IPT Helpdesk in Belgium Nicolas Noé IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
IPT Helpdesk in Belgium IPT Context (why IPT, how it integrates with the decentralization strategy and other tools,...) Features and technology Live demonstration (connecting datasets, data quality tools,...) IPT support & platform involvement IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Why do we need IPT? - Designed as a central architecture where key information is harvested into a global index. - Relies on central harvesting and indexing script. - Handles multiple protocols (e.g. DiGIR, BioCASE and TAPIR). => Harvesting and indexing is becoming a serious bottleneck! => Such model can t be populated to Nodes! IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
The new GBIF software suite - Publishers require a simpler software to rapidly publish existing resources (IPT). - Nodes require a software for harvesting and indexing resources (HIT). - Nodes require simple solutions to easily publish resources (NPT). => The Informatics suite (IPT + HIT + NPT) is aimed at enabling Nodes to build their own GBIF sub-network. => IPT is the most important and first available piece of this puzzle IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Features and technology Easy to use publishing of : Primary biodiversity data Names and taxonomy Metadata IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Primary Biodiversity Data Primary biodiversity data are the digital text or multimedia data records that details the instance of an organism the what, where, when, how and by whom of the organism s occurrence and recording. Current GBIF data is almost exclusively Primary biodiversity data (or occurrences) IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Checklist definition - Summarized list of species - List has an explicit scope - The list is complete relative to the scope -Examples * Birds of the World, Howard and Moore 3 rd edition * Flora of China GBIF needs information about all collected names : synonyms, taxonomy changes,... IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Checklist scope Taxonomic All (IUCN Red-List) Well-known groups (Higher Plants/Fish), specific order Geographic World Global Species Datasets Regional/National (Amazon Basin, Namibia) Sub-national (State, County, bounded areas) Thematic or Semantic Environmental Extremophiles, Cold-Tolerant, Xeric Biotic (Venomous, Predators, Parasitic) Ecological (Invasive, Forest Pests, Pollinators, Leaf-Miners) Administrative (CITES, Red-Lists, Commercially valuable) IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Combining checklists IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Metadata Data about data Documents the who, what, where, when and how about data Facilitates data sharing and re-use William K. Michener, Meta-information concepts for ecological data management, Ecological Informatics, Volume 1, Issue 1, January 2006, Pages 3-7, ISSN , DOI: /j.ecoinf ( IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Two perspectives on metadata Data producer perspective Data user perspective -Document data with minimum effort - Assess the value of the data for others - Bridge the gap between data owners and users - Educate users about the characteristics of the data - Discover if data exists - Identify source, provenance - Make judgement about data quality and usability before getting it - Minimise costs involved in the search, retrieval, integration and use of the data IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
New DarwinCore IPT data model From a flat to a star schema (1-n relationships) Final version for november 2009 (= IPT 1.0) IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
IPT base technologies and requirements Java Tomcat Geoserver Why? Platform-independence, suitable, reliable, worldwide accepted standards and tools, familiar IPT versions IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Geoserver IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Demonstration Basic tour Connecting datasets Data explore and data quality use Data interfaces IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
IPT support and platform IPT workshop involvement Support and helpdesk : What : help installing / configuring / publishing data / customization (branding and/or DwC extensions) Where : phone / / on-site In touch with IPT developers Platform IPT instance ( IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Current limitations Performance (geoserver speed and dataset size) Authorization system Polishing / Integration within the GBIF informatics suite IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
Roadmap Final release after DarwinCore ratification (november 2009?) Internationalization Annotations system Integration with other tools (external and GBIF) IPT Helpdesk in Belgium
