for service to Religion by the government of Jamaica. Pastor Patrick Allen presided over the creation of the formation of NJC and NEJC and also the establishment of WIU IML Jamaica Conference formed 1902, accepted into sisterhood of conferences in March, 1903 by the General EJC and WJC were formed in 1944 as missions, with Headquarters in Kingston and Montego, then Mandeville respectively. In 1949, they were upgraded to Conferences. The original West Jamaica included the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester, St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland, and St. Elizabeth. 5 three were removed in the reorganization in 1961 to join with St. Catherine and St. Mary to form Central Jamaica Conference which was created at that time. CJC formed October, 1961 WJC reorganized Headquarters moved to Montego Bay in January 1962 NJC established in 2002 NEJC established in Became conference in 2010 Jamaica Union was formed in November, The first President was Pastor Everett Brown. The first church building erected in Jamaica was at Font Hill, St. Thomas. It housed 37 members. It was burnt down by arsonists shortly after. Adventists held a meeting of all its workers in the West Indies Union from November 5-15, 1898 at Text Lane (North Street). In February 1899, there were six organized churches and 15 companies, with 502 members Adventist institution in Jamaica named after American Adventist pioneer? Andrews Memorial Hospital. In 1905, William Daniel Peart, a new Adventist in Troy, Trelawny, decided to take his eldest daughter, Maud, out of the government teachers college, in response to the message of Revelation 18:4. Maud Peart appealed to General Conference to set up Adventist school in Jamaica. Decision made to purchase land in Bog Walk, then at Riversdale, St. Catherine. In June 1906, West Indian Training School began on a 98 acre property in Bog Walk, St. Catherine. Elder J. B. Beckner was put in charge. In 1907, under C. B. Hughes, it was removed to a 507 acre property in Riversdale, as West Indian Training School. It was closed in In 1918 a 141 acre property called Coolsworthy was purchased for the school In 1919, the buildings from Riversdale were relocated to Mandeville, its present site. Its first principal was Pastor Cassius B. Hughes from Texas. Financial difficulties because of the student's inability to pay the school fee caused the school to close in So it was relocated to Mandeville in The school restarted with three secondary school students in 1919 and had its first graduation in 1923 when three graduates finished the high school programme in the 12th grade. It was upgraded to 14th grade in The curriculum then included Ministry, Teaching, Nursing, Secretarial Science, and Bible Work. In 1936 it was upgraded to Junior College and was renamed West Indian Training College. In 1959, it became a Senior College and was called West Indies College. It then started the Bachelor's degree programme in Theology. The Bachelor's in Education begun in Andrews University started offering the Masters degrees in Theology on the WIC campus in 1974 and Education. West Indies College became a university (NCU) in...june, 1999 L. H. Fletcher served as WIC president from , then went on to the IAD to serve as Education Director. The first and oldest SDA school in Jamaica was the New Hope school which was established in 1897 at the Text Lane Church. It was later removed to North Street where it still operates today. Andrews Memorial Hospital started in 1912 as "Massage and Hydropathic Treatment Rooms", in Kingston. It became Andrews Memorial Hospital and Missionary Clinic in In May 1945, West Indian Training established the Andrews Memorial School of Nursing at the hospital. It started with seven nursing students. It was officially opened in December, Alexander Bustamante, the Leader of the Government, was the Guest Speaker. The Voice of Prophecy Correspondence School began in West Indies Union in 1947 The first local Adventist TV programme was the "Behold He Cometh" which was started by WJC in 1993 Westico Foods began in It was the first company to produce Vegetarian meats and Corn Flakes in Jamaica. It was finally closed in West Indies Union IML started operations in January 2004 when Pastor Herman Ming served as Treasurer, and ceased in It was preceded by the Capital Development Fund, organized by Pastor Aston Barnes who served as Treasurer at that time, to provide funding for church and institutional buildings. 5

6 ASI was launched in Jamaica in 1998 In 1996, under the leadership of Pastor Milton Gregory as Health Ministries Director, the Adventist Health Professionals Association was formed. She was elected in The first local Adventist to publish a book on Vegetarianism was Pastor Milton Mahabee. This was in 1985 NB. In addition to the above questions, the history of Adventism in each conference should be studied. 6
