1 SELECT PORTFOLIO BOND (wealth managers) ADVISER GUIDE. A clear approach to investing. Our Select Portfolio Bond is designed to provide your clients with a simple, straightforward investment with a wide range of carefully selected, quality funds to choose from. This is not a consumer advertisement. It is intended for professional advisers only and should not be relied upon by private investors or any other person.

2 2 WHAT DOES THE SELECT PORTFOLIO BOND OFFER YOU AND YOUR CLIENTS? An investment bond that: Has a simple, straightforward charging structure. Supports facilitated adviser charging, giving you and your clients payment options for advice and related services. Has a range of carefully selected and monitored funds, including Legal & General flagship funds such as our Distribution and Index tracking range. Can provide a fixed or variable level of regular withdrawals, with the ability to take up to 5% of the initial investment each year without creating an immediate liability to income tax. Has a range of estate planning trust schemes and solutions updated to include provision for facilitated adviser charges. Allows your clients to switch any combination of funds within their bond up to twice a month without charge. Unless otherwise stated, the information in this document is correct as of September The value of a bond can fall as well as rise, and your clients may get back less than they invest. Although there is no fixed term, an investment bond should be considered a medium to long-term investment of at least five years, ideally longer. All tax information is based on our understanding of current law and HM Revenue & Customs practice. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in the future.

FACILITATED ADVISER CHARGES Initial Facilitated Adviser Charge An amount in pounds, deducted before an investment is made into the bond. Ongoing Facilitated Adviser Charge A percentage of the bond s value each year, payable monthly.

4 4 TARGET MARKET/SUITABILITY. We have designed our Select Portfolio Bond to primarily meet the needs of the target market set out in the Target Market column below. Our Select Portfolio Bond may also be suitable for clients outside this target market where you ve assessed and identified a particular need. It is an adviser s responsibility to discuss, and agree, the individual client s need and make an appropriate recommendation. We ve shown this range of clients in the Potential Suitability column. All investment periods. AttITUDE TO RISK TAX STATUS other INVEStmEntS Must be prepared to accept at least some risk to their capital. Basic, higher or additional rate taxpayers. Clients who have already used, or likely to use, their annual ISA allowance. IncomE/WEALTH Clients with sufficient wealth to commit to an investment of at least 20,000. May have income levels high enough to be higher or additional rate taxpayers at outset. Clients with sufficient wealth to commit to an investment of at least 20,000. CLIENT AIMS To achieve long-term growth, income, or a combination of the two. To mitigate the amount of inheritance tax payable on their estate. To gift assets through the use of trusts. To take advantage of investments that they may not be able to access outside pooled investments (for example, commercial property). To make an investment that s easy to manage and doesn t require regular paperwork to be completed. To access a wide range of funds. To have the flexibility to change fund selection without incurring a tax liability. To make an investment that is not currently assessed for eligibility for long-term care.

5 5 fresco segments. FRESCO is a segmentation tool, which describes people in terms of their product holdings and demographics as well as attitudes to financial services. FRESco SEGments SUmmARY for the CoRE Target Market 3 GolDEn BoYS Typically male, 25-45, married with some of the highest incomes in the country. Time is at a premium so arranging direct is preferred life and pension products being the notable exception. Technology aware, they are the most frequent internet users of all the segments. 5 True BlUES Couples and families with teenage or adult children living at home. Higher social grade, well educated and well off, with incomes likely to be greater than 75,000. In the past year, more than average will have paid off their mortgage, inherited money, started a business or bought a new car. 8 SilVER FoXES Better off older couples who have probably retired. Wealthy with no mortgage or loans, and with high levels of savings and investments. Some aversion to the internet. Recent life stage events could have included paying off the mortgage, death of a partner or purchasing a new car. 9 ruby wedding All aged 55+, mostly married with no mortgage, half are retired. For many, a pension is their main source of income, normally 20,000-30,000 a year. They are more likely to own investments, especially investment bonds or gilts. Generally cautious, debt levels are low and they are less likely to switch providers or make new financial arrangements. Over 50% have never used the internet. If you would like more information about FRESCO segments please go to UNSUITABLE CLIENTS. POLICYHOLDER AttRIBUTES AGE/STAGE OF LIFE Very young clients (aged 0 to 17). IncomE/WEALTH Those unlikely to have sufficient wealth to invest 20,000. LIKELY AttITUDE to/capacity FOR RISK TAX STATUS other INVEStmEntS CLIENT AIMS Clients not willing to accept any risk to their investment. Non-taxpayers, unless using for estate planning needs or for a fixed level of income. Should consider use of ISA or pension before choosing Select Portfolio Bond. Accumulation by payment of regular premiums.

6 6 FACILITATED ADVISER CHARGES. You ll agree with your clients how they ll pay for your services before they invest. We offer you and your clients a way of paying these charges through the Select Portfolio Bond. We call these Facilitated Adviser Charges. We offer two types of facilitated adviser charges: Initial facilitated adviser charge To pay for the advice you provide that leads to your client making an investment or additional investment into their bond. This is an amount deducted before investment is made into the bond. For example Your client sends us a cheque for 50,000 and asks us to pay you a 3% initial facilitated adviser charge. We pay you 1,500 and the remaining 48,500 is invested into your client s Select Portfolio Bond. IMPortant: An initial facilitated adviser charge will have no tax implications for your client as we facilitate the payment to you before the investment is made into the bond. ONGOING facilitated adviser charge To pay for any ongoing advice or related services that you are providing to your client. This is a percentage of the bond s value each year deducted and paid to you on a monthly basis. This can be stopped, started or changed at any time. For example Your client asks us to pay you an ongoing facilitated adviser charge of 0.5% of the value of their bond each year. We ll deduct 1/12th of 0.5% of the value of your client s bond each month and pay this to you. If your client s bond is worth 52,801 when the charge is due, we ll deduct 22 from the value of their bond and pay this to you. IMPortant: An ongoing facilitated adviser charge will reduce the value of your client s bond. For tax purposes, ongoing facilitated adviser charges are withdrawals from the bond, and are therefore included in any calculation to determine whether a chargeable event has occurred. 7 7 PLUS THE BENEFITS OF AN INVESTMENT BOND WRAPPER FROM LEGAL & GENERAL. TAX PLANNING Ability to take a total of up to 5% of the initial investment each policy year without creating an immediate Income Tax liability. Easy switching between funds without incurring a personal liability to Capital Gains Tax. You and your clients can choose when to cash in all or part of the bond (without any surrender penalties) to best suit your clients tax position. The bond can be made up of up to 10,000 identical contracts for further flexibility. ESTATE PLANNING A range of trust schemes and solutions are available including: Discounted Gift Scheme (Discretionary and Absolute versions) Loan Trust Scheme (Discretionary and Absolute versions) Gift Scheme (Discretionary, Absolute and Flexible versions) Probate Scheme (Discretionary and Absolute versions) Will Trust Solution. The bond can be assigned without triggering a liability to Capital Gains Tax. REGULAR WITHDRAWAL options Variable amount of up to 10% of the bond s value. Fixed amount of up to 10% of the amount invested. Natural income available from four Legal & General funds; the Distribution range, the Property fund and the High Income fund. EASY ADMINISTRATION Total amounts taken from the bond of up to 5% of the initial investment each policy year do not create a chargeable event. No need for record keeping for a yearly tax return, until a chargeable event occurs. We provide the chargeable event certificate that gives all the information you ll need for your clients tax return. Switches do not create additional paperwork.
