About SAMA and Continued Professional Development SAMA is a non-statutory, professional association for public and private sector medical practitioners. Registered as an independent, non-profit Section 21 company SAMA acts as a trade union for its public sector members and as a champion for doctors and patients. On behalf of its members, the Association strives for a health care dispensation that will best serve their needs. SAMA membership is voluntary, with some 70% of public and private sector doctors in South Africa currently registered as members of SAMA. The SAMA head office is situated in Pretoria, South Africa. A number of years ago, the CPD system was introduced in South Africa by the Health Professions Council of SA. CPD - meaning Continuing Professional Development. Doctors who wished to maintain their Registration with the Council had to upkeep a specific number of CPD points as was instructed by the Council. The purpose of CPD is to assist health professionals to maintain and acquire new and updated levels of knowledge, skills and ethical attitudes that will be of measurable benefit in professional practice and to enhance and promote professional integrity this was taken from the CPD Guideline of the HPCSA. The SA Medical Association is one of the institutions that have been appointed by the Medical and Dental Professions Board of the Health Professions Council of SA to review and approve CPD applications. Being registered with SAMA means: 1. Medical practitioners will want to train in BabyGym (1-day/ 7 hours) to earn 5 CPD points 2. BabyGym Instructors will have the opportunity to earn extra income when presenting BabyGym CPD Training. In order for a Medical professionals to earn points with BabyGym, the format and training offered needs to be uniform: 1. 7 hours of training at R per person 2. Training strictly according to this manual 3. The book brain development MILESTONES and learning serves as a study guide 4. Attendance register has to be submitted to the BabyGym Institute 5. CPD certificates have to be issued by the BabyGym Institute

The purpose of BabyGym is to: a) Relax and unfold the baby s body b) Wake up the senses c) Strengthen the muscles in sequence. 09h20 The physiology of learning and development THE TRIUNE BRAIN & THE LEARNING PROCESS All three layers of the brain are present at birth, but the layers do not develop at the same time or at the same rate. Each layer of the Triune brain has specific functions and characteristics that become apparent during an agedetermined developmental sequence. Babies first unfold physically, then emotionally and socially and then intellectually, reflecting the sequence of brain development in the Triune Brain. Brain development does not, however, happen spontaneously. Movement develops the brain months Survival Brain Physical development 14 months- 3 years Limbic System Emotional development 3-4 years Social development 4-14 years Neo-Cortex Cognitive development The learning process is the sum of three parts: 1. Input via the 6 senses: Touch Sense of balance Smell Taste Hearing Sight The development of the senses occurs in a specific sequence and BabyGym follows that sequence.
3 2. Processing in the brain Repeated stimulation of the senses, brain and muscles is the only way to build and sustain neural networks. 3. Output via the muscles: Mouth Neck Trunk Shoulders Arms Hands Hips Legs Feet
