1 Art Teacher: Katielynn O Toole Grade: 5th Unit Title: Symmetrical Name Design Unit Overview: Students will learn about typography and will explore and create various designs of lettering. Symmetry will be reviewed and students will identify and explain different types of symmetry. Students will practice following written directions for this project. Vocabulary: Typography, symmetry: Reflection-Rotation-Translation, Axis, Contrast, point of symmetry, line of symmetry Lesson #1 Essential Question: How can creativity be used in typography? Objectives: Students will learn about the art of typography and practice creating their own original designs using their names. 1. The teacher will introduce the project and the art of typography. (Prezi presentation on typography and symmetry, examples will be shown) 2. Teacher will demonstrate a few strategies in creating unique lettering. Show teacher example. 3. Students will practice creating their first or last name in a small triangle that will later be repeated in a symmetrical design. Students will explore different possibilities to narrow down their 1 choice. VA5-1.1 Identify the materials, techniques, and processes used in a variety of artworks. VA5-2.1 Select a work of art, analyze its composition, and discuss which elements of art and principles of design are used in the work. Students will fill out a worksheet

2 Lesson #2 Essential Question: What types of symmetry exist? Objectives: Identify types of symmetry and examples from the real world (Leaves, water Reflections, people, etc.) Students will create their own rotation reflection using their name. 1. Review typography. Introduce/review symmetry. 2.Demonstrate how to start the rotation symmetry design. Show directions sheet and explain each step. Students will be able to follow these directions if they forget which step they are on. Explain Rubric and what exceeding standards looks like. 3. Students will finalize their typography design and begin their rotation symmetry using pencils and permanent markers. VA5-1.3 Use a variety of materials, techniques, and processes to create artworks. As students walk out the door, they will give one example of something that is symmetrical. Lesson #3 Essential Question: Why is accuracy and precision important when using symmetry in art? Objectives: Students will finish developing a symmetry design using typography. Students will practice being self-sufficient in following directions and completing their design correctly. 1. Have students turn and talk to a neighbor about essential question. Have each partner take turns in providing the steps for completing the project. Review project steps with the whole class. Demonstrate effective coloring strategies using contrast and patterns. 2.Students will continue working on their symmetry design. If students finish, they may begin coloring. Standard 1: The student will demonstrate competence in the use of ideas, materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual art. Exit Slip, turn and talk

4 Lesson #4 Essential Question: What Elements and principles of design have we applied in this project? Objectives: Students will finish developing a symmetry design using typography. Students will practice being self-sufficient in following directions and completing their design correctly. 1. Go over exit slips from previous lesson. 2. Discuss Essential Question. Have students give one example at a time. 3. Review steps for effective coloring. Students should continue coloring. Standard 1: The student will demonstrate competence in the use of ideas, materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual art. Students will self assess their progress using project Rubric.

(All of the triangle space is filled with letters or shapes) Advanced Evidence of Exceeding Standards Symmetry/Craftsmanship- Name/word has been traced neatly and connects perfectly as it rotates around the design. Paper has been folded accurately. (8 even triangle shapes) Color- Entire paper is covered with color (No white spaces showing) Contrast is used in coloring.
