26 Albany, NY The New York State and National Registers of Historic Places are the official lists of properties significant in state and national history. Registers listing supports local preservation efforts and provides access to incentives, such as tax credits and grants. Bureau staff help the public prepare registers nominations and evaluate registers eligibility during environmental review.

27 The Onondaga Highlands-Swaneola Historic District in Syracuse was documented through a historic resources survey and listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places for its distinguished residential architecture and association with the city s early 20th century development and growth.

38 Archaeology, the study of the past through the material remains that people have left behind, is an important component of historic preservation environmental review. 39 State and federal agencies that fund, license, or approve projects must consult with the bureau to determine if historic or cultural resources will be affected by the proposed activity. Historic preservation environmental review ensures that properties that are listed or eligible for listing on the registers are considered and adverse impacts are avoided or mitigated during the project planning process. 57 Tax Credits Incentive for the rehabilitation of historic buildings (NR listed) Federal credit is 20% of rehabilitation costs, for incoming producing properties. State has both an income- producing and a residential credit

58 Market Arcade, Buffalo, NY The SHPO provides technical assistance in several areas, including the federal preservation tax credit program, which offers owners of historic commercial, industrial, or residential rental properties a federal income tax credit equal to 20% of the rehabilitation costs.

59 The state preservation tax credit programs offer owners of properties that qualify for the federal tax credit a state income tax credit equal to 20% of the approved rehabilitation costs. Owner-occupied residential properties that are listed on the registers are also eligible for a state tax credit equal to 20% of the rehabilitation.
