Explore using your child s passions as themes to frame your play Learn ways to incorporate semi-structured interactions for your child who may have motor and communication challenges. Learn to use pretend play as a way for your older child to experience different social interactions and emotions Experience growth in your child s flexibility and thinking as you nurture his ideas through pretend play Practice breaking out of scripts and accepting other s ideas in play Toolbox Strategies Set the Stage Be Present and Flexible Emotional Expression Tailor to Individual Differences Enhance Non- Verbal Communication Extend Circles Encourage Problem Solving Nurture Ideas 1

2 Welcome! In the last webcast you learned how to help your child build a symbolic world in which to explore his own ideas through the magic of pretend play! Now we will take a look at some adolescents and young adults who still need play in order to... Welcome! Develop the ability to think and move in meaningful interactions Understand that they can be intentional and powerful in play Expand their ability to problem solving, expand ideas and use new ideas Become more flexible in play and work through their emotions Broaden their understanding of social themes decreasing rule-based thinking (black and white thinking) Meanings All the Meanings from Webcasts 31 & 32 in your workbook also apply to this Webcast Rule-based thinking (black and white thinking): A person s inability to see variations in an idea or something has to happen the same way every time. Rule-based thinkers have difficulty seeing the gray such as there may be some good and some bad qualities about something or someone or that things can be done in a variety of ways 2

3 Questions to consider... Is my child s play environment set up for pretend play? Would semi structured interactions be helpful? Does my child need help getting the play started? If so, what passions can I use to frame our play? Do I need to demonstrate what to do or even physically support my child to help him join? Are we playful? Am I following my child s idea? Questions to consider Am I able to stay calm and playful if my child gets upset? How do I help my child stay regulated through our play? Am I asking too many questions? Is my pacing and use of pauses allowing my child to join and contribute to the play? Am I able to help my child expand on her ideas and accept my ideas in play? Idea 1 Help your child become a Player Even if he/she has motor challenges! 3

4 Strategies Presume competence and believe that your child can enjoy play Use your child s interests and passions to create a story for your play If your child has difficulty acting on his/her intent, use drama, demonstrate what to do and even physical support as needed to help him follow through Be silly, do the unexpected, have fun and persist! Pause and Reflect (Video 1: Jimmy the Pirate) How did the idea of presume competence and use of Jimmy s passions influence our play theme? Which strategies helped Jimmy join the interaction and feel success? Playfulness? Persisting? Emotional expression? Motor support? Idea 2 Use Play to Expand Thinking 4

5 Strategies Use pretend play to build your child s ideas Use familiar scripts as a frame for play that entices your child to join Embrace a pretend role and stay in character (voice, actions, emotional expression)! Create simple problems in play that require your child to think differently-break the Script! Strategies Ask questions and present problems that don t have one right answer Celebrate and act on his new ideas The best ideas are the ones you didn t see coming! Which strategies helped support Eric s generation of new ideas?: Embracing a role and staying character? Using drama? Inserting simple problems? Responding to his ideas? Were there any surprises? 5
