2 A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE OFFICE FOR WORSHIP Each year, the Office for Worship issues Liturgical Notes for the Diocese of Cleveland, which are particular notes on the liturgical year and the calendar. These particular notes do not replace the regional Ordo, but complement it, including information on liturgical celebrations which are specific to our diocese. In the past, these notes have been issued in a table format. This year, we have changed the format of the annual Liturgical Notes, in the hopes of providing more and clearer information to our parishes and diocesan institutions. Two specific elements of the 0 Liturgical Notes for the Diocese of Cleveland which I wish to highlight are:. the use of "infographics". days of liturgical conflicts Infographics Infographics are the use of pictures or icons in order to convey information. Those of you with smartphones are accustomed to the use of icons, but we can see evidence of the usefulness of infographics in other areas of common society as well. In the 0 Liturgical Notes, we employ infographics on each date box, in order to indicate what liturgical celebrations are permitted on that day. The absence of an icon (a blank space is left where the icon would usually be located) means that particular category of liturgical celebration is not permitted on that day. Please reference the symbol key, found on the front cover and on each interior page of the 0 Liturgical Notes, if you have questions on the meaning of a specific infographic icon. Days of Liturgical Conflicts We learn by doing. Nearly two years ago, I first learned about a Note from the SCDW, which offered the guideline that in days of liturgical conflict, whatever is laid down for Evening Prayer should also apply to evening Masses. In light of this new-to-me information, we made diocesan calendar adjustments, and with Bishop Lennon's approval, published our 0 annual Liturgical Notes, with liturgical conflicts noted accordingly. This summer, included in the USCCB May-June Newsletter, I read an article detailing not only the Note, but a more obscure Notitiae, available in Latin only, in which "the Congregation departed from its solution and issued revised criteria," summarized as follows: "In the celebration of Mass, precedence is always to be given to the feast of precept [holy day of obligation], regardless of the ranks of the two consecutive feasts." The Newsletter continues, "every Sunday is observed as "the primordial holy day of obligation" in the universal Church," and thus Saturday evening Masses which anticipate the Sunday celebration are not to be pre-empted by other solemnities. This current edition of our Annual Liturgical Notes, takes this information into account when dealing with days of liturgical conflict. I hope that this revision of diocesan calendaring practices proves to be pastorally helpful. As always, please feel free to contact our office should you have any questions. Thank you. Our diocesan custom is that Marriages Within or Without Mass are Marriage Within Mass may be celebrated. Whenever Marriage Within Mass is celebrated, the Ritual Mass The Celebration of Marriage is used with sacred vestments of the color white or of a festive color. (Order of Celebrating Matrimony, second edition, [hereafter OCM] ) A Marriage during the Mass of the Ritual Masses are connected to the celebration of certain Sacraments or Sacramentals. They are prohibited on Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, on Solemnities, on the days within the Octave of Easter, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day), on Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week, and furthermore due regard is to be had for the norms set out in the ritual books or in the Masses themselves. (GIRM, ) On those days listed in nos. - of the Table of Liturgical Days, the Mass of the Day is used with its own readings, with inclusion of the Nuptial Blessing and, if appropriate, the proper formula for the final blessing. If, however, during Christmas and, the parish community participates in a Sunday Mass during which Marriage is celebrated, the Mass of the Sunday is used. Nevertheless, since a Liturgy of the Word adapted for the celebration of Marriage has a great impact in the handing on of catechesis about the Sacrament itself and about the duties of the spouses, when the Mass For the Celebration of Marriage is not said, one of the readings may be taken from the texts provided for the celebration of Marriage. (OCM, ) Participation in the Rite of Marriage during Mass fulfills the Holy Day obligation (Canon ). Marriage Without Mass may be celebrated. A The Funeral Mass may be celebrated on any day except for solemnities that are holy days of obligation, Holy Thursday, the Easter Triduum, and the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, with due regard also for all the other requirements of the norm of the law. (GIRM 0) Participation at a Funeral Mass fulfills the Sunday or Holy Day obligation. The ministry is lay because it is service done by lay persons. The sacramental basis is the Sacraments of Initiation, not the Sacrament of Ordination. The ministry is ecclesial because it has a place within the community of the Church, whose communion and mission it serves, and because it is submitted to the discernment, authorization, and supervision of the hierarchy. Finally, it is ministry because it is a participation in the threefold ministry of Christ, who is priest, prophet, and king. (Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, USCCB, pp.)
