1 Introducing New Perennials for 2015 Achillea (Yarrow) Achillea Desert Eve Terracotta, Achillea New Vintage Rose, Achillea New Vintage Violet Yarrow is an easy perennial, growing in nearly any sunny situation, even where there is poor soil. Desert Eve Terracotta has deep green foliage and lovely terracotta umbels tall. The New Vintage collection is a series that was developed for use in gardens and containers. These compact cultivars feature bold color that doesn't fade, with no gap between foliage and flowers tall and wide. Zone 4. New Vintage Rose is a lovely rose-pink and New Vintage Violet has magenta-violet blooms. Little Adder Agastache (Hyssop) Agastache rugosa Little Adder This compact variety has lavender-blue blooms, providing ample flower power late spring through early fall. Excellent for cutting and in mixed containers. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds " tall. Zone 5. Summer Beauty Allium (Nodding Onion) Allium tanguticum Summer Beauty This ornamental onion blooms in the summer after most other alliums are done flowering. Sterile flowers make it easy to mix this drought tolerant perennial into the garden without worry that it will seed everywhere. The 1 1/2 globe shaped, light lavender blooms flower for weeks and attract butterflies to your garden. The red flower stems contrast nicely with the yellow leaves in the fall tall. Zone 4.

2 Sun King Aralia (Golden Japanese Spikenard) Aralia cordata Sun King A tropical looking golden beauty with large compound leaves that get up to 3' long. Sun King emerges mid-spring with bright gold leaves held on reddish brown stems. The leaves will stay yellow if given a few hours of sun a day. If planted in deeper shade, the color will range from chartreuse to lime-green. Tiny white flowers are produced in mid to late summer followed by purplish black inedible berries. 3 tall. Zone 3 Asclepias (Common Milkweed) Asclepias syriaca Not only a source of food for the Monarch, this native plant also attracts other butterflies, moths, fritillaries and bees to your garden. A great plant for our pollinators! Plant this taprooted self seeder where you want it to stay. 4-6 tall. Zone 4. Astilbe (False Spirea) Astilbe Color Flash Lime, Astilbe Elizabeth Van Veen Color Flash Lime s leaves emerge chartreuse and mature to a lime green with a burgundy edge. Narrow light pink flowers will bloom in early summer. Grow in shade to prevent scorching the leaves tall. Zone 3. Elizabeth Van Veen has striking red stems that turn into raspberry purple blooms in early summer tall. Zone 4. Tiny Tortuga Chelone (Turtlehead) Chelone lyonii Tiny Totuga This smaller version of Chelone Hot Lips stands just tall. Tiny Tortuga is deer and disease resistant. Zone 3. Satin & Lace Coreopsis (Tickseed) Coreopsis Satin & Lace Berry Chiffon, Coreopsis Satin & Lace Red Chiffon Hybridizer Darrell Probst has given us Satin & Lace, a new series of thread leaf coreopsis with sterile flowers that is highly resistant to powdery mildew. Berry Chiffon has white blooms with a vibrant raspberry eye. Red Chiffon has yellow blooms with a red eye. As the weather turns colder, the eye extends further across the flower. Both varieties form a nice thick clump of dark green foliage and bloom from mid summer to fall. Attracts butterflies tall. Zone 4.

3 Epimedium (Barrenwort) Epimedium versicolor Sulphureum, Epimedium x Rubrum A perfect groundcover for the shade or woodland garden, Epimedium will tolerate drought once established. Foliage emerges with a reddish tint that turns all green in the heat of the summer and becomes red-tinged when the cooler temps return in the fall. Sulphureum bears small flowers with pale yellow sepals and darker yellow petals mid to late spring. Rubrum has clusters of small red flowers with pink to white spurs. Rubrum received 4 out of 5 stars from the Chicago Botanic Garden Epimedium Evaluation. Deer and rabbit resistant tall. Zone 4. Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) Gaillardia Red Sun, Gaillardia Sun Devil With an upright, mounding habit, vibrant colors and hardiness to zone 3, why wouldn t you want to plant a Gaillardia from the Sun series? Red Sun has hot orange-red blooms floating over 10 tall foliage. Sun Devil is nice compact plant with fluting red petals that are yellow at the tips. Both bloom all season long. Heuchera (Coralbells) Heuchera Bella Notte, Heuchera Berry Smoothie, Heuchera Dolce Brazen Raisin (PW), Heuchera Glitter Bella Notte is a very elegant heuchera that blooms all season with beautiful light pink flowers and lush dark foliage. 9 tall. Heat tolerant. The foliage of Berry Smoothie emerges rose pink and darkens to purplish rose in the summer. 18 tall. Heat tolerant. Dolce Brazen Raisin is a compact variety from Proven Winners with large dark purplish black leaves and red undersides. Light pink to white blooms in mid summer tall. Glitter has bouquet worthy fuchsia pink flowers that hover above the mirror-bright silver foliage accented with sparkling black veins. 10 tall.

4 Leapfrog Heucherella (Foamybells) Heucherella Leapfrog (PW) This Proven Winner starts out with chartreuse leaves with burgundy centers in the spring and matures to green with purple centers. Ivory, bottlebrush type flowers bloom in late spring. Heat tolerant due to it s villosa parentage tall.. Hibiscus Hibiscus moscheutos Jazzberry Jam, Hibiscus Summerific Cherry Cheesecake (PW) Jazzberry Jam has 9 wide ruffled deep magenta flowers with a red eye. The bright yellow pollen in the center really pops! An indeterminate bloomer, this plant flowers from midsummer to early fall. 4-5 tall. Proven Winners Summerific Cherry Cheesecake has 7-8 wide blooms that are white with a red eye and magenta tips and magenta veining. The Summerific series blooms along the whole stem, not just at the tips unlike many of the older varieties of hibiscus. 4-5 tall. Slovak Prince Iris (German Iris) Iris germanica Slovak Prince This fragrant iris has white standards with a golden picotee edge and violet falls with white veining. Bearded iris make great cut flowers, lasting a week or more after cutting. Attracts hummingbirds and is resistant to deer and rabbits. 33 tall. Zone 3. Contrast in Styles Iris (Siberian Iris) Iris siberica Contrast in Styles Contrast in Styles describes the eye-catching 3-5 blooms of this Iris perfectly. Enjoy the flowers with their wine-purple standards, blue styles and semi-flaring violet falls with white and yellow signals in early summer. The deer, disease and rabbit resistant foliage looks great even without flowers as long as it receives enough water. They are especially striking planted in mass in borders or around ponds. 28 tall. Zone 3.

5 Lilium (Asiatic Lily) Lilium Tiny Dragon, Lilium Tiny Invader Although bred for containers, the compact size of the Tiny lilies are perfect for any size garden. Tiny Dragon is a great intense red and Tiny Invader is bright orange with purple freckles. Blooms in mid summer. Plant masses of the same color for the best effect. Like any Asiatic Lily, the Tiny series prefer well drained soil tall. Zone 2. Purrsian Blue Nepeta (Catmint) Nepeta faassenii Purrsian Blue This compact selection has a tidier habit than older versions. Periwinkle blue flowers start appearing in early summer and continue through early fall. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Deer and rabbit resistant tall. Zone 3. Beauty of Livermore Papaver (Oriental Poppy) Papaver orientale Beauty of Livermore Large scarlet red flowers with a dark center bloom from late spring to early summer. Tends to go dormant after flowering. 30 tall. Zone 3. Nicky Phlox (Garden Phlox) Phlox paniculata Nicky Fragrant, magenta flower top this tall garden phlox in mid to late summer. The strong stems work well for cut flowers. Give this plant plenty of air and don t put it where irrigation will hit it. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. 2-3 tall. Zone 4. Atropurpurea Phlox (Creeping Phlox) Phlox subulata Atropurpurea Perfect for rock gardens and flower borders creeping established plantings of creeping phlox look like carpets of flowers in the spring. Atropurpurea has pink flowers and dark green foliage. Deer resistant. 4-6 tall. Zone 2.

6 Violet Riot (PW) Salvia (Salvia) Salvia Violet Riot (PW) This Proven Winner Salvia has violet-blue flowers that pop against the dark stems. The dense, neat habit and the intense flowers put on a great show, pulling in the butterflies and hummingbirds from late spring to early summer. Deer resistant. 22 tall. Zone 3. Lemonjade (PW) Sedum (Stonecrop) Sedum Lemonjade (PW) Lemonjade is a compact, upright sedum with unique yellow flowers. The seed heads take on a rosy color when the colder weather sets in tall. Zone 3. Thunderhead Sedum (Stonecrop) Sedum Thunderhead As with all Sedum, Thunderhead will be a hit with the bees and butterflies. Gray-green foliage contrasts nicely with the deep rose flower heads in the late summer. Choose a spot with well drained soil to enjoy the long lasting blooms. 27 tall. Zone 4. Silphium perfoliatum (Cup Plant) Silphium perfoliatum Sunflower like yellow flowers top this tall native plant. Its common name refers to the way the very large leaves clasp around the stem, forming a cup that collects rain and dew. Standing 4-8 tall, depending on the soil moisture, the dark green foliage makes a nice back drop for smaller perennials. Attracts birds and butterflies. Zone 3. Jade Peacock (PW) Tiarella (Foam Flower) Tiarella Jade Peacock (PW) This clump forming Proven Winner sports feathery patterned green leaves with a dark center. Light green and red leaves in the spring mature to a jade green and dark purple in the summer. Pink buds open to creamy white flowers in the spring tall. Zone 4.

7 Morning Sun Trollius (Globe Flower) Trollius Morning Sun A compact globe flower, Morning Sun has semi double, golden-orange flowers blooming in mid-summer. Excellent for planting by streams and ponds. 18 tall. Zone 3. Enchanted Indigo (PW) Veronica (Veronica) Veronica Magic Show Enchanted Indigo (PW) This compact veronica blooms early to mid summer with a re-blooming period in early fall. Royal purple flowers stand above the glossy green foliage. A Proven Winner! tall. Zone 4.

8 Daylilys Hemerocallis (Daylily) Hemerocallis Diva s Choice, Hemerocallis Frosted Vintage Ruffles, Hemerocallis Gypsy Caravan, Hemerocallis Janice Brown, Hemerocallis Scottish Fantasy, Hemerocallis When My Sweetheart Returns This rebloomer has huge, 6 flowers in early summer and again in the late summer as temperatures begin to cool. Diva s Choice has bubble gum pink flowers with a ruffled yellow edge and a greenish throat. 24 tall. Frosted Vintage Ruffles is a super bloomer with fragrant creamy yellow flowers blushed with pink and darker pink ruffled edges. A very fragrant rebloomer. 24 tall. Gypsy Caravan is a nocturnal daylily with buff pink, fragrant flowers with a purple eye around the lime-green throat. 32 tall. Janice Brown has 4 ruffled flowers in a baby pink with a raspberry-pink band and a green throat. This heavily budded re-bloomer puts on a great show early to mid summer. 21 tall. Scottish Fantasy produces 5.5 ruffled. coral pink blooms with a yellow watermark and a bright green throat. Blooms mid summer. 28 tall. Part of the Happily Ever Appster series, When My Sweetheart Returns is a uniquely colored re-bloomer. Peachy-yellow flowers with a rose pink eye and a yellow throat bloom from mid-summer to frost tall.

9 Hostas Hosta (Plantain Lily) Hosta Chuch Mouse, Hosta Coast to Coast (PW), Hosta Cool as a Cucumber, Hosta Guardian Angel, Hosta Irish Luck, Hosta Neptune, Hosta Remember Me, Hosta Victory Church Mouse is a sport of Blue Mouse Ears. It forms a miniature clump of wavy bluegreen to green leaves with lavender flowers. 8 tall and 12 wide. Shade zone 3. Coast to Coast (PW) is a giant hosta with leaves that emerge gold in the springtime and mature to a lighter gold in the summer. Its vase like shape and thick leaves give it great slug resistance. 30 tall. Cool as a Cucumber has white leaves edged with a bright green. It starts with an upright habit and matures into an arching shape that cascades to the ground. The flowers are the typical light lavender, but the scapes are a pure white that stands out in the shade. 28 tall. Guardian Angel is a color changing sport of H. Blue Angel. It sports thick blue-green leaves start out with a white center that becomes overlaid with a green mist by summer. Bears white flowers mid summer. 24 tall. Irish Luck is a striking vase shaped hosta with dark green, glossy leaves with deep veins and rippled, pie crust margins. Fragrant lavender flowers tower above the foliage in late summer. Sun tolerant! 18 tall. The narrow, pointed, rippled leaves of H. Neptune emerge a glaucous blue in the spring and mature to a blue-green in the summer. The cascading form is beautifully displayed when planted on a ledge or in a container. Slug resistant. 24 tall. A sport of the lovely H. June, Remember Me emerges bright yellow with a green edge. As the season progresses, the yellow turns to snow-white and the edges to blue-green. 15 tall. The 2015 hosta of the year, Victory may take a little while to reach its mature size, but it is worth the wait! Shiny green leaves with a yellow margin that turns to cream by summer. At almost 3 tall and 4-6 wide, Victory makes a great specimen plant and a good back drop for smaller perennials.

10 Grasses Octoberfest Miscanthus (Maiden Grass) MIscanthus sinensis Octoberfest Miscanthus are perfect as specimen plants, in mass planting, or at the ponds edge. This selection blooms much earlier than the older varieties of Miscanthus making it ideal for northern gardens. Starting out green with a white midrib, the foliage develops deep purple and red highlights in the late summer. Showy burgundy flowers mature into fluffy, tan seed heads in the fall. Deer resistant. 4.5 tall. Zone 5. Blue Heaven Schizachyrium (Little Bluestem) Schizachyrium scoparium Blue Heaven Discovered by Mary Meyer at the University of Minnesota, Blue Heaven has a more upright habit and improved fall color than the species. In the summer, the foliage is a bright steel blue with almost iridescent purple highlights turning to a mix of purple, pink, red, burgundy, blue, and orange in the fall. Deer resistant. Color persists until mid fall tall. Zone 3.
