3 Learning German Language» What are the required language skills? In order to work in Germany as a physician, you will need to proof that you have the adequate knowledge of German language B2 level of general German language + Medical German Language Exam C1. In almost every federal state of Germany you will be required to have a B2 certificate from a recognized language institute and additionally you have to take the Medical German Language Exam C1 (Fachsprachprüfung) at the Chamber of Physicians. The best option to learn German as a foreign language is the Goethe Institute. Goethe Institute has its language schools in different countries worldwide. As a beginner student of German language you have the chance to learn German up to level B2 in an average period of 8 months. But of course how long you will really need, depends on your individual learning language skills.» What if I already have knowledge of the German language? If you already have knowledge of the German language, there are even much better chances to get a job in Germany. In this case we recommend you to attend a course in Germany designed for doctors and medical professionals. This course will provide you with an understanding of the German healthcare system as compared with other countries as well as of the structure and organization of German hospitals. This course will also prepare you for the Medical German Language Exam C1 (Fachsprachprüfung), which you need to pass in order to acquire the medical license. I m sure you can!» How expensive is the Medical German Exam C1 (Fachsprachprüfung)?The costs of the Medical German Language Exam C1 vary between the federal states. Currently you need to pay between 200 and 450 euro per exam. As the costs may change anytime, please contact the relevant provider before you make a decision. Whereas you have to pay the fee each time you repeat the examination.» What is the examination procedure for the Medical German Exam C1 (Fachsprachprüfung)? The examination takes place at the Chamber of Physicians of the Federal State. The procedure lasts 60 minutes and is divided into 3 sections of 20 minutes each: a) Doctor-patient discussion b) Documentation c) Doctor-doctor discussion.

4 German Medical License (Approbation & Berufserlaubnis)» What is the process of applying for the German Medical License? In order to practice medicine or carry out specialized training in Germany, all physicians must be in possession of a valid full or temporary license to practice. The process is as follows: the responsible authorities will assess the equivalence of your qualifications with the corresponding German qualifications within the framework of a licensing procedure. If the relevant authority confirms the equivalence of the foreign diploma and if all the other requirements are met (knowledge of the German language, health requirements, no criminal record, etc.), the applicant is granted the medical license.» I have successfully completed my basic medical training in a member state of the EU/EEA/Switzerland. Will my medical diploma be recognized? A basic medical training completed successfully in a member state of the European Union will be automatically recognized. If all the other requirements are met (knowledge of the German language, health requirements, no criminal record, etc.), the applicant obtains full registration.» I have successfully completed my basic medical training in a country outside of the EU/EEA/Switzerland. Will my diploma be recognized? The responsible registration authority will assess the equivalence of medical diplomas obtained outside of the European Economic Area/Switzerland compared to medical diplomas from Germany. If the registration authority confirms the equivalence of the foreign diploma and if all the other requirements are met (knowledge of the German language, health requirements, no criminal record, etc.), the applicant is granted full registration. If the registration authority finds that there are significant differences in the training, it may insist on taking of an examination - knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). The assessment of equivalence and the evaluation of professional experience is a case-by-case review conducted by the responsible registration authority. For more information contact us at: mog@mcm-web.de» What is the Knowledge Test - Kenntnisprüfung? The knowledge test refers to the substance of basic medical training in Germany. The foreign physician is to demonstrate that he has the knowledge equivalent to the one required by graduates of the medical universities in Germany. The emphasis of the knowledge test lays on internal medicine and surgery. In addition, questions from the following fields have to be expected: accident & emergency medicine, clinical pharmacology/pharmacotherapy, diagnostic imaging, radiation protection, law on professional practice. Furthermore, the competent authority can inform the candidate in advance that another subject or cross-section will be part of the knowledge test if the authority is of the opinion that there is a major difference in the basic medical training in Germany and in the basic medical training which the examinee underwent. The knowledge test is a clinical-practical test with patient presentation. It takes between 60 and 90 minutes and can be repeated two times at the most.the costs of the knowledge test vary between the German states. Currently you need to pay between 75 and 1,100.

5 German Medical License (Approbation & Berufserlaubnis)» What is the difference between Approbation and Berufserlaubnis? The full license to practice»approbation«is valid throughout Germany for an unlimited period of time and allows you to take part at the specialty/postgraduate training. Whereas the temporary license is usually issued for a maximum of 2 years and in most of the Federal States the time working with a temporary license is not counted towards the specialty/postgraduate training. Limited registration will be granted to doctors whose basic medical training shows major differences compared to the German basic medical training or in cases where the assessment of the basic medical training is still in progress. The main purpose of limited registration is the preparation of the knowledge test. The granting or extension over the period of two years is possible only in individual cases.» What are the responsible authorities for granting the German Medical License (Approbation & Berufserlaubnis) and how can I contact them? In each Federal State in Germany there is an authority responsible for the granting the German Medical License (Approbation & Berufserlaubnis). You should apply for a medical license, in the federal state where you wish to practice medicine. If you comply with the requirements the process should not take longer than 3 months.» What if I am a medical specialist? If you want to work as a specialist doctor in Germany you need to have your further training qualifications recognized by the respective State Chamber of Physicians (Landesärztekammer). Recognition is based on the further training regulations of the State Chamber of Physicians (Landesärztekammer) in the state where you want to practice. The further training regulations of the State Chamber of Physicians are largely identical throughout Germany. You can apply for recognition of your title as a specialist doctor in Germany even if you have completed your training as a specialist abroad. You can only be granted recognition if your training as a specialist doctor is recognized as being equivalent to the corresponding German qualifications.

6 How can I apply? In your CV, you describe your personal and professional career so far. CV does not have to be written out in full: you can list the relevant information in a chart. Previously in Germany, applicants were expected to include a photo of themselves in their CV. However, depending on the company this is no longer necessarily the case. As a rule, German CVs are not written in strict chronological order. However, the most recent professional experiences are usually placed at the beginning. Divide your CV up into the following categories: Personal details: name, address, contact details Professional experience: what companies have you already worked for? What did your work there consist of? You should list this information in chronological order. Start with your most recent professional experience. Education: which schools and universities did you attend? What were your final grades? Which subjects did you study? Did you complete a vocational training course? Or, have you attended any further education courses? You should list this section chronologically too, with the most recent qualification first and your school education at the end. Language skills: what languages do you speak? How well do you speak them? In Germany, the following terms are often used to describe this: Muttersprache, or native language; verhandlungssicher or fluent for business purposes (excellent skills); fließend, meaning you speak the language fluently (sound knowledge of the language); and Grundkenntnisse, or basic skills (beginner). However, it is more advisable to refer to the standards of the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (CEFR). Special aptitudes and interests: For example, do you have any special computer skills that are important for your work? And what are your hobbies?» How can I provide my personal European CV easily? on the official site of the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training: What about my certificates? Finally, add your most important certificates to your application. These are certificates obtained during your vocational training, as well as your school-leaving certificate* and university degrees. If you have any references from previous employers, include those, too. Do not send any originals, only copies due to that documents often are not returned. Previously an ordinary photocopy will do. Officially certified copies are necessary to get the state license and let your professional qualifications recognized by the official bords. Important: it is advisable to get your certificates translated into German or English so that the company can understand your qualifications.
