2 INTRODUCTION If the Windows Operating System on your Tango Smart Console has been corrupted the following steps will help you to reload the original factory image. This procedure will help resolve issues with the Windows Operating System itself and should not be seen as a solution to simple Tango software problems or setup and configuration problems. The process involves preparing a bootable USB memory stick that can be used to boot the console and restore the disk image. This procedure will return the entire contents of your consoles disk drive to the factory default which will mean you will have to re-load the latest software and any custom layouts you have created for edit panels and the like and then follow the installation guide to reconnect you console to your DAW and any extension bays you may have. Before you commence you should note that there are 2 different operating systems in use in the Tango consoles, Windows XP Home and Windows Embedded Standard. Windows XP Home is installed on consoles 1001 to 1114 and Windows Embedded Standard is installed on 1115 onwards. You can also identify this by looking inside the console (upper RHS corner of the chassis) where you will either see a Win XP product key sticker or a Windows Embedded Standard product key sticker. You need to ensure you download the correct OS image for your console. You will need a USB keyboard and mouse attached to your console to complete this procedure. DOWNLOAD FILES The disk images are located on the dealer downloads section of the Smart AV website. The 2 files are:- RestoreImageTango_XPH.zip Windows XP Home RestoreImageTango_WES.zip Windows Embedded Standard Download the appropriate file on a studio/office PC and unzip it. PREPARE USB MEMORY STICK WARNING: This step will erase all the files on your USB stick. You will need a USB memory stick to copy the files onto. This will need to be 3GB or larger and have no important files on it as it will be erased. To prepare the USB stick, proceed as follows:- Insert the USB stick into the computer that contains the files you downloaded. Tango Restore Operating System Disk Image Page 2

3 Locate the file UFDPrep.exe (part of the zip) and from a DOS prompt run the command UFDPrep.exe d: where d: is the drive letter for your flash stick. You will need to type Y to confirm that all files on the stick will be erased. Copy the entire contents of the ZIP file to the flash stick. The root directory of the flash stick should now contain the directories Windows and BackupTango_XPH or BackupTango_WES depending on what operating system you are restoring. BOOT TO USB STICK Now insert the USB stick into a port on your console. Power on the console and it should now boot to the image on the USB stick. This will be identified by a desktop image that contains the message Smart AV Disk Image Restore Utility. If the console does not boot to this USB stick you may need to adjust the BIOS. This is done as follows:- While the console is booting, press the Delete key continuously until you see the BIOS screen. Tango Restore Operating System Disk Image Page 3

4 Use the down arrow key to select Advanced BIOS Features end hit <enter>. Use the down arrow key to select First Boot Device. Now use page up/page down to select USB-HDD for this device. Use the down arrow key to select Second Boot Device. Now use page up/page down to select HDD-0 for this device. Hit F10 to exit and then Y to save the settings. The console should now boot to the USB stick as described above. RESTORE IMAGE Now to restore the image you simply double click on the icon on the Smart AV Disk Image Restore Utility desktop. The Icon will be labelled Restore Tango Win Embedded or Restore Tango Win XP Home. Check that the icon displayed is correct for the OS required for your console. 5 Restore Tango Win Embedded = Windows Embedded Image RESTORE ICON A DOS window will open where you confirm that you definitely want to restore the image. Click Y and <enter> twice to confirm. Now the image will copy across to your consoles HDD. Note that you may get some Access Denied errors in some cases when you copy the files across. This is normal. Once you see the message Restore Complete. Hit Any Key To Continue. You can shutdown the console and remove the USB stick. Tango Restore Operating System Disk Image Page 5

6 Now when you next power on the console it will boot to the newly created disk image. The new image may prompt you to reboot again and you may also find that it takes a few minutes before the USB keyboard and mouse begin to function. ACTIVATE WINDOWS (XP HOME ONLY) If your console is running XP Home, when it boots to the new image the first time you will be faced with a message stating that Windows needs to be activated. You will need to located your consoles product key from the sticker inside or obtain the number from Smart AV technical support. It is very important to locate and enter this product ID or else you may breaching the Windows Terms Of Use. Thus could result in prosecution by Microsoft or may render your console un-useable at some point in the future. To activate your disk image, proceed as follows:- Locate the Windows product key which is on a printed label on the rear (inside) of the console. Note down this product key. Boot the console and wait until you see the Activate Windows message. Click Yes and the Activate Windows utility will open. Select the Yes I Want To Telephone A Customer Service Representative To Active Windows option and then click the Next Button. Click the Change Product Key button to enter the unique Windows product key from your console. Enter the product key that you noted above in the boxes provided on the screen and then click Update. Select your country or region from the drop down box. Now locate the phone number for Microsoft in your region. Dial this number and follow the prompts to provide the Installation ID number displayed on the screen to Microsoft. The Microsoft recorded message will return a long activation number which you will need to write down. Enter this number in the boxes provided on the screen and click the Next button. A message will now appear to indicate that the windows activation was successful. Reboot your console Tango Restore Operating System Disk Image Page 6

7 CHANGE CONSOLE NAME The computer name field in Windows is uniquely set for each console using the serial number of the console. You will need to reset this computer name for your newly created disk image or else you may have problems if you have more than one console on a network. To update the computer name:- From the Windows start menu select Start => Control Panel and then select System. Select the Computer Name tab and press the Change button to change the computers name. Change the computers name to be TangoConsolexxx where xxx are the last 3 digits of your consoles serial number (located on the rear of the console and click OK.
