LPL enlargers are designed and manufactured to provide years of dependable service. Please read this manual carefully so you may familiarize yourself with the correct assembly, set up, and operating procedures. Be sure to keep this manual for future reference. 4 MAJOR COMPONENTS The enlarger is assembled from the major component assemblies shown below. 5 ASSEMBLY 1. Screw the baseboard bolts (1) part way into the baseboard as shown. Lower the column base- plate (2) over the bolts so the bolts extend through the holes in the base-plate Slide the column toward the rear of the baseboard so that the bolts are in the narrow part of the keyhole slot as shown in picture 2 below. Tighten the bolts using the Allen wrench (3) provided with the enlarger. D O 2 CO CO 3. Take the Bellows/Negative Stage assembly (4) and line up the positioning pins (7) with the matching holes (8) in the Carriage (5). Secure the assemblies together using the clamping bolt and washer (6). Firmly tighten the clamping bolt with the Allen wrench (3). 3

6 ASSEMBLY (cont'd) OZ. if 4. Lower the lamphouse (9) onto the bellows/negative stage assembly so that the focus rods (11) engage the holes (10) in the bottom of the lamphouse. 1-_ 5. Push the lamphouse securing screws (12) up to engage the threaded holes in the bottom of the lamphouse, and tighten the screws to secure the lamphouse. -k \ 6. To install the enlarging lamp, undo the lamp socket securing screws (13) and withdraw the lamp socket (14) from the lamphousing. 7. Screw the enlarging lamp (15) into the socket, replace the the socket into the lamphouse, and tighten the socket securing screws. Use the same procedure when replacing a lamp. CAUTION: If the enlarger has been in use, the lamp and surrounding parts will be very hot. Disconnect the power cord and allow the parts to cool before replacing the lamp

7 ASSEMBLY (cont'd) 8. Open the front panel (17) of the lamphouse by sliding it up as shown. Place the condenser lens module (18) in the lamphouse. The module simply drops into position. 9. Insert the filter drawer/heat absorbing glass assembly (19) into the rails on the sides of the lamphouse The filter drawer accepts 75mm x 75nnm (3 in. x 3 in.) variable contrast or color printing filters, which are placed under the heat absorbing glass. To remove the heat absorbing glass, slide the retaining clip to the side. 10. Insert the negative carrier (20) from the front of the enlarger. Note: All LPL 7700 series negative carriers can be used with this enlarger.

8 11. The lens stage of the enlarger is threaded to accept enlarging lenses with standard 39mm "Leica" mounting thread. Install the appropriate lens according to the following table: Negative Size 35mm 6x4.5cm 6x6cm Lens Focal Length 50mm 75 or 80mm 75 or 80mm Note: This is a general guide. Check lens specifications to verify coverage for a specific negative size. 12. Loosen the securing screw (21), and insert the red filter mounting post (22) as shown. Tighten the securing screw, ensuring that the tip of the screw is in the groove of the mounting post. 13. A cable clip (23) is provided on the left side of the carriage to prevent the power cord from interfering with operation of the enlarger. Pull the clip open, insert the cord and snap the clip closed.

9 SETUP and OPERATION 1. Electrical Connections Connect the AC power cord from the lamphouse directly to the "Enlarger" receptacle of your timer as shown in the illustration. ENLARGING TIMER 2. Inserting the Negative in the Negative Carrier Open the negative carrier and place the film in the carrier with the emulsion side down and the top of the picture towards the front of the carrier. Check that the negative is free of dust and clean if necessary. Close the carrier and insert it in the enlarger. 3. Setting the Easel (sold separately). Adjust the masking easel to accommodate the size of the paper to be used.

10 OPERATION (cont'd) 4. Composition and Focus Set the Time/Focus switch on the timer to "Focus" so that the lamp comes on and the image is projected onto the easel. When the composition is satisfactory, set the Time/Focus switch to "Time" to turn off the enlarger. Adjust the enlarging lens to its widest aperture for the brightest image. a. Elevation Control Squeeze the elevation lock as shown to move the carriage up or down to achieve the desired image size. Simply release the elevation control lever to lock the carriage in position. b. Reference Scales The inside scales on the column indicate the degree of magnification when using a 50mm lens (right) and 80mm lens (left). The outside scales indicate the distance from the bottom of the carriage to the baseboard in inches (left) and centimeters (right). The reading from these scales can be recorded in order to quickly set up the enlarger to repeat the same print in future. c. Focusing Turn the Focus Control (24) as required to focus the image on the easel. For precise focus, the use of a focus scope or magnifier is recommended. Note: If focusing feels too tight or too loose, the Focus Control is provided with a tension adjustment (25) to the rear of the knob. -8-

Determining f-stop and Exposure Time The appropriate combination of lens aperture setting and exposure time to achieve proper exposure can be determined by making a series of test prints or test strips, or by means of an exposure calculator or darkroom exposure meter. 6. Inserting the Photo Paper With the enlarger turned off, open the easel and place a sheet of enlarging paper in the easel with the emulsion (smooth) side up. Then close the easel to secure the paper in position. 7. Making the Exposure Check that the lens is set to the desired f-stop and the timer to the desired exposure time. With the Time/Focus switch on the timer in the "Time" position, and press the "Expose" button to make the exposure. LARGE MAGNIFICATIONS Floor Projection Magnifications greater than are possible on the baseboard can be achieved by rotating the column and projecting the image on the floor. To prevent the enlarger from becoming overbalanced and tipping over, secure the baseboard to the supporting table with clamps, or place a suitably heavy counterweight on the baseboard. Use the Allen wrench to loosen the baseplate bolts and remove the column. Turn the column 180 and place it back over the bolts. Slide the baseplate in position and tighten the bolts. -9-

12 ACCESSORIES NEGATIVE CARRIERS Glassless Carriers 00 Standard glassless carriers are available for popular negative formats from 35mnn to 6x7cm. Universal Glass Carrier with Masking A 6x7 glass negative carrier with adjustable masking blades. Allows cropping of negatives or handling of odd size negatives for which there is no standard carrier. MASKING EASELS 8x10 1=k 2-Blade Adjustable Easel All metal construction, adjustable borders, accommodates print sizes from 2"x3" to 8"x10". 14x17 4-Blade Adjustable Easel Professional quality 4-blade design allows easel to remain centered on the baseboard. Accommodates print sizes up to 11"x14" with adjustable borders and 14x17 prints with fixed borders. ET-500 Digital Enlarging Timer FocusScope II masa Highly accurate professional quality enlarger timer with a digital display and timing range of 0.1 to 999 seconds. An optional footswitch is available for convenient hands-free activation of the timer. An economical focusing aid to simplify precise focusing and ensure that prints are as sharp as possible. Dust Cover Copy Camera Attachment Heavy-duty dust cover protects the enlarger between printing sessions and during storage. The Copy Camera Attachment converts the 6600 enlarger chassis into a sturdy copy stand. The camera mounts directly to the adapter with included mounting screw.

13 ACCESSORIES (cont'd) C6700 Dichroic Color Lamphouse VC6700 Variable Contrast Lannphouse The versatile C6700 Dichroic Color diffusion lamphouse handles both color and B&W printing for negative formats up to 6x7cm. Built-in fade-free yellow, magenta, and cyan dichroic filters provide precise stepless color filtration. The C6700 lamphouse can also be used for printing on variable contrast and graded B&W papers. The VC6700 VCCE diffusion lamphouse greatly simplifies B&W printing with variable contrast papers. Built-in filtration allows stepless adjustment of the contrast within a range of grades 0-5, without the need to readjust exposure values. The VC6700 is equally suited for printing with graded papers. For negative formats up to 6x7cm. Enlarging Lenses High quality, economical LPL Enlarging lenses are offered in a range of focal lengths, and feature 39mm "Leica" mounting threads for convenient fitting to all LPL enlargers, as well as enlargers from other manufacturers. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS When using this LPL photographic product, basic safety precautions should always be taken including: 1. Read and understand all instructions provided with this product. 2. Avoid touching the lamp cover or other hot areas of the enlarger. Always disconnect the power supply and allow parts to cool before replacing the lamp. Keep ventilation areas clear. 3. Close supervision is necessary when this product is used by or near children. Do not leave it unattended while it is plugged into an outlet. 4. Do not use this product in wet environments or areas with high temperatures. 5. Do not use this product near combustable materials such as solvents or flammable sprays. 6. Do not use this product if the power supply cord has been damaged or if the product has been dropped or damaged. Have it checked by a qualified service person before using. 7. Route the power supply cord away from hot areas. Do not let the cord hang over a counter edge or across an open area where it may be tripped over or pulled. 8. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not attempt to disassemble or repair this product. Always have it serviced by qualified service personnel when necessary. Incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock hazards. 11
