1 Dana Point Yacht Club Junior Summer Sailing Program 2014 Information Packet The DPYC Junior Program develops knowledgeable and capable youth sailors and instills in them a passion for the sport of sailing, which will lay the foundation for the future of Dana Point Yacht Club and the sport of sailing. Dana Point Yacht Club s Junior Sailing Program is a non-profit endeavor that sponsors and instructs youth sailing in and around Dana Point Harbor. Participating children will learn to sail and will have a lot of fun doing it! The DPYC Junior Sailing Program serves all of Dana Point Harbor and surrounding South Orange County communities. We work with Dana Point Youth Charitable Foundation to maintain one of the largest fleets of foundation-owned Naples Sabots, Lasers, Collegiate Flying Juniors, and 420s in Southern California. Our students range from first-time beginners to sailors seeking collegepreparatory racing instruction. Basic sailing skills are incorporated into fun activities, such as sailing sponge-tag, scavenger hunts, sailing to the West Basin Sand Bar, and double-handed sailing. Advanced students are given the opportunity to improve their sailing skills and racing strategy. Students are encouraged to travel and represent Team Dana Point racing team at out-of-harbor events such as Jr. Sabot Nationals and the Dutch Shoe Marathon. Our goal is for all students to develop solid sailing skills, seamanship, water-safety skills, and sportsmanship. The DPYC junior sailing program builds a foundation for a wonderful sport that students can enjoy throughout their whole lives. Summer Program Overview Our summer program is a six-week program comprised of three two-week sessions. Students may do any or all of the sessions, although most do two or three sessions.
2 Each session is independent of the other, so enrollment in the first session is NOT a prerequisite for enrolling in the second or third sessions. Students may graduate to more difficult classes with each new session, if they qualify for the desired level. The program is open to children from age eight to eighteen and participants are not required to be current members of Dana Point Yacht Club. Sailing instruction is done in Sabots, Lasers, CFJs and 420s depending on a student s age and skill level. All juniors will be required to pass a swim test on their first day. The test consists of swimming laps at the DPYC guest dock, treading water, and putting on a Coast Guard approved life jacket while in the water. Course Levels Beginning Sabot (Level 1): GREEN The beginning Sabot class teaches children to captain their own boat on the water while under supervision. Lessons will cover safety, boat nomenclature, knots, rigging, points of sail, ocean awareness and fundamentals of sailing. This level is taught in Naples Sabots. It is not uncommon for a student to take the Beginner Level more than once. Beginning Sabot (Level 2): YELLOW This is for juniors who may have sailed in the program before, or who have some previous knowledge of sailing Naples Sabots, but who are still working on commanding their sabot independently. Emphasis is on getting out of irons, points of sail, jibing in breeze, rules of the road, and basic racing. Intermediate Sabot (Level 3): RED This class is for juniors who have confidence in basic sailing, can sail all points of sail independently in light and moderate breeze, and may be ready to start racing. Lessons cover racing fundamentals, sail trim, and racing rules, with continued emphasis on small boat handling and safety. Level 2 racers are encouraged (but not required) to compete in the San Diego Harbor Dutch Shoe Marathon and the Long Beach Harbor Beach To Bay race. Level 2 sailors are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to own their own sabot. Advanced Sabot (Level 4): BLUE This level is for sailors with solid sailing skills interested in competitive sabot sailing. This program emphasizes the many aspects of one design racing including advanced racing tactics, strategy, racing rules, advanced
3 starting techniques, and good sportsmanship. Preparing for Junior Sabot Nationals is a major goal of this class. Level 3 Sabot sailors are REQUIRED to own their own competitive sabot. Advanced Dinghy: Laser, CFJ, 420 (Level 5) This level is for sailors who are competent sailors interested in exploring and/or racing other boats. Instruction will be focused on racing, sailing with a spinnaker, double handed sailing, etc. Sailors must be responsible and trustworthy to be given care of larger boats. Please contact the Junior Director about the sailor s personal sailing goals. Schedule The summer program is held from June 30 to August 7, Classes are held Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. The program officially begins at 9:00am though students may show up as early as 8:30am but no earlier. Supervision is not provided prior to 8:30am. Upon arrival students stow their gear in their locker and immediately begin rigging. All boats should be rigged by 9:30. If your child requires additional time, please plan accordingly. Pick up time is 4:00. Please do not cause the coaches to have to stay late to wait for you. The parent or guardian must sign IN and OUT their junior, and if there is a change in plans (Uncle Bob to pick up the kids), please let a coach know. Typical Day Schedule: 8:45-9:00 Arrive, sign in, stow gear, begin rigging 9:00-9:30 Rig boat 9:30-10:00 Chalk talk, sunscreen, water 10:00-12:00 Sailing 12:00-1:00 Lunch 1:00-3:00 Sailing 3:00-3:15 Debrief 3:15-4:00 Derigging 4:00 Sign out & Pick up Generally, students will be on the water for 2 hours in the morning, break for lunch, and sail for a few more hours in the afternoon. 8 Racing Information Summer Program Regattas There are several great regattas during the summer program for all skill levels from the beginning to advanced racer. Some are great first-time regattas while others require a few years of experience. Beach to Bay The Jessica Uniack Memorial Race is a fun point-to-point race in Long Beach that begins at Shoreline Beach (near the aquarium) and ends at Long Beach Yacht Club. Sabots, FJs, & Lasers may compete. It is a great beginning race, as most of the race is a usually a reach. Takes place on a Thursday, and is typically our most popular summer race. Dutch Shoe Another great point to point race, only for sabots, that takes racers on a scenic course through San Diego Harbor. Starts at San Diego Yacht Club and ends at Coronado Yacht Club. This is a time-honored marathon of sabot sailors young and young-at-heart, often drawing more than 200 sabots out on the water. Sabot II Specifically for sabot sailors 11 years old and younger. There is a North and South Division; we usually participate in the North Division held in Long Beach. All Girls Regatta Held at Lido Isle Yacht Club in Newport, a fun but competitive regatta for the ladies. Whether they want to sail a Sabot, Laser, or FJ, Lido Isle always puts on an awesome regatta. Note that this regatta is on a weekend (not during program hours). Team Dana Point In addition to the summer regattas, some DPYC Juniors compete in regattas year-round throughout southern California and beyond. For those interested in serious competition, we have created Team Dana Point a racing team comprised of sailors from Dana Point dedicated to representing our harbor. They will have the opportunity to receive world-class coaching and to compete in many additional regattas including but not limited to:
9 -Jeff Adam DPYC (March) -Charity DWYC (June) -Tuesday Night Soda Dana Point Harbor (Summer) -Thursday Night DPYC (Summer) -Sabot Nationals (August) -Richard Henry Dana DPYC (September) -Halloween LIYC -Gold Cups (Spring, Summer, NHYC -Thanksgiving ABYC (November) Additionally, some of our best sailors have gone on to compete in regattas such as the Koch International Cup, Olsen 30 Nationals, and 29er Worlds in Italy. If interested, please contact the Junior Director about the sailor s specific goals.
