Alternative techniques From the Saskatchewan Conservation House to the Toller House with some R2000 thrown in along the way

Insanity. Continuing to do things the same, and expecting a different outcome

Insanity.. Building California style housing on a subarctic plain. like Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Conservation House was built in 1977 was one of the first energy conservation demo houses in North America. Over 30,000 people toured the two-storey structure; cubicle in shape, airtight, and equipped with a heat recycling system. It had no furnace; instead, the house was heated with a solar heating system designed specifically for Saskatchewan s extreme climate.

Innovative Features of the Saskatchewan Conservation House 1. High Insulation levels: Attic R60 cellulose insulation Walls R 44 3 layers of glass fiber batts Floor R 30 in joist cavity using cellulose insulation 2. First plastic surface air to air heat exchanger in Canada 3. Insulating shutters on most of the windows 4. Gray water heat exchanger 5. Vacuum tube solar collectors with a 2900 US gallon insulated storage tank to store heat 6. Very well sealed building. roof, walls and floor (0.8 air changes per hour at 50 pascals)

Canadian Building Digest UDC March 1976 (excerpt) Vapour Barriers: What are They? Are They Effective? J.K. Latta It has been implied that diffusion is the prime cause of condensation problems. It is probably more accurate to say that vapour diffusion by itself never initiates a problem. Air leakage is now considered to be the prime cause of most condensation problems in walls and roof spaces. If, therefore, a building can be made tight against air leakage it may not need a vapour barrier, as we know it. On the other hand, if there are openings that permit air to leak from the warm side to the cold side of the insulation, adding a vapour barrier (even of zero permeance) that does not seal off the openings will be useless.

Overall Lessons from the Conservation House Simple is better than complicated Passive is better than active - Moving parts fail Focus on envelope / conservation
