1 Student issues concerning transitions: A month by month assessment.. September Homesickness - especially for freshmen Roommate conflicts caused by personality differences, lack understing unwillingness to compromise or new experience having to live with someone. Initial adjustment to academic environment - feelings inadequacy inferiority develop because discrepancy between high school status grades initial college performance. Class size, especially in mass lecture halls, lack personal interest by pressors performance expectations are also major factors. Values exploration - students are confronted with questions conscience over conflict areas race alcohol experimentation, morality, religion social expectations. New social life adjustments - including new freedom not having to check with parents about what time to be in, having opportunity to experience new areas, making your own decisions on when to conduct social activities establishing yourself in a peer group. Initial social rejections - creates feeling inadequacy when not immediately accepted in a peer group, or into a social sorority or fraternity. In-loco prentis problems - students feel depressed because real or perceived restrictive policies regulations college. Campus familiarization - includes becoming familiar with campus, classrooms, buildings meeting places. Long distance relationship - torn between being loyal to your significant or from home going out with new people. Can expectations both people be adequately met? Financial adjustment - involves adjusting to a somewhat tighter budget now that y are in schools opposed to when y were living at home. Students who are supporting mselves have to adjust to budgeting ir money also. International student adjustment - experience a sense confusion, vulnerability a lack any advocate in higher positions while trying to make a successful cultural academic transition. Family problems seem amplified because student may eir be caught in middle, relied on for answer or because y are far away, feeling helpless in helping reach a solution. Adjusting to "Administrative Red Tape" with students soon realizing that it is usually a long frustrating process when trying to find an answer to what seems to be a simple question, or trying to work something through administrative process.

2 October Academic stress from midterms builds with great dem for studying preparation. For some students this may be ir first exam semester. For many, midterm workload pressures are followed by feelings failure loss self-esteem. Roommate problems continue, but y are smaller in scope than previous months. Values exploration continuing, especially in area sexuality. Dating/non-dating/friendship anxieties extremely high. Non-dating students feel a sense loss esteem because so much value is placed upon dating. For women who do date, pressure to perform sexually increases consequently increases feelings rejection, loneliness guilt in some instances leads to unwanted pregnancies. Homesickness may be still felt by a number students. Job panic for mid-year graduates starts with onset resume preparation interviewing. Students decide to withdraw from school because y eir realize that college is not place for m, y return home for personal reasons or y transfer to anor school. Grief from not being part a group develops because inadequate skills for finding a group, or from not being selected by one. Financial strain sets in from lack budgeting experience. Homecoming blues develop because no date for social affairs, /or lack ability/opportunity to participate in activities. Graduate school syndrome starts to emerge from graduating seniors. Signing up for graduate school exams, wondering if you will be accepted, wondering which school to apply to questioning wher graduate school is right thing to do. Time conflicts between academic social expectation emerges. Signing up for classes involves starting to think about he following semester Adjusting to new study habits includes not just being able to study way y did in high school. More time greater workload needs to be incorporated into ir schedule for studying. Disenchantment with school - low reward level because student begins to realize that life at college is not as perfect as y were led to believe by parents, teachers counselors. Old problems seem to continue new ones are added. An external reality y had put heir hopes in has failed m.

3 November occur from inability to cope with pressures academic social expectations. Academic pressure begins to mount because procrastination, difficulty work assigned lack ability. Pre-finals stress starts to emerge as preparation begins for taking exams. Time management conflicts continue. Social apathy causes frustration because academic pressures. Depression anxiety increase because feelings that one should have adjusted to college environment. Economic anxieties increase from increase because funds from parents summer earnings begin to run out; loans become due. Problems develop due to increased alcohol consumption because students see this as an easy acceptable way to relieve stress from not knowing how to hle alcohol responsibility. Pregnancies start to show. Roommate problems may start to emerge again. This is mostly due to pressure school; tempers become shorter people are less tolerant ors. Deteriorating health starts to affect performance. Reasons include changing wear eir lack food quality or negative feelings about institutional foods. Students tend to eat more ice cream salads because y don't find as much red meat, yogurt etc. on line or lack new items force m to eat or places. Health is also affected by perceived inadequacies student health center. Students have given up making attempts to establish new friendships beyond two or three parasitic relationships. Living unit dissension causes uncomfortable feelings with residents. Results from apathy, academic pressures, need for vacation from school.

4 December Increasing thought/deliberation about suicide occur from inability to cope with pressures academic social expectations. Final exam pressures including anxiety, fear guilt increase as exams approach papers become due. Increased use alcohol drugs is related. Extracurricular time strains - seasonal parties, concerts, social service projects religious activities drain student energies. Financial worries occur with thought Christmas gifts travel costs. Pre-holiday blues emerges, especially for those who have concerns for family, those who have no home because family conflicts. Friendship tensions become high with onset final exams. Pressure increases to perform sexually because approach vacation extended separation. January Anxiety about second semester performance begins since y did not do as well as expected previous semester, y have added pressure doing well to be able to stay in school or to keep grades competitive with ir peers. Some students lose a loved one, a friend or significant or by death over break y find it hard to share happiness joy ors experienced over break. Moving to a new environment causes feelings intrusion because students move onto a unit where most friendships have been established, priorities set expectations understood. Unfamiliarity with campus also creates some anxiety. Money problems begin because students were unable to find jobs over holiday break. Post-holiday depression occurs at beginning because students are away from security positive strokes. Some students experience unwanted weight gains over break with holiday foods home cooking. Reincorporating social academic life is difficult at first with not having to worry about school for an extended period.

5 February Hourly exams or academic pressures approach. Depending upon wear, some people will experience cabin fever if wear forces m to stay inside for a lengthy period time. With lack organized activities to compensate for this, anti-social behavior sometimes occurs, such as excessive property damage. Vocational choice anxieties set in with onset job interviews. Worry hunting for a summer job begins. This is especially high for students who were unable to find work during Holiday break. Relationship anxieties increase as eir couples begin to strengn ir ties (engagement) or experiencing weakening relationships. Fall housing planning begins with trying to tentatively decide about living arrangements. March occur from an inability to cope with pressures academic social expectations. Academic pressures increase with approach mid-term exams. With pressures end semester approaching, many students start to increase ir use alcohol drugs. This can cause m any problems, both biologically behaviorally. Existential crisis for seniors - Must I leave school? Is my education worth anything? Was my major a mistake? Why go on? Living arrangement anxieties occur with forcing decisions - Should I move out? Live in same building? Stay with same roommate? Will a friend e left out plan? Summer job hunting will be heavy over spring break. Worry about finding a job or not finding one will cause severe anxiety. Trying to find money to use for spring break is a problem, especially when your peers are going to a place or than home you are not able to join m.

6 April occur from an inability to cope with pressures academic social expectations. Academic pressures increase with end semester approaching. Paper hourly exams approach. With nicer wear, women fear threat sexual assault. Summer job pressures continue. Senior job recruitment panic continues. Financial strain from spring break affects social life. Many students are forced to select a major are not sure what field y would like to enter. Social life pressures increase during this time period - formal dances, parties, concerts. With spring arriving, everyone wants to fall in love. Many students go through rejection or fear rejection or envy towards ir friends who have successfully found a significant or. Frustration from being ill because wear changes so dramatically. Causes colds, lethargic feelings limits ir social commitments. As pressures build, students tend to become disenchanted with many normal services food service is primary target. They tend to get tired eating " same old" institutional food. academic areas still exists. Finals pressures are at a critical level with papers, take-home exams studying. Some major effects pressure include; increased use cfee, no-doz, vivarin, amphetamines; increase or decrease in floor consumption. Less sleep a lower tolerance level with friends/peers. Senior job panic about employment (or lack ) increases as well as trying to determine how to finance oneself until first paycheck arrives. Summer job pressures increase for those who have not yet found one. Anxiety for couples who will be separated for summer. Also, fear that ir significant or will find someone else while y're apart. Depression over having to leave friends people that y have grown close to during school year. Anxiety having to go home after having been independent past year, especially if y are having conflicts without ir parents. May/June occur from an inability to cope with pressures academic social expectations. Anxiety develops because realization that year is ending a deficiency in a number
