Colour Theory, Colour Mixing, and the Colour Wheel The Colour wheel offers the easiest way to visualise how hues relate to each other. Traditionally designers have defined red, yellow and blue as the three primary colours from which all others on the wheel can be mixed. Although this is technically true, a designer can't actually derive a pure green or purple from the primaries the intensity of the mixed colour won't equal that of the parents. For decorating decisions, however, you need only be aware that purple relates to both red and blue and that green derives from yellow and blue. Those relationships mean the colours will harmonise with each other.
The Colour Wheel PRIMARY TERTIARY TERTIARY SECONDARY SECONDARY TERTIARY TERTIARY PRIMARY PRIMARY TERTIARY TERTIARY SECONDARY
Primary Primary colours are those that cannot be made from mixing other colours. Instead, primary colors are the source of other colors. The primary colours are red, blue, and yellow. Mixing red and blue makes violet, while mixing red and yellow makes orange. Mixing yellow and blue results in green. Usually primary colours are too strong to be used full strength in a colour scheme, but as an accent, they can be striking.
Secondary Colours Secondary colours are made by mixing equal parts of primary colours. For instance, green is a secondary colour made by mixing yellow and blue. Orange comes from mixing red and yellow. Violet results from mixing blue and red. These colours are less strong than primaries, but they are more pleasing when mixed with white to make a tint.
Monochromatic This is the easiest colour scheme to create. Choose any shade, tint or tone of one colour, for example violets to create a simple colour palette based on the lighter or darker variations of violet. You could also add neutral colours such as white and grey for extra visual interest.
Analogous This approach is useful when you want to combine colours together. The idea is to mix either a primary or secondary colour with one or two tertiary colours. Simply choose two or three colours lying next to each other on the colour wheel. For example combine blues with blue-greens and blue-violets. The colour effect could be subtle or striking depending on the shades, tints or tones you choose.
Complementary Here you could create a colour scheme with the greatest colour contrasts. Choose two colours that lie opposite to each other on the colour wheel such as blues and oranges as the main colours in your colour scheme. The result could be a vivid clash of tones, full of energy and uplift, depending on the strength of colours chosen.
Split Complementary Split complementary colours are the two colours adjacent to the complementary colour. This means, if red is the complement of green on the colour wheel, red-violet and red-orange along with green will make the split complementary colour scheme.
Intermediate Intermediate Colours Also known as Tertiary colours, are produced by mixing unequal amounts of two primary colours. Intermediate colours are located between the primary and secondary colours on a colour wheel
What Colours symbolise The meaning of colours can vary depending on culture and circumstances. Each colour has many aspects to it. Colour is a form of non verbal communication. Image: special thanks to Pantone
Reds / Red-oranges / Oranges Red has more symbolism than any other colour. For early man it was the colour of blood and fire, for the ancient Greeks the token of love. It is the colour of romantics and extroverts, universally associated with danger, emotion and heat. It is an advancing colour: it will make a room look smaller, but also cosy and inviting. It is dramatic on feature walls. Traditionally red was used in dining rooms and picture galleries. More recently it has come into favour as an accent against shades of white and grey. Orange is a sociable colour, it can be both restful and stimulating at the same time. It encompasses the palette of fruit and spices, from pale apricot to deepest paprika. When diluted to a soft peach tone it has proved extremely popular. Amber and terracotta work well as warm, earthy colours in kitchens and living spaces.
Yellows In many Eastern religions, golden yellow is a sacred colour. It is a symbol of creation, sun and light. It has been used throughout history to represent power and glory. Deep yellow is the colour of intellectuals and idealists. Sandy golds and ochres have become popular in recent years as more complex, richer shades of strong Mediterranean yellow. Yellow is an optimistic colour. It is the colour of sunshine, flowers and fruits. It suggests summer days and sandy beaches. Always bright and positive citrus yellows will brighten a room and provide a playful and fresh feel, while softer creamy yellow tones provide warmth and relaxation. Yellow stimulates mental and physical energy and works to positive effect in offices, kitchens and living rooms
Greens A colour inextricably linked to nature. It evokes lush grass, verdant forests and dewy leaves. It has come to symbolise the environment. It is a restful colour, a balance between opposing red and blue both of which it works dramatically with. With its cool, fresh tones, green makes a popular ambience for relaxing and dining. Our Liberty range range has a beautiful palette of greens inspired by their classic floral Art Fabrics
Blue-Greens / Blues / Blue-violets Turquoise and aquamarine are cool, passive colours. Egyptian temples had blue ceilings decorated with stars and green floors to evoke the banks of the Nile. Nowadays aqua hues are matched with neutrals and blue greys to create calm living spaces. Blue is the colour of sky, water and ice, of the Mediterranean and the Arctic. Once the most highly-valued pigment was Ultramarine from the semi-precious stone Lapis Lazuli. Tranquil and spiritual, blue is a receding colour which makes rooms seem bigger. Its watery connotation have made blue popular in bathrooms, but it also has a meditative, reflective feel
Purple / Violets Purple was the choice of Roman emperors. Its rich, velvety tones were difficult to synthesise from nature and give it a regal cachet. The colour of the philosopher, the dreamer and the visionary, purple combines the two extremes of the spectrum, red and blue. Light purple and lilac are easier to use in a contemporary setting. They are space-enhancing, light-providing colours which combine well with pinks, as well as whites and greens. Lilac is a colour that shifts with the light, from soft silvery grey to pale blue. It is ideal for rooms flooded with strong natural daylight.
Neutrals The most popular and versatile colours of all, neutrals provide an easy to live with backdrop. They are especially useful for creating a sense of space, to enlarge and brighten small rooms. A white ceiling will reflect up to fifteen percent more light than a tinted one. Create drama with an accent colour on one wall. Alternatively, combine a satisfying, subtle palette of greys, taupes and creams. Greys are extremely popular with architects and interior designers. Our Nantucket Trading Company neutrals range is inspired by this beautiful Atlantic island

About our unique colour testing system: The ipatch The innovative ipatch is a world first in home colour testing. The ipatch is a sheet of real paint with a low-tack backing that can be fixed and peeled off numerous times without cracking, flaking or losing adhesion. Its smart design means it does not cause damage or leave marks, yet it can be applied to multiple surfaces, including walls, picture & dado rails, skirting boards and architraves. Easily portable, the ipatch makes comparing paint colours in shops with fabrics, cushions, furniture and accessories, in store, effortless. The ipatch eliminates the need for tester pots, which are time-consuming to apply, create an unsightly after-effect, and are a real nuisance to paint over. Each ipatch is made to order to ensure an exact colour match. Watch the video of the ipatch in action AVAILABLE ONLY IN THE UK & NORTHERN IRELAND
