1 Polk County Public Schools Tobacco Free Environment Policy May 2013
2 Current Policy 3.003D Smoking is Prohibited: In all indoor facilities In all buses and district owned or leased vehicles By any student, with the exception of students at Ridge and Traviss Vocational Centers and the adult and community schools who are 18-years-old or older. Employee smoking on campuses is limited to designated outdoor smoking areas and must be out of the sight of students.
3 June 2, 2011 Florida Clean Indoor Air Act was amended to allow school districts the authority to designate its property as tobacco free.
4 September 2012 NEOLA recommends a Tobacco Free Environment prohibiting the use of tobacco anywhere on the campus of any facility owned or leased or contracted for by the Board, including, but not limited to, practice fields, playgrounds, football fields, baseball fields, softball fields, pool areas, soccer fields, tennis courts, and all open areas.

6 What Would Change? The Board would provide a tobacco-free environment for all students, staff, faculty, school volunteers, contracted vendors and school visitors on its property or at school-sponsored events. The current policy would be expanded from tobacco free enclosed facilities to anywhere on Board owned, leased, or contracted property, including all school buildings, recreational fields, grounds, and all open areas on Board property. In essence, there would be no tobacco use allowed by anyone, any time, anywhere on school board property or at school-sponsored events.

8 What Supports Do We Have? Smoking Cessation Programs FREE, five-week programs provided at worksites and community facilities that include nicotine replacement products at no cost to the participant Florida Quit Line telephonic and web-based counseling services are provided for those who are ready to quit Tobacco Free Partnership of Polk County, Polk County Health Department will provide financial support for signage Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) team can develop public service announcements and coordinate events. American Lung Association provides data information concerning other districts and Florida s anti-tobacco trends.
9 Why Adopt a Tobacco Free Policy? 1. Serves as a positive model for students. 2. Reduces children s observation of tobacco use. 3. Takes a firm District-wide stance against tobacco use. 4. Supports non-use/prevention messages presented in the classroom.
