3 Introduction OCR recognises that the teaching of Functional English will vary greatly from school to school and from teacher to teacher. With that in mind the teaching and learning activities offer several possible approaches but will be subject to modifications by the individual teacher. When undertaking a scenario, use the skills starters to determine how well your learners understand and can apply the skills standards. Please note that within this model, the focus is on applying the skills, rather than on learning the skills required, for speaking, listening and communication, reading and writing. For this reason, each element of the scenario (particularly the starter, reflection and revision sections) should be able to be disaggregated and used as standalone activities. Opportunities for assessment are built into each scenario, look at the skills standards for pointers. Functional Skills English Entry 1 Choosing a holiday 3
4 Teachers Guidance Entry 1 Context: Choosing a holiday This context is very familiar and accessible to the learner. The English demanded by the situation is simple, clear and routine. The techniques and procedures required are specific to the problem. The tutor needs to offer a very high level of guidance and direction to the learners. Throughout the unit, learners are encouraged to consider how these skills might be applied in different contexts and situations. General scenario Choosing a holiday Mel wants to go on holiday with her friend. They need to decide what holidays they like and then choose a holiday. Starter activities Introduction Starters introduce learners to some of the skills required in the activities. All resource sheets are samples and may be adapted. Speaking, listening and communication starter Learners will need to be able to: understand instructions or short explanations ask simple questions to obtain information make contributions to be understood respond appropriately to comments and requests. The following activities will help learners to apply these skills. Starter SLC activity 1 - see resource sheet 1 Learners work in pairs, with the tutor or another learner. Learners are given word cards and take it in turns to select a card which will have a word to do with holidays. 1. The learner has to read the word to the other learner[s] 2. The learner then has to say two things about the word on the card. Starter SLC activity 2 - see resource sheet 1 Learners work in pairs, with the tutor or another learner. Learners are given word cards and take it in turns to select a card which will have a word to do with parties. 1. The learner has to read the word to his/her partner. 2. The learner then asks his/her partner a question to do with the word. 4 Functional Skills English Entry 1 Choosing a holiday

Reading starter Learners will need to be able to: read and understand simple regular words and sentences understand short texts on familiar topics and experiences. The following activities will help learners to apply these skills. Starter reading activity 1 see resource sheet 2 In groups or pairs, look at the adverts for holidays. The tutor will ask the learner questions about different types of holidays, using the prompt sheet. The questions can be adapted to suit the learner s interests and personal situation. This is the criteria the candidate is expected to meet: Understand the main points of short explanations Understand and follow instructions Respond appropriately to comments and requests Make contributions to be understood Ask simple questions to obtain specific information Possible prompts to encourage learners to talk about holidays: Tell me about a good holiday you have been on recently Tell me about the sort of holiday you enjoy Are there any types of holiday that you do not like?
