3 1.0 General The Argus Infrared Detector is highly sensitive, fast-acting detection unit designed to detect an ember or fire in its beginning stage. Incorporated in an Argus fire control system the Argus infrared detector will detect, react and extinguish the threat before it can cause extensive damage to the machinery or process in which it is installed. Taking advantage of the latest in high-speed detector sensor technology allows the Argus infrared detector to perform these tasks. The detector cell is capable of detecting an ember, spark or fire in 8 microseconds ( ). This speed allows several advantages to be realized in the overall detector unit design, not the least of which is discrimination, or the ability to determine whether or not the ember or spark fits a velocity profile that would be produced by the material flow in a duct or chute. The design incorporates this capability and continually monitors the duct for embers, sparks or fire, that meet the qualifications of a particular velocity/intensity profile. This feature considerably reduces the risk of false alarm due to electrical noise present in all industrial environments. In addition to velocity/intensity profile monitoring, the detector incorporates an ambient light filter to reduce the sensitivity of the system to ambient or background lighting in the visible region of the spectrum, while allowing radiation in the infrared region to be detected. The detectors are designed to latch or lock into alarm when an ember, spark or fire is visible to the detector cell. Once the detector is in alarm, it can only be reset by the control panel or by removing power from it. The recommended application is for detection in dark or semi-dark areas with less than 10 foot candles (108 lux) ambient illumination. If properly located at the sides, or top of a duct, the detector design effectively eliminates the buildup of dust on the lens. Normally, the detector is mounted flush with the duct wall, so the air traveling through the ducts tend to clean the lens surface. CAUTION: Direct or indirect exposure to ambient light could cause the detector to go into alarm, causing the system to discharge the extinguishing agent. CAUTION: If tint, dye, or other materials are added to the process, and they coat the interior of the duct, the detector lens would require periodic cleaning. The region of detector sensitivity is between the limits of 750 nanometers and 1250 nanometers, with peak sensitivity at 950 nanometers. The visible portion of the spectrum lies between the limits of 450 and 750 nanometers, making the detector less sensitive to visible light. page: 1

7 3.2 mounting CAUTION: Care must be taken when drilling or cutting into duct so as to make sure no metal shavings or pieces fall into the duct work. This could cause extensive damage to the machinery. Determine the number and best location of the detectors as determined by the size of the duct and the type of machinery being protected. Argus engineering can assist. Using an Argus template as a guide, position the detectors in accordance with the required spacing (Item 9 on page 6). The detectors should be positioned so that the bolt and lens holes are parallel to the direction of the duct. See page 9. The detectors should not be placed on the bottom of the duct where material could settle on the detector lens. See drawing 3.2 The detector s LED indicator light should be pointing where it is easily visible, and the cover of the detector can be removed. For each detector, three (3) holes will need to be cut into the wall of the duct. CAUTION: After drilling or cutting holes in duct make sure all sharp edges are removed and sanded smooth. Use a magnet to remove all metal from duct work. From the inside of the duct, push two (2) button head bolts through the two 7mm holes. On the outside of the duct secure each bolt with a M6 (lock) nut to the duct work. Place the detector on the two bolts with the gasket towards the duck work. Make sure LED indicator is facing the correct direction. Use two additional M6 lock nuts to secure the detector to the mounting bolts. NOTE: Never mount detectors on the bottom of the duct. page: 5

10 3.5 WIRING All wiring from control panel to the Argus Infrared detectors to be 20 to 16 AWG (0.5 to 1.5mm) Recommended wire colors are Black, White, Red and Green. Each zone of detectors (refer to specific control panel manual for allowable number of detectors per zone) is connected in series to the control panel. With the control panel and detectors properly located and all power removed, pull the required wires through the appropriate sized conduit and terminate the wire at the proper detector. Leave extra wire at both ends to allow for connecting the wires to the device. 12 4.0 Maintenance CAUTION: Direct or indirect exposure to ambient light will cause the detector to go into alarm. All holes (for testing) and cracks must be sealed with thick black tape, or other suitable means so as to not let light into the duct. WARNING: Placing the detectors into alarm will cause the control panel to go into alarm, discharge the extinguishing agent and shut down the process being protected. Reference the control panel manual or your Argus representative as to the best way to disable the extinguisher and shutdown circuits before testing detectors. The Argus Infrared Detector sensitivity is preset at the factory. Test with an infrared test light (part number 34016) and clean the detector lens is all that is required after installation. Argus strongly recommends that each detector be tested twice a year. Lenses should be checked and wiped cleaned at this time with a soft non-abrasive cloth. In applications where tints or dyes are used the lens should be inspected more frequently and cleaned as required. Testing (See above Warning) To test the detectors, drill a small hole (6 mm) halfway between detectors. Note: on applications where more than 2 detectors are used as in filter houses, it will be necessary to drill 2 or more holes. Place the hand held test light with the LED end into the hole and push the DET Test button. On the test unit, the green LED will come on acknowledging the test unit was fired. On the IR Spark Detectors, the red LED will come on. Ensure BOTH (or all) red LEDs came on. At this point, the panel should go into alarm, horn/strobe will activate. Reset the panel to normal condition if all operates as designed. If the red LED or control panel does not indicate an alarm status, further troubleshooting should be performed to determine the source of the problem. Consult with your Argus manuals and/or Argus representative if a solution is not readily obtainable. If the panel does not indicate alarm when signaled, then the fire protection system is not operating within specifications and the protected process must be shut down. Place a piece of black electrical tape over drilled hole to ensure no light leaks into duct work which will activate the spark detectors. Log date inspected for future reference. After a fire or alarm the detector lens must be inspected for damage. If the lens or the detector shows any signs of scorching or other damage the detector should be replaced. Note, since damage to detector may not be visible, Argus highly recommends that a test of the detector be conducted. Also, before resetting detector(s) an investigation of the cause should be conducted in effort to eliminate future occurrences. No internal maintenance is required unless the unit does not respond to the test light, in which case the unit should be replaced and returned to Argus. page: 10

13 5.0 warranty The Argus Fire Control (Argus) components of your Fire Protection System supplied to you by Argus are warranted to you as the original purchaser for one year from the date of delivery against defect in workmanship and material. Argus will replace or repair any Argus-supplied component which, in its opinion, is defective and has not been tampered with or subjected to misuse, abuse or exposed to highly corrosive conditions; provided that the System has been installed and maintained in accordance with the installation manual, that written notice of the alleged defect shall have been given to Argus within 30 days after discovery thereof and prior to the expiration of one (1) year after delivery, and that, if Argus so instructs, such article or part thereof is promptly returned to Argus with shipping charges prepaid. Purchased products which are supplied but not manufactured by Argus are warranted against defects resulting from the manufacturer s fabrication, process or parts for one (1) year from the date of purchase. Evaluation of each reportedly defective product returned to Argus will be made by the original manufacturer or an agent thereof and their judgment will be final. Disclaimer of liability and limitation of damages: Except as stated in the warranty above, Argus makes no other warranties whatsoever for this particular system, whether express or implied, including the warranties of merchantability and fitness for any particular purpose. Argus does not assume, or authorize any person to assume for it, any other liability in connection with the sale of this system. Under no circumstances shall argus be liable for any special, incidental, consequential, or indirect damages resulting from the use of the system. Argus s maximum liability for any direct damages shall be limited to the purchase price paid by the distributor for the system. page: 11
