1 Description TWIN intercom system The TWIN system is a system based on a 2 wire non polarized bus. The power, data and audio signal pass through these 2 wires simultaneously.. To make a duplex audio connection possible it uses an advanced switching system that avoids Larsen effects. This system automatically detects the dominant audio signal from both sides and gives a priority to that signal so only one direction in communication is possible. It is therefore impossible to have communication in both directions at a given point in time. One direction has priority at all time. The advantage to this system lays in the fact that it is less sensitive to background noises during communications (if they don t exceed the speech level) and feedback suppression. It also guarantees secrecy in communication: only one receiving unit can answer to a specific call from the outside unit (digital addressing). INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENTS The system uses a 2 wired bus which has to comply with the following demands: Wire section (in mm) 0,5 0,8 1 1,2 Maximum distance in meter between power supply and door inside unit towards the wire section. Between 0 en 50 m, max 50M Between 51 en 100 m, max 100M Between 101 en 150 m, max. 150M Between 151 en 250 m, max. 250M Remark: In order to avoid bus failures a minimal distance between the bus wires and surrounding high power cables (230V) or neon lamp wiring has to be obtained (20cm). The system contains 3 different modules: 1. The doorphone (normally placed outside in a panel with one or more buttons) «maximum 64 buttons are possible for each system». 2. The interior unit (exists in 2 versions : with handset and hands free) 3. The power supply. Remark : After connecting all the units to the bus and before using the system the bus voltage needs to be checked. When the system is in use it has to be between 21 and 23Vdc. If this voltage is lower than 20Vdc it is useless to try to operate the system.

2 Connecting the buttons (max. 64 buttons possible). Manual wiring: The buttons need to be connected in a matrix towards the doorphone as in the figure above. Each line and colon must be connected to the proper connection on the doorphone unit. Example: button1 is connected to line1( L1) en colon1 (C1), button 2 to line2 (L2) and colon1 (c1) etc. A colon has max. 8 lines connected. TWIN ABTW (rear view) C1 C8 L1 L8

3 Connection PCB: Connecting the buttons can also be done by using the optional connection PCB and cable. Depending on the number of buttons they can be linked together up to 8 pcb s ( max 64 buttons). Each button has his own 2 connection screws. 4 Addressing configuration table for monitors. On each monitor it is possible to program a specific address by means of the jump headers. This 8 bit address must have a value between 0 and 64 (LSB = jumper 8). Example: To set address 38 jumper 3, 6 and 7 has to be placed.

5 Multiple monitors connected in parallel and MASTER/SLAVE configuration. IF you desire to program multiple monitors to the same address it is needed to program one of them as Master and the others as slave units. We don t recommend connecting more than 4 slave units in parallel to one Master unit. The configuration is simple and direct by means of a single jump header JP1 (see picture). Remark: only on ITW or TWIN202 versions. Slave Master (no jumper) Audio level adjustment. Adjusting the audio level has to be done with great care! Adjusting the trimmers on the doorphone (outside unit) has repercussions in the complete system (and to all the inside units). Always adjust the outside unit before making changes to the inside units! Remark: the audio level in the inside monitor has been set in the factory during production. In normal conditions these levels do not need to be adjusted. The audio levels can be adjusted as follows (only if needed): The volume levels of the speaker, microphone and ringing signal can be individually adjusted by means of the 3 trimmers on the backside of the PCB s. 6 Remarks: Regulations below 25% or higher than 75% on the scaling can render the sound priority switching system unstable which can lead to system malfunctions. If the doorphone (outside unit) has a lot of interference from background signals or noise (busy street for example) it is best to adjust the microphone sensitivity to obtain a good sound quality and to avoid unwanted switching during communication. (The system automatically selects the strongest sound source). Mounting a sound screen at both sided of the doorphone can help a lot to avoid unwanted sounds entering the system. Connections. No ringing to be heard when pressing the door button: o Check if the unit is powered correctly, a white LED must be visible inside the audio module (not for the ABTW unit), the voltage in the bus must be higher than 20Vdc. Check fuse F1 in the power supply and replace if needed. o Check if the trimmer «RING» is not at minimum level on the modules (no ringing sound when pushing a door button). About 2 seconds after pressing the door button 2 beeps can be heard, but no ringing and the call is aborted by the system: o The interior phone unit does not exist or does not react. Check if the unside unit is programmed correctly and properly connected to the bus (bus voltage present?).

8 o Check if the inside unit is configured as Master (if only one unit present). Remark : When a button is pressed the illumination (not for the ABTW unit) will dim during a short time if there is a interior unit present who reacts to the call. This can be used as indicator from the outside to see if the inside system responds to the call. The audio level is weak or is interrupted on all the inside units: o Check if the audio levels for speaker and microphone are set correctly (don t touch the inside level regulators at this time!) Adjust the trimmers on the outside doorphone unit to 50% and make slight adjustments if needed (avoid below25% or higher than 75%). The door does not open (relays click is not audible): o Check jumper SW1 position on the power supply module: SW1 at position 1-2 free contact SW1 at position Vac/1A o Check and/or replace F2 fuse in the power supply. o Check the cabling between power module and door lock. o Check the door lock individually from the power supply. The inside unit rings, the communication is cut off after 10 seconds by the system. o The inside unit is configured as slave without a Master, remove jump JP1. Tips and tricks to do a bus check-up : Each unit connected to the bus consumes about 2-4 ma in sleep mode (no call) or +/- 14mA for the unit equipped with a LED. When functional the current rises upto max. 100mA. If for example 5 inside units and 1 doorphone unit (outside) with LED are present on the bus the current that can be measured on the bus close to the power supply is : +/- (5 x 4mA) + 14mA = 34mA. The voltage in the bus must be +/- 22Vdc in sleep mode (no calls). When a call is processed the voltage should never drop lower than 20Vdc. If a connection can not be made we suggest to measure the bus voltage and current trough the bus wires close to the power supply. If no bus voltage is present (or too low): Check the fuses in the power supply. Unscrew he bus wires on the power supply. If the voltage is present on the power supply connectors and higher than 20Vdc you should check the wiring for shorts or the units connected on the bus (overload?).

9 If the bus voltage is too low: Unscrew the bus wires and measure the voltage again, it should be +/- 22Vdc. Measure the current consumption on the bus (too high can cause voltage drop). Check for short circuits or low resistance shorts on the wiring. Check for high resistance serial interruptions on the bus wiring. Check the connected units on the bus If the bus current consumption is too high: Check the wiring for shorts or low resistance shorts. Unscrew the connected units one by one to detect which unit consumes too much current. Remark: Due to the wire section used and the total length of the bus in the system a voltage drop/loss can happen during communication. It is therefore important to use thicker wire section whenever long distances has to be covered by the bus wires ( taking into account the current consummation of about 100mA on 22Vdc. The power supply unit is protected against short circuiting or overload. Mounting prescriptions. To assure a good sound quality we recommend to use the mounting box delivered in the package. This box has been calculated to act as speaker cabinet thus providing a clear and proper sound level. The front cover from the doorphone unit (outside module) is protected against splashing water drops. No further protection is needed for normal use. Take care when making the connections with the bus wiring. Only use screw connectors. (low voltage and currents on the bus only). General remarks: The interior units don t need any adjustment if the audio levels are wel set on the outside doorphone unit (se adjustment procedures above). When an installation holds several inside units and only one or only a few more users complain about poor sound level or quality should you consider to adjust these individual units. (don t touch the outside unit in this case, it will influence the whole system). When adjusting individual inside units, take care with the adjustments made. If not done proper, bad adjustment can lead to unwanted effects (interruptions during communication, noise, bad direction switching, whistling or hum).
