Told from the perspective of a spinster banker named Mattie Ross, the story revisits the central chapter of her life: the winter of 1873, when, as a fourteenyear-old from Yell County, Arkansas, she hunts down Tom Chaney, her father s killer, with the help of a tough U.S. marshal, the old one-eyed jasper Rooster Cogburn, and the cowlicked LaBoeuf, a young Texas Ranger, in whom she recognizes a kindred sense of grit. The novel was adapted for the screen several times: first in 1969 as a Western starring John Wayne as Rooster (a role that won him an Academy Award), and most recently in 2010 by the Coen Brothers.

3 In addition to its more literal meanings, grit often connotes invincible spirit, determination, and fearlessness. Harvard Business Review defines grit as a willingness to commit to long-term goals and to persist in the face of difficulty. Our booth True Grit ties the etymological aspects of the word grit to the popular cultural history and its archetypes arising out of Portis s novel. On display are works of art that were made with materials exuding the grittiness of the not-yetgentrified streets of the East End of London, and New York s East Village and Harlem in the 1970s and 80s, as in the work of Gilbert and George, David Hammons, and Keith Haring; or simply tough, untested industrial materials, such as Alberto Burri s visionary experiments with acrovinyl and cellotex to create his Crettos ; Günther Uecker s obsessive hammering of oversized nails onto the picture plane; and Frank Stella s meticulously hand-sculpted works from scraps of metal, industrial detritus, and car paint rusty and sharp-edged. Richard Prince, Sigmar Polke, and Christopher Wool s works with their spray-painted graffiti-like sensibility akin to that of the streets; Andy Warhol s glitter-splattered Diamond Dust Shoes nodding to the downtown disco scene; and Barbara Kruger s cleverly transgressive mantra linking business and history, complete the mise-en-scene of True Grit. Gilbert and George famously declared in the 1980s, We want to be completely outside with what you call hooligans and tramps.
