1 PUBLIC SPEAKING SAMPLE PREPARATION FORMAT Topic: Topic Statement: MAIN POINTS A speech should contain 2-4 main points to be discussed. Each main point must be supported by facts, opinions, anecdote or examples. Main Point #1 Main Point #2 Main Point #3

3 What is a speech? There are five essential components in Public Speaking: determining exactly what should be said; arranging the material in the proper order; clothing the speech in well-chosen words and carefully phrased sentences; delivering it with dignity and grace. Types of speeches The Informative Speech This type of speech tells an audience about some fact, finding or experience. The emphasis is on the desire the share information. The Humorous Speech The purpose of this speech is to make an audience laugh by telling light-hearted or funny stories. The Persuasive Speech The persuasive speech is one that tells an audience about certain objects, things, or ideas and presents them in such a way that the audience will agree with the ideas presented. Speech Preparation Choose a Topic should be of interest to the speaker and the audience; should be specific not too broad, or too narrow; should be completely thought through to formulate ideas; should consider personal strengths and limitations; should choose a medium of delivery that you can handle. Gather Information set the purpose of the presentation; identify the main points to be presented; use these main ideas as reference points for researching and organizing information.
4 DELIVERY OF A SPEECH The delivery of a speech is the culmination of the thought, research and preparation by the student. Appearance and Poise walk to the front of the audience smartly stand in a natural way at ease keep body alert and alive keep weight distributed on both feet avoid shifting from one foot to another feet should be apart, slightly angled from front to back good posture and relaxing body muscles will improve voice don t lean on object don t fidget with paper of cloth wait for silence before beginning smile at audience before speaking to establish rapport establish visual contact with the entire audience avoid looking at the floor or ceiling Enunciation and Volume speak clearly and distinctly voice should be pleasant and natural; loud enough to be heard but not shouting volume, pitch and rate should be varied according to material presented emphasize important words don t mumble or rush, pace is very important listen to yourself, do you sound bored? tired? enthusiastic?
5 WRITING A SPEECH First Draft Introduction: an enthusiastic opening statement will stimulate the audience promotes receptiveness of audience to the speaker gives the audience a focus, a theme, a perspective provides direction to your talk can be written after the body of the speech has been developed **do not begin you speech with, Hi, I am and today I am going to talk about. use a smooth transition to move from your intro into the body of your speech The Body the substance of the speech tells the audience what the speaker wants them to know a point should be made to provide a focus and direction for the talk provide the background information necessary to appreciate your talk avoid verbal clutter the more vivid the imagery, the better the audience relates to the talk let your audience see with your eyes, relive your experience use language appropriate to your audience use a smooth transition to move from the body of your speech into the conclusion The Conclusion short used to re-emphasize or summarize main points should leave an impression on the audience the speaker and the audience need to smoothly close the communication **never end with That s it or The End.. tie it back to the introduction s attention grabber Edit work is refined special consideration given to clearness of expression gives style to the work adds effectiveness to the wording and phrasing use the writing process encourage peer editing Final Copy words are removed which are hard to pronounce or difficult to understand Final Note The more thought and preparation that is put into a talk, the more enthusiastically it can be delivered. An audience appreciates a speaker who is original and unique. Don t try to imitate anyone else. Believe in yourself. Be yourself.

Students are to prepare speeches that will be presented in class at a later date. Winners will be chosen from each grade to speak at the BTOC School Finals to be held on, Two students from each grade will be selected to go on to represent BTOC at the system regional finals to be held at 6:30 p.m. on at. We ask the students to choose a topic they know well and confirm it with their teacher. We will provide a list of suggested topics for your child. The topics will vary depending on the age of the student. The speech should be 3-5 minutes in length for most of the students. However, if English is a second language, we will modify the time. Each student is required to memorize the speech if possible, while referring to cue cards from time to time. Although the student should do most of the work, guidance is encouraged from the parent(s). We will allot time in the classroom for preparation of speeches.
