1 Lesson Plan: American Flag & Civic Responsibility Subjects Language Arts / Writing / Social Studies Grade Level 3-5 Language Arts CCCS 3 rd -RL3.3, W.3.2, SL3.4, L th -W , L4.6 5 th -W , W5.10, SL5a-d, SL L5.6 Brief Description An activity to learn the history of the American flag as a symbol of freedom and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Lesson Objectives Students will be able to: Identify and discuss the creation of the American flag and its correlation to freedom Identify how the American flag changed from Colonial times to present Identify the responsibilities and rights of citizens as it pertains to the American flag Identify a civic organization, Boot Campaign, and what it does for the military and veterans Supplies white bulletin board paper crayons, markers, or colored pencils scissors glue multicolored construction paper tape American flag displayed in the classroom Boot Campaign video, literature, and pictures boot picture for reproduction The Lesson
2 ENGAGE Begin by writing these vocabulary words on the board: o America, American flag, boots, timeline, symbol, freedom, patriotism, citizen, citizen rights, citizen responsibilities o Discuss each word and their meanings EXPLORE In divided small groups, ask the students to use the library and/or the Internet to create a timeline demonstrating the history of the American flag beginning with You may assign each group a different time in history that could be highlighted. Each group should include pictures and describe the historical significance of each flag. A good resource is Discuss what it means to be a U.S. citizen and why the American flag is the symbol of freedom for each citizen EXPLAIN Upon completion of the large group research activity, the students will: o Using their research, the students will create a timeline of the American flag on white bulletin board paper The bulletin board paper will then be divided into 2 sections Beginning with 1776, the year will be written in red at the top of the 2 section The picture of the flag will be created and glued under the year Any other facts will be written under the flag. Examples would be the U.S. Presidents or other historic events ELABORATE In correlation to the Freedom Bracelet lesson plan, the students will write their name on a paper boot, color it, and prepare it for display as a sign of freedom and sponsorship for Boot Campaign *(Each time a student purchases a freedom bracelet, a student will write his/her name on the boot and with the teacher s help, write the name of a veteran on the boot. The boots will be displayed around the school as a sponsorship symbol for each bracelet purchased.) The Lesson
3 Upon the completion of each 2 section from each group, display the long mural outside the classroom or in the school hallway. Title the mural The American Flag, Our Symbol of Freedom Display this prior to your school s Veteran s Day Celebration to demonstrate to them the students understanding of our pathway to freedom and the symbol that represents that freedom. The boots will be displayed around the school each time a freedom bracelet is purchased. EVALUATE Upon completion of each group s timeline, ask the students to write a description of the citizens involvement in the creation of the American flag and the rights and responsibilities achieved at that point in history Have students tape each section of American flag history in order Each group will then give an oral report of their part of the timeline
