2 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Brother Edward, OP Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King This Sunday is the feast of Christ the King and the final Sunday of Ordinary time. This is a rather young feast in the Church, it was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 in his encyclical letter Quas Primas. At that time Europe witnessed the rise of dictatorships that denied the role of faith in the public sector. These dictators often attempted to assert authority over the Church, especially regarding the formation of youth. He wrote that he hoped that the feast would give the faithful strength and courage to let Christ govern their hearts, minds and bodies. (#33) He was most alarmed that many Catholics supported the extreme nationalism that was part of these ideologies. The Second World War ended the power of these dictators but the idea of a totally secular state is an idea that finds expression in various forms even today. When political leaders disregard the religious values of citizens it creates a distrust in their authority. The idea that God is the supreme authority and that all human expressions of authority are subject to him is often viewed as archaic by these leaders. Jesus knew the oppressive nature of secular kings, and in contrast to them, he connected his role as king to humble service, and commanded his followers to be servants as well. (Mark 10:42-45) Christ is the king that gives us true freedom. In other passages of the Scripture, his kingdom is tied to his suffering and death. While Christ is coming to judge the nations, his teachings spell out a kingdom of justice and judgment balanced with radical love, mercy, peace and forgiveness. When we celebrate Christ as King, we are not celebrating an oppressive ruler, but one willing to die for humanity. He instructs us to pray for the coming of the kingdom and that God will be done on earth as it is in heaven. These words point to our mission in the world. As Catholic we believe that our earthly endeavors have a connection to the establishment of God s kingdom. While the fullness of his kingdom will not occur through human activity, it does not diminish the importance of our daily efforts. When we infuse our lives with love, justice and peace we know that the God s will is mysteriously present. When we recognized the universal dignity of all it is a foreshadowing in some way of the age to come. Christ s kingship makes the better ordering of society a vital concern for all Christians. All our efforts, even if less than perfect, will find perfection when the Lord comes. This great feast of the Church that ends Ordinary time is a call to take each moment of our life seriously as we await its fullness on the last day. Join us for our Annual Advent Welcome Festival Sunday, November 27 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM Gather with your parish family in the Friary on Sunday morning and create an Advent Wreath while enjoying special treats to welcome the beginning of Advent. Metal bases, fresh greens, decorations, and candles will be available for purchase. You can also bring your own base to decorate fresh for this Advent season. Metal wreath base, candles, & decorations = $15.00 Candles & decorations = $10.00 Decorations only = $5.00 Candles only = $5.00 The Christmas Star from Afar book will be available for purchase. This annual parish-wide event is sponsored by the Blessed Sacrament School Association of Parents & Teachers.
3 Happy Thanksgiving! Operation Christmas Children The entire school worked together in their FAITH Friends Groups last week to create 33 boxes of school supplies, personal hygiene items, and fun toys! The giving spirit was amazing as the boxes were carefully filled for boys and girls who would otherwise not have a gift to open on Christmas morning! A Note from the piano of Matt Regner Now that the sound system has been in place for a few weeks, I hope that everyone feels as satisfied with the upgrade as I do. Who knew that St. Paul could speak so clearly! As for the fundraiser, we have raised about $13,000 (34%) of our $40,000 goal. If you remember the announcement, however, I had earmarked $10,000 to pay for string and brass players on a more regular basis. So, of the $30,000 we needed for the sound system and signs, we have raised 43% in one month! With Thanksgiving coming up this week, I continue to reflect on your generosity, which has enabled all of us to hear the Word of God more clearly and raise our voices in more joyful praise of our Eternal Father. Thank you! Christmas Tree decorating is being offered by our Youth Ministry Teens for senior parishioners who need a little extra help! Please contact J. Gregory at , x-134 or via at jgregory@blsacrament.org by Friday, December 2nd to be added to the elves to-do list! Attention High Teens! Purchase the gift ($15-25), wrap it, and return it to church no later than Sunday, Dec. 11th by 11 am. It s important that the gifts be returned on time since the deliveries will be made to the families in the early afternoon on Dec. 11th. Monetary donations are also accepted.
