2 A CELEBRATION OF JESUS VICTORY OF LIFE OVER DEATH ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY 9905 SW McKenzie Street Tigard, Oregon Gerlinde Lamer (503) x122 Fr. John s cell (541) jhenderson@satigard.org PLANNING THE FUNERAL SERVICE This preparation form may be used to plan the funeral of someone who has died or it may also be used to plan your own funeral. It should be kept with other important documents where family members can find it. You may want to include your family or friends when you plan your funeral Mass using this form. In a Catholic faith-community, funerals reflect the dying and rising of Christ, and therefore are true celebrations of life that are meant to be hope-filled, as well as comforting for all. You may want to give your church a copy of this form. (When a death occurs in the family, the parish should be contacted before making arrangements with a Funeral Home.) NAME OF PERSON WHO HAS DIED: (OR) MY NAME IS: ADDRESS: PHONE: OBITUARY: (A summary of the most important events/moments in my life) (use another sheet if you would like to write on and attach it)

3 VIGIL FOR THE DECEASED (THE WAKE) Of all the parts of the funeral rites, the vigil (wake) is sometimes the most difficult because it is usually the first time family and friends view the remains of the deceased and confront the fact of death and loss of a loved one. While some would prefer to avoid the vigil because of the pain and grief, this ritual moment can be a catalyst for the grieving process a process fostering psychological and spiritual health. Even when, for some reason, the remains of the deceased are not available for the funeral rites, gathering together for prayer and support before the funeral mass is still advisable. When Catholics gather at the vigil, they show their respect and reverence for the deceased. They recall and share memories of the person who has died. The community comforts the family with love and friendship, the assurance of prayer and the offer of assistance. This vigil may be celebrated in the home of the deceased, in the funeral home or celebrated in the church. SIGN OR GESTURE yes no IF YES, WHAT SIGN OR GESTURE? I WISH TO BE CREMATED yes no The Catholic Church does not forbid cremation yet it is important to realize that it is significant to have the body present for the funeral mass. Following the funeral mass, the body of the deceased should then be cremated. Church law does permit, however that the cremated remains can be present for a funeral mass. The cremated remains should always be buried or entombed to provide a recognized place for memorialization of the deceased. Even if cremation is chosen for simplicity, the mourners should not be deprived of an opportunity for prayer. The Catholic Church invites the celebration of the funeral Mass of its deceased members. The funeral Mass is a prayer for God s mercy for the deceased and solace for the living and does not presume a life of exemplary faith or virtue.

8 At certain times the Order of Christian Funerals can be celebrated outside Mass. This happens when the funeral Mass is not permitted for example on solemnities of obligation and during the Easter Triduum. It can also be celebrated outside mass when it is not possible to celebrate the funeral mass, for example, if a priest is not present. FUNERAL DIRECTORS Funeral Directors provide a service to families. The family chooses the funeral director based upon professional standards, long-service to the community, church participation or friendship. It is important for the parish and funeral directors to work together in order to provide the best pastoral care for the bereaved family. THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR I HAVE CHOSEN IS I WISH TO BURIED IN WHICH CEMETERY STIPENDS A stipend is generally offered to the church on the occasion of a funeral. The amount of the stipend is usually between $150 and $200. A typical stipend for a cantor and musician is usually $150 per person. Our priest does not receive a stipend. RECEPTIONS Our gathering space may be used by parish families at no charge for a reception or luncheon following a funeral. MEMORIAL GIFTS Memorial Gifts to St. Anthony might include the following: ST.ANTHONY CHURCH, ST. ANTHONY CEMETERY CARE FUND, ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL ENDOWMENT FUND

9 SONG IDEAS FOR MY SERVICE The sacred and communal nature of our Catholic Funeral Celebrations requires careful planning in the selection of music. This planning will insure the ability of all those gathered to actively participate in the celebration. Because of the sacredness of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, secular instrumental or vocal music, or the use of recorded music of any kind may not be used. All music listed below comes from the hymnal in our pews, Breaking Bread. There are other choices in Breaking Bread as well. Because the Funeral Liturgy is Communal Prayer, we ask that all music selections come from our Hymnal. Please consult with your our Director here at St. St. Anthony if you have any questions. 13 St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery Our parish cemetery is located at SW 115th and Gaarde Street, about two miles from the church. The cemetery was established in 1890 and, with the recent addition of 1.5 acres, is expected to be able to continue active operation for at least an additional 100 years. A permanent care fund has been established to maintain the cemetery when it ceases to have additional space for new burials. Internment spaces are available for both traditional, full body burial and cremated remains. The cremated remains interment can be in a wall niche, niches in the Station of the Cross Garden or earthen burial. Families are encouraged to select plots or niches in advance of their need. These may be purchased and reserved in advance. The pre-selection helps to assure that the wishes of the deceased can be carried out and reduces the stress on the family members at the time of a loss. This is especially true if the loss of a loved one occurs during the wet, cold stormy seasons. Most families choose grave markers that are flat and at grass level. However, monuments and other above ground markers are permitted in one section of the cemetery. The cemetery is open each day and you are invited at your convenience to view the site or offer a prayer for a deceased family member. Gates are open from 8:00AM until dusk in the winter and 8:00AM until 8:00PM during the summer. To select a plot, niche or grave marker, call St. Anthony Parish Office at or our cemetery director - Jim Haberski at to arrange an appointment to visit the cemetery and make your selection.

14 Preparing Children for Funerals Often people want to protect children from the harsh reality of death. Yet, the child is part of the family for whom death causes a major change in their lives. So children should be drawn into the discussions regarding the death and funeral planning. Adults often resist allowing children into this conversation because adults fear not being able to answer children s questions. But experts recommend this involvement to help both adults and children with their grieving. Communication about death is easier when a child feels that he or she has our permission to talk about a subject that is often not talked about, especially with children. We must deal with the inescapable fact of death, and so must our children. If we wish to help them, we must let them know that it is okay to talk about it. In fact, any discussion with the children will also aid adults in their own grief process. Death should be explained to a child as simply and directly as possible by someone very close. But even more importantly it is necessary to listen to the child and to consider the child s feelings about this particular death or about death in general. Adults need to realize that the child s understanding of death always depends upon his or her age, maturity and intelligence. Younger children from ages three to five usually know very little, if anything about death. But since they are curious, they can have many questions that should be answered as simply and directly and truthfully as possible, especially without suggesting that death is reversible or has not really happened. Children from ages five to nine have begun to understand that death is final, and their questions can often be harder to answer. But again, direct and truthful answers will help them confront reality of death and cope with their own grief. Older children, ten through teenage years, might recognize death s inevitability and also realize it could happen to them. Anger and guilt feelings can also occur in relation to death, especially one within their family, friends or peer group. It is important to communicate that they are in no way responsible for the death.

15 When a death occurs, the children should be given the news in a way that gives them time to ask questions and includes them in the emotional experience of the whole family. They are an important part of the family and should be included when the family celebrates and grieves together. Whether or not a particular child should be included in the funeral depends upon the child and the situation. If he or she is asking questions about death, then they are probably old enough to be present at all the events of the wake and funeral. If the child is old enough to understand and wants to participate, being included may help accept the reality of death and offer a way to express grief in the company of family and friends. If a child prefers not to attend the funeral, it is not wise for the child to be coerced or made to feel guilty. If a child is to attend a funeral, preparation should be given beforehand about what will be seen and heard before, during and after the service. The child should be aware that on such a sad occasion people will be expressing their sorrow in various ways and some will be crying. If children need more assistance in answering their questions, funeral directors and churches often have resources that can be used to help children understand and cope with their experience of death.

16 Psalm 23 1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, [a] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
