3 What is KT Tape? What is KT Tape? Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape (KT Tape) is an elastic athletic tape that can be used in standard taping techniques as well as a wide variety of Kinesiology Taping techniques including pain modification and reduction of edema. 14 White Athletic Taping What is the difference between techniques used with KT Tape and other taping options Three Primary Taping Techniques 1. Athletic Taping 2. McConnell Taping 3. Kinesiology Taping White Athletic Taping is the most commonly used taping technique in the U.S. This technique often requires a pre-tape prior to use. The techniques are used in preventative, acute and chronic injuries though are typically applied immediately prior to and removed immediately after activity. The tape can cause skin issues due to entrapment of moisture, high latex content, compression of skin and muscles due to the wrapping technique. Often used to stabilize joints/injuries during activity McConnell Taping McConnell Taping has been stated as addressing chronic musculoskeletal issues based on an understanding of the influence of posture and mechanics on activities as a causative factor for musculoskeletal symptoms. Most commonly used for patellofemoral, shoulder sublimation and plantar fasciitis. These techniques use a super rigid, highly adhesive cotton mesh tape. KT Tape TM KT Tape is a versatile, longitudinally elastic tape that can be used in the techniques / applications of both the white athletic and McConnell taping. By adjusting the stretch placed on tape it also provides additional techniques and benefit. Typically left on for a shorter period of time (<18 hours) due to it s potential for skin irritation and constricting affects. These techniques have been widely accepted by the medical community for nearly two decades Copyright of Dr. Holly Moriarty, DC 3
4 Kinesiology Taping Techniques Kinesiology Taping Techniques Kinesiology Taping Techniques have been used in Asia and Europe for nearly two decades. Gained popularity here in the U.S. in the late 1990 s. These techniques were more recently seen on the world stage and gained notoriety during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. So what is KT Tape used for?... Mechanical Assist Fascia Correction Ligament / Tendon Pressure Tissue Gathering Functional Correction Lymphatic Assist Fascia Correction Mechanical Assist Using KT tape s elastic qualities to cue or assist movement 50-75% available tension Examples: Drop foot, loss of extensor tone in hand and wrist Manually positioning fascia using KT Tape to hold in place Using the oscillating technique to produce tension on the fascia (change force vector) 25%-50% 50% available tension Example: ITB friction syndrome, lateral epicondylitis Ligament / Tendon Pressure Increased stimulation of the mechanoreceptors Improved proprioception and dynamic stability 50%-100% available tension Example: MCL sprain, Achilles tendonitis, patella tendonitis Tissue Gathering Using KT Tape over an area of pain / inflammation Gait Control Theory and tactile stimulation 25%-50% available tension Example: Lumbago, cervicalalgia Copyright of Dr. Holly Moriarty, DC 4
5 Functional Correction Lymphatic Assist Assist or limit a motion through sensory stimulation / tactile cueing Position and hold technique Analyzing and altering mechanics / movement patterns 50%-100% available tension Example: Sub-acromial impingement, rotator cuff insufficiency Theory: creates areas of decreased pressure to direct exudates to the nearest lymph collector Can reduce ecchymosis by assisting the lymphatic system Applied usually in a Fan pattern and anchor at medial side of joint (following the lymphatic structural confluence) Applied with 0% to 10% available tension, though with tolerable tension / stretch on the tissue involved 25 Example: Extremity edema, bruises 26 Online Resources KT Tape Thank you!
