5 How? A direct blow to the head or an impact to the body causing a sudden severe movement to the head Sean Hagwell, 2010

6 Early Symptoms Headache Dizziness Problem with vision Nausea or vomiting Ringing in ears Bothered by light Confusion Don t feel right

7 Why worry about concussions? 1. 15% of concussions are long and and may never get better without treatment 2. Getting a concussion while concussed is much worse than two concussions 3. Death is possible, but fortunately rare 4. The next concussion may have more symptoms and last longer 5. Role of concussion in head injury associated dementia (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) is unclear at this time

13 Body checking For peewee players, each season With body checking 1 in 5 will be injured (3 injuries per team) 1 in 15 will be concussed (~1 per team) Without body checking 1 in 15 will be injured (~1 per team) 1 in 53 will be concussed (1 team every 3y)

14 Body checking harms kids For each hockey age group that moves from body checking to body contact: There will be at least 1000 concussions prevented each year across Canada There will be at least 40 concussions prevented each year in Nova Scotia Eliminating body checking from youth hockey is a recognized and effective brain injury prevention

16 Common Concussion Symptoms PHYSICAL Headache Dizziness Balance problems Nausea/vomiting Fatigue Sensitivity to light Sensitivity to noise THINKING Feeling mentally foggy Feeling slowed down Difficulty concentrating Difficulty remembering Difficulty focusing EMOTIONAL Irritability Sadness Nervousness More emotional than usual SLEEP Trouble falling asleep Sleeping more than usual Sleeping less than usual

17 In summary The brains of young hockey players are still developing The brains of young hockey players are more vulnerable to concussion than the brains of adults Symptoms of concussion disrupt school performance and affect social/emotional functioning Kids and teens with common pre-existing conditions are at particular risk for complicated recoveries and long term consequences, for example: ADHD Learning disabilities Anxiety Depression Headaches
